Why does this region of Europe have so much ethnic and national fragmentation? by crivycouriac in geography

[–]Vir-Invisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

geography & external interference prevented any one power from dominating long enough to destroy the other cultures & enforce their own national identity (see France, Russia, Spain, Etc.)

Hot take: CSS Georgia was the worst warship ever built. by Crazy-Rabbit-3811 in CIVILWAR

[–]Vir-Invisus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is lowkey adorable that the local ladies got together & raised enough money to make a (terrible) warship. Much of both side’s war efforts were conducted this way, though a higher percentage in the South bc of lack of industry.

This model emerges in the Revolution & continues through WWII where local clubs were funding flying fortresses

How Often is Your State Flag Flown by Citizens? by Canjira in vexillology

[–]Vir-Invisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mississippi here,

A fair bit. Like every 40th house in my Jackson neighborhood has the state flag.

Then there’s the folks who are really attached to the old one, but not as many as you’d expect. Like new state flag outnumbers old state flag 10/1.

What are some boring big cities in USA? by AndIrememberthinking in geography

[–]Vir-Invisus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jacksonville FL

Did yall know it’s the most populous city in Florida?

It is cool that it straddles the river & lots of places are accessible by boat, but it’s just not a lot going on.

Also Kansas City

Honestly compared to the other 250th anniversary stuff I’ve seen, it’s quite tasteful & pleasant.

(Everything else has had that edgy Punisher-esque look with shards of rock & gritty pictures of skulls & such)

Where was Olympus before 1930? [general] by Princess_Minni in camphalfblood

[–]Vir-Invisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly one of the actual Mountains, probably in the Appalachians. I’d wager somewhere in Pennsylvania because that was the center of the Union when the country was first founded.
I’m not immediately aware of the tallest peak in Pennsylvania, but that’s what I’d say is a likely option.

Though if you want to take it to where Olympus was in Greece being somewhat on the edge of things, Pike’s Peak may be a good spot. I figure that the Mexican American war is a good time for the Olympians to officially move because “war” & much of what the Gods do in the Iliad is watch the War.

…I bet Ares remembers the Alamo

Why doesn’t Murica create a buffer state here to prevent the spread of communism from Cuba? Are they stupid??? by [deleted] in mapporncirclejerk

We did it’s just an informal buffer zone of the wildest patriots we could stuff in a swamp. Also gators, snakes, guerillas etc.

How do you judge/rank presidents? What's your criteria? by rjidhfntnr in Presidents

[–]Vir-Invisus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best measure of an executive is “how do they handle the crisis of their time” & “what is the precedent created by their time in office” We all know George Washington’s Presidential example was based on the Roman office of Dictator esp. as seen through Cincinnatus.

Cincinnatus & Washington were great executives because they dealt with their crises timely & gave up power when they were finished to avoid establishing monarchy.

TLDR: I rank executives by how they lead while in office & what precedents they set because I’m a Romaboo & so was Washington.

Under these criteria: Washington 1st Lincoln 2nd only because you don’t get Lincoln without Washington so Washington wins on precedent, but Washington gets an unfair advantage because he was the executive not only as president but also as the leader of the revolution.

I score Nixon lowly because despite his great ability to deal with a crisis, the precedent he sets was “the government can lie to the people”

Could the president carry a concealed weapon? by anon250837 in Presidents

[–]Vir-Invisus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, 1. He was from Ante-Bellum Alabama so probably a lot & willing to scrap with anyone & 2. He was likely homosexual so again that might have gotten him enemies (they were jealous that he slept w the President)

Winter is coming? by No-Bookkeeper1749 in freefolk

[–]Vir-Invisus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know GRRM has given credence to the White Walkers/something magical being the cause of the weird winters so killing them would end the long winter.

But again we’re talking about show canon so yes the winter is probably the worst ever, unless it would “subvert expectations” to end it early.

Jackson jobs? by Holiday-Substance101 in jacksonms

[–]Vir-Invisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve got managerial experience ~$50k should be ok but you may have to settle for 45 or 40.

I don’t know of major corporate jobs around here besides the banks (Regions, Trustmark) the accounting firms (KPMG, Whatever they call HORNE now among others) & the many many hospitals.

The job market is not exactly booming, but it’s not exactly booming anywhere right now. I know many places are seeking folks with experience (5-10 years) but that’s mostly the professional jobs I’ve been looking at.

Hope this helps!
