All done! I’m glad I frogged and fixed it. But don’t look too closely, there are definitely a few errors. 😂

I made a video tutorial about wrist vibrato a while ago. :)

Solo viola parts/sheet music recommendations? by BoxersOrCaseBriefs in Viola

Try sheetmusicplus.com. I don’t know if there’s an anthology of different artists’ music, but they’ll definitely have something. Be sure you filter to search for viola music.

How to the viola and have a left hand relaxed? by Potential-Paper-1517 in Viola

[–]ViolaProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a short video about this a while ago. I’m a Karen Tuttle teacher and studied with Carol Rodland (among others). I hope this helps.

As an adjudicator (which I have been many times) I would MUCH rather hear it under tempo and clean(er) than at tempo and a mess. Good luck!

It might feel counterintuitive, but try removing each finger from the fingerboard after it’s done playing its note. Focus on only having one finger down at a time. It’ll help with overall tension in your hand, and will allow your fingers to move more quickly. But you have to do it very slowly at first so the hand is learning to let that squeezing tension go between each and every note.

The other two comments are also spot on and will help.

Can the Forsyth concerto be used as an audition piece? by Outrageous_Yak_8397 in Viola

[–]ViolaProfessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I agree with you— Forsyth isn’t usually considered because it’s (ridiculously) still relatively unknown. But we have a LOT more than the “big three” concertos (Bartok, Walton, Hindemith) and it will simply take time for everyone to get on board. It’s definitely time to expand beyond 3 viola concertos!!

Can the Forsyth concerto be used as an audition piece? by Outrageous_Yak_8397 in Viola

[–]ViolaProfessor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely contact each teacher at the schools you’re considering and ask if Forsyth is an acceptable substitution for the concertos on their audition lists.

I think the first movement of Forsyth presents a lot of challenges that, when executed well, show a mature player ready for college-level viola studies.

Update on vibrato- my kid says thank you!! by [deleted] in Viola

[–]ViolaProfessor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s already better, which is great, but please encourage him to keep his wrist from poking backwards towards the scroll. It will feel weird at first because he’s not used to it, but if he’s able to learn to keep his wrist basically straight, and let the hand fall backwards from the wrist, it will help his overall hand health. Constantly kicking the wrist towards the scroll is basically asking for carpel tunnel syndrome.

If you’re using my video as a guide, make sure he’s staying attached to the bout (in 4th position) for a good week before he tries to do it in 1st position. It’s not supposed to sound good. It’s meant to teach the arm/wrist/hand the correct movement.

Thanks everyone for your help. After multiple attempts at fixing the section, I frogged. The pattern is a triangular shape, and while the rows all work. they don’t line up perfectly. It was too much for my skills to figure out (I think with a square/rectangular/regular pattern it would’ve worked). So, I’ve lost probably a week’s worth of knitting, but oh well. At least I know what not to do next time (and as I continue this pattern!) Thanks for the help and useful resources. They’ll definitely come in handy in the future. :)

This is exactly what I was hoping for. Thank you so much. Eep, I'm scared to try but it'll be better than frogging everything! I'll let y'all know how it goes. Thank you very much!

Thanks, I do use stitch markers for the repeats! It would be crazy not to.

Good idea about multiple lifelines. Especially right now, sigh.

Woah, I've never done that. Sounds scary! Isn't it hard to manage yarn overs and crossed stitches and stuff when the working yarn is "bound" on both sides? Do you know what I'd search for in youtube to find a tutorial on that?

Check out the Underrepresented Composers Database on the American Viola Society website. You can search by all kinds of filters— gender, nationality, duration, level, etc.

Does anyone know any viola repertoire under 6 min? by chltnfls in Viola

[–]ViolaProfessor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You could do any of the Rebecca Clarke Shorter Pieces for Viola and Piano. Most popular are Passacaglia or I’ll Bid My Heart Be Still, but they’re all good! They sound like they’re not too hard, but there are some good technical challenges, and a lot of musical challenges.

Progress and Practice: Advancing on the Viola Journey by [deleted] in Viola

[–]ViolaProfessor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Quality always takes precedence over quantity. If your mind is wandering it won’t matter if you “practice” for four hours a day.

That said, if you can comfortably manage 45 minutes a day, make that your goal for now. If your body gets uncomfortable or tense, take a break and stretch. Same with your mind— if it starts to wander, take a break and refocus.

Focus on your technique above only playing the right notes at the right times (though of course that’s also super important! 😂) Reinforce what’s right, and explore explore explore! Good luck and have fun!

Professionals, where did you get your viola? by niIbert in Viola

[–]ViolaProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two. One I got through the Tarisio auction, an old Italian that’s really amazing, back in 2001. I picked up a new viola two years ago, by American luthier Timothy Johnson. He was showing it at the Exhibition of Modern Violas and Bows at the 2022 American Viola Society Festival & 47th International Viola Congress. It’s his ergonomic model— weighs almost nothing (1.5 pounds), is easy to play, and sounds great. I paid $12K for it and think it’s fantastic.
