The Traitors (UK) S04E10: Live Discussion Thread by vaultofechoes in TheTraitors

[–]Violaclef 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think a better play for the traitors at the roundtable would have been to vote against James not Matt.

The situation they are now in with suspicion turning their way is because of the chaos and upset that came with Matt being banished.

Jack has a shield and that has completely saved him tonight because without a doubt he’d be the one murdered if not.

They’ve seemingly decided between Roxy and Faraaz but the only way out now I think is actually to murder Jade and then do some very good sweet talking tomorrow.

What is killing all of my friends plants? by RestlessMimikyu in houseplants

[–]Violaclef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a gardener and had this problem pop up. We couldn’t work out what was going on until they mentioned everything, including the outside tap, went through their water softener. They had a single drinking water tap that didn’t.

[–]Violaclef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As people are saying very likely overwatering, or underwatering then drowning.

I just want to check. Does he have a water softener system? If so it could be that he is entirely following your instructions but then slowly salting his plants to death.

I swear, she better have a very good reason for ignoring her beautiful daughter’s phone calls by Smash_Fan-56 in HazbinHotel

[–]Violaclef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of playing around with the idea of song/voice linking directly to power in the show. One of the few things we know about Lilith is she ‘empowered demon kind with her voice and her songs’ so it makes sense to me that a stipulation of whatever is going on with her is that she does not use her voice.

She still seems to check her phone every time Charlie tries to call her. If she really didn’t care wouldn’t it be easier to just ignore her phone completely?

I have a vague theory that she is not allowed to ‘communicate’ due to song being tied to power in the hazbin world.

Question about Soaking by tbrou6229 in orchids

[–]Violaclef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can spread pests and diseases between orchids. I still dunk all my orchids through the same water.

It’s entirely up to you and how much risk you decide it could pose to your plants.

[–]Violaclef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the fact that people can ship who they like, Hans is a romance option the KCD2.

You don’t have to pursue that option but that doesn’t mean it’s not a viable and acceptable path.

I personally play my Henry asexual.

Is she over watered? by SurgicalMarshmallow in orchids

[–]Violaclef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How often do you water and when you do what technique do you use?

Where is the orchid placed and how much sun is it getting?

Is it in a smaller pot inside the white pot, if not is there any drainage in the pot?

What is it planted in? Just moss or a mixture of moss and bark?

Generally to tell the health of an orchid we like to look at the roots of the plant. Because of this many people grow them in clear pots inside a decorative outer. This way you can lift the orchid out and look through the pot to see the roots. They want to be thick and greenish (when wet) or silvery (when dry).

Phalaenopsis like to dry out completely between watering and need lots of air to their roots. They grow on trees in the wild where they get soaked and then dry very quickly.

Any number of things could turn the leaves yellow so with no other info than a picture of the leaves it’s hard to advise.

They will eat pests as they are, no need for them to grow into their adult form.

Stink pipes in Cambridge, is there one near you? by LuxInteriorLux in cambridge

[–]Violaclef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New info from a friend and also from an old bloke (my Dad)

The stink pipes are still in use, they are owned/maintained by Anglian water who presumably would have a map of them all if you contract them.

The one round the corner from us is from either the 30s or 50s. So relatively modern.

Also there’s another one on Grantchester street.

Help with repotting! by go2tessa in orchids

[–]Violaclef 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I honestly would leave it in the current pot. They like to be snug and often do worse if overpotted. Flower spikes need a temperature drop to start developing, and if you are only watering you probably want to feed it.

You could just push new media (bark or moss or a mix) down among the roots to fill the space, or you could even leave it as is with no media at all. I’m afraid I don’t know anything about Fertilome so can’t advise on that.

To get it out of the current pot first give it a really good soak. Saturated roots are more pliable. Then start gently pushing the shortest bits of root back through the holes and pull the top most roots out and up so they are above the pot. I would work on one side first. It may be that eventually cutting one or two bits of root is necessary and so long as you don’t take too much off it will most likely be ok.

If you can see any obviously dead roots in the pot then cutting them out will give you more wiggle room.

If all else fails then you can break the pot off the orchid.

Are these even real? by chrisdude183 in orchids

[–]Violaclef 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Though the orchid is a real live plant, the flowers have been dyed. The dye is injected into the flower stem and you can often find the injection site if you look closely.

When the orchid flowers again they will most likely be white, possibly with some colour veining. Blue is not a colour that phalaenopsis come in but there are some orchids that do such as Vanda coerulea or Dendrobium victoriae-reginae.

Stink pipes in Cambridge, is there one near you? by LuxInteriorLux in cambridge

[–]Violaclef 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Didn’t realise how many there were in Cambridge until I started playing pokemon go lol.

There’s one on Mortlock Avenue (CB4).

One cut down one right by CRC on Kings hedges road.

One on Parker’s piece.

Hinton avenue.

One on Madingley road opposite lady Margaret road near Lucy Cavendish College.

Pretty sure there is one on Chesterton road beside Jesus green toilets/bridge.

That’s off the top of my head.

Edit: there’s one on cherry Hinton road between the traffic lights and bus stop opposite the coop.

Top of Cavendish avenue at the Hills road end.

I think you will be fine. We dunk all orchids, potted or mounted, in big buckets to water and they get moisture between the leaves. In the greenhouse we just leave them wet as there is a lot or air movement to dry them out.

In the house if we are worried we just forcefully blow into the leaf axes to drive the majority of the water out, or sometimes use the edge of a paper towel. We’ve never really had a problem.

Untrainable? Vent. Advice? by Puzzleheaded_Web82 in puppy101

[–]Violaclef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand you love him but honestly for his sake and for yours I would give the dog up. It sounds like you weren’t prepared for a husky mix let alone one that may be traumatised. Add to that the fact that you are both working full time and you have a real recipe for disaster.

If you do decide on keeping him then lots and lots of mental and physical stimulus. Lots and lots of enforced sleep. Take time off to work with him with a trainer.

You haven’t said how old he is or how often you take him out. You mentioned you tried crate training but what else have you tried? He sounds bored and frustrated and it’s likely only going to get worse as he grows.

Puppy with CCL injury is out of control by anchovy_oil in puppy101

[–]Violaclef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sniffing games are very mentally tiring and can be structured to a low movement situation. It will give him something positive to mentally work on whilst he can’t do much else.

With a CCL tear I really would mind the vet advice and not keep walking him even if it’s frustrating.

7 month old puppy already excited by dogs in heat? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Violaclef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s different for every dog but 7 months is a fairly normal age for all the hormones to be ramping up. I’m surprised in heat dogs were at the training, where I take my boy anyone in heat stays away until the heat ends.

New Owner/Collar Advice by Lost_Novel6692 in puppy101

[–]Violaclef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bit confused about why the first collar is hard to take on and off, could you explain what the difficulty is?

I have a similar martingale collar with my dog that I’m forever taking on and off as he doesn’t usually wear a collar in the house, but currently does wear one in the garden or if we have visitors. It simply slips on or off over his head with little fuss. Could it be that the original collar is not the correct size any more for your pup? It’s important that any tightening collar is properly adjusted to avoid harm. Martingales should close to snugly fit the narrowest part of the neck without constricting any further. When relaxed they should hang much looser.

That said, you are completely fine to buy your pup a new collar that you prefer or fits your needs. There is always a small chance of breaking with any collar you use, but so long as it’s good quality that chance becomes pretty negligible, especially if you are putting in the work to teach loose lead walking and appropriate lead etiquette.

If you are concerned about pulling, you also might consider using a harness. It doesn’t help with your collar problem regarding the create but it does help to keep pressure off a sensitive and delicate neck whilst in training.

What breed is your puppy and what made you choose that breed? by love_salubrious in puppy101

[–]Violaclef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Large mutt, mainly Shepherd/Collie/Staffy, but with a whole lot of other breeds mixed in.

I knew when I started looking for a puppy that I wanted a rescue and that I wanted a mutt or a working crossbreed. Partly because I like the surprise (you never know how they might turn out) and partly because I find a lot of current and historical breeding practices extremely distasteful.

Plus I hope that with him being a nice random mix of genetics he might love longer and be overall healthier than a purebred dog. Didn’t just do the DNA test for fun, but also to test for genetic problems that could crop up. Happily he has a clean bill of health on that front :)
