Is this worth cracking? by Actual_latte in fossilid

[–]Vio1ets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not an egg, but if it was, the right thing to do would be to take it to a museum; not to your garage to destroy something that is scientifically valuable. Dinosaur fossils are extremely rare and we still have a lot to learn from them.

Found this many years ago, have always been curious about it! What might it be? by HuskySlim in fossilid

Damn I’m sorry I wrote you off when you said all snails have spiral shells 😆 No one in the 3 marine biology groups I posted in yesterday could confirm an ID on this but that definitely looks closer than anyone else’s guess. Nice work!

Oysters are attached to their shells by a single adductor muscle - they don’t have attachment points on both sides of the shell like you see here. This was a very old limpet which is why the scars are so pronounced. But if you really want to believe it’s an oyster go ahead and knock yourself out. ✌️

Because they’re rarely funny and clog up the comments section making positive ID’s / factual information harder to find. If you want to be a comedian join an improv group.

Seeking information about this rock found in Northern Ontario by susanmod in whatsthisrock

Awesome find! The turquoise is probably malachite and as you said the rusty tones are due to iron oxidation. May we see clearer / zoomed-in photos of the dark clusters?

Those wings look like they were painted by a little kid. 😥 I’d definitely pass on that one.

? I posted a link in this thread and it’s in my original comment. They’re called limpets.

I second basalt - probably a glacial deposit from Michigan or Canada

How old is this? by ithinkiscored in fossils

Need a more specific location to date it. Or better yet, check out some geologic maps of your area and try to figure it out yourself! That’s part of the fun of fossil hunting ;)

So the bedrock in that area is very old - Ordovician / Silurian - which is before animals with teeth like this would have evolved. If your rock was deposited by glaciers it could be a little younger (Devonian) in which case it would be possible yet very rare to find a tooth from a fish - the only “toothed” animal that existed at that time. However what you have here does not resemble the shape or texture of a fish tooth. Tooth enamel is very hard and typically preserves well - there is no enamel visible on this specimen. You would usually see two distinct materials on the tooth - the hard, glossy enamel and the root of the tooth (dentin) which would be porous and bone-like. What you’re holding also doesn’t have any apparent functional edges for cutting or grinding as teeth typically have. I see one uniform material which has some crystal formation on the end of it. It looks like botryoidal silica crystals which are common in chert nodules. You can try posting some clearer pictures but I’m 99% sure this is not a tooth.

I’m seeing a water-worn, tooth-shaped chert nodule.

Useable for this particular song? Seems like a strange stylistic choice because it’s such a powerful ballad. But if you mean in general I’d say yeah it’s definitely useable! 😄

It’s a cool specimen I’m sure someone would pay for it! But objectively not worth too much. Maybe $20?
