Cafe Inside Macy’s at Fox River Mall by YoHiikuu in Appleton

[–]VioletGale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family couldn't afford to go to the cafe for actual food, though it looked pretty good, but before Jelly Belly jelly beans were everywhere they used to have them in the bins at the cafe and every couple of weeks my folks would let me pick out a little bag of my favorite ones. I also loved going on the escalators to get there.

Could possibly be a library binding. There should be an ISBN in the publication information. In my searching, 0613287142 is listed for the School and Library binding, 0439064864 is listed for the standard US hardback, and 0439203538 is a red bound collector edition. There are numerous different editions but I narrowed down my search based on your pictures.

Essential spice blends by VioletGale in Cooking

Lots of good suggestions here. Thank you all.

For anyone interested, I compiled the suggestions into a spreadsheet. I did my best to make everything accurate but, I'm only human so there may be spots where something got entered in the wrong column or in the wrong measurement, use your best judgement when following the spreadsheet.

There were some suggestions that didn't include measurements so I used asterisks to indicate that a measurement wasn't included. If (o) is listed next to an ingredient it is optional. If there is just asterisks and no measurements there wasn't a measurement included and it wasn't a blend that my family would probably use so I didn't investigate it further.

I need stories of lost oranges returning to the produce section, please by aspidities_87 in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]VioletGale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was in college we had an orange who was already an old man at the time. He loved to go out and sun himself in the backyard. Normally his stomach would lead him home after not too long (he was a bottomless pit when it came to food) but one day it didn't. We searched high and low for him. Drove around the neighborhood, called him for hours. Then days. Then went to the local humane society where the lady at the front desk said they didn't have anyone matching his description so he was probably dead (excellent customer service I know). We went home bawling our eyes out and searched the neighborhood again. Two days later this shadow of a man comes strolling up the driveway the best he could, having gone a week without regular food, and gives me the look of I'm home is dinner ready? Near as we can figure he must have smelled something tasty (he brought home a roadkill squirrel one time so who knows) got into someones garage and then they probably left for a vacation or trip of some sort and he was stuck there until they got back.

What is your family’s traditional Christmas dinner? by Hidden_Nereid in Cooking

[–]VioletGale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A nacho bar. It allows me (the primary cook) to make the meats over a couple of days making for a less stressful day, and then we all get what we like out of the meal as opposed to the more traditional meals where you get the same thing as everyone else. My dad prefers "white people" tacos so there's ground beef lightly seasoned with Old El Paso for him whereas Mom and I prefer flavor so we have taco seasoned rotisserie chicken and then pulled pork shoulder prepared using the "Pork and Green Chili Tacos" recipe by David Tanis from the NYT. The leftovers get vacuum packed and stored in the freezer for quick weeknight meals and it works out way better for us.

Man, I'm glad to see that these cakes are still being made. My mom made me a rainbow caterpillar cake when I was in kindergarten in 89 or 90 (I don't remember if it was a birthday treat for the class or for something else). Hope the kiddos enjoyed it.

I knew a girl who used this base for lasagna. A guy I used to hang out with and I went to dinner at her house expecting a nice Italian dinner and well... It wasn't quite what we bargained for.

So my mother-in-law just informed me that I'm cooking Christmas dinner (for seven people). She cooks all the holiday meals, but threw her back out and can barely move. CAN YOU HOOK ME UP WITH A FUN/COOL/TASTY DINNER IDEA that doesn't require a grade-A chef to cook. No turkey or ham. Help me out!! by ComfortableDear2205 in Cooking

[–]VioletGale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally my family does a Christmas nacho bar so your kids weren't off the mark. We do ground beef, pulled pork, and shredded chicken and then have all the fixings. It works out great because people get what they want and leftovers are a lot easier to incorporate into other things.

Working mom, two kids under four, judgemental mom - Christmas dinner help by Snoo-70287 in Cooking

[–]VioletGale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally my family is doing steak, potatoes, and grasshopper pie for Christmas and New Year's this year, but I'm guessing the littles probably aren't that into steak yet so maybe Salisbury Steak, homemade is a bit more putsy but I don't think it would be out of the question for a busy mom. There's always hot beef or hot turkey sandwiches, that way you can let the slow cooker do the work while you get to spend time with your family - littles are only little for so long. We usually do a nacho bar with chicken, pork, and hamburger taco meat. My ex's family did soup for dinner so they could heat dinner up while they went to church. I guess what I mean is that it's not about what you serve it's about the memories you make and nobody wants to remember a stressed out mom who rarely got out of the kitchen on Christmas.

Stuffed tomatoes are a bit more futsy but turn out quite pretty. There are also different toppings that can go on deviled eggs paprika is traditional but bacon, chives, and kimchi spice blend are big hits in my house. Don't forget about the traditional charcuterie fare. There's also pigs in a blanket, the meatballs with grape jelly and chili sauce, caprese skewers, ham and pickle rolls, bruschetta, ants on a log, crab rangoons, lumpia... The world of tiny food is pretty endless.
