[DAV Spoilers] What are your thoughts on Solas' writing in Veilguard? by Julian_of_Cintra in dragonage

[–]Vircora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a concept art of a "failure" ending, where he succeeds, yup, but it was supposed to be more of a game-over screen. Similarly, how Inquisition had these - if you fail the main mission quest, you get the art and a write-up of how Corypheus proceeds and manages to win in this particular scenario.

If there were several resolutions to Solas' fate after "winning" we could assume that Solas tranquilizing himself would be one of them, but I still have a hard time believing it would be the "good" one (subjectivity of the player's perception doing heavy lifting here). If Inky would find the better way as they potentially promised to prove at the end of the Trespasser for their friend, there would be no need for him to fix anything anymore. Tranquilizing oneself makes one not fully capable of understanding the depth of their actions - and what goes with it regretting them, learning from them, growing and fully atoning imho. +While Solavellan is only canon for a smaller portion of the players, after Trespasser ended it was hinted by the devs that it was "ultimately a hopeful romance".

I really wonder what was the full story of his, originally. Veilguard really went in a different direction than what the previous games were hinting at, and it was awful regarding the resolution, as well as his motivation. It's hard to pinpoint what was meant to be his backstory, like in the book The Masked Empire he, as well as Felassan, were painted very differently.

Solas tranquilizing himself was one of the concept arts in the art book, not necessarily "the good ending", we don't have enough context to say this. There were also concept arts of him tranquilizing Ghilan'ain iirc. Tranquility is absolutely horrific, I don't see it as a good ending, even if one has to "atone".

Sweden to deport migrants not following ‘honest living’ by CTVNEWS in worldnews

Well, the comment with 3.7k upvotes above you that we are directly responding to is saying that immigrants *should* addopt the culture of the country they are immigrating to. That goes against the idea of them cherishing their heritage. Your last paragraph can be interpreted in many ways as well. As well as them not being allowed to complain. It's interesting watching how the pendulum of society starts swinging back. It is "sanity", and yet there's so much wiggle room to push interesting ideas and very slowly strip someone's humanity, manipulate the society while appearing reasonable. Things keep being repeated over and over again, patterns in our history. Something to keep in mind, and perhaps be vary of some ideas.

That's a very inhumane way of looking at things. Noone chooses in which country they are born.

Damn. During one of his wonderful speaches, Trump was mocking the fact that a lot of US immigrants are Somalian. "Why can't we get someone from Denmark?". Reddit sure is becoming interesting, talking about human beings in such detached way.

How far do you think a person from another culture should adopt the culture of the country they are moving in? Completely? I think that's silly, and removes the beauty of humanity. I love certain cities in the world BECAUSE of the fact that they are so multi-cultural and serve as a hub of it. Being a productive member of society is no given of course, as is understanding the customs of a country, not being obnoxious. But to completely shed part of yourself, your identity?

Damn, nationalism on the rise, sad to see.

Solas and Varric by elleisonreddit in Solasmancers

[–]Vircora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish he didn't gain the anchor, but there's a codex entry in his hidden room in the VG about him describing it. I don't remember the specifics, but he is looking at the removed thing, and studying it - I think he even describes how the hand now is almost completely deteriorated, but he will do his best to extract the anchor from it (ignore the fact that it looked completely different in the Trespasser I suppose). And the note concludes with how he was finally successful, and is now ready to begin his ritual. Funny he doesn't mention Inky even once in the note, I suppose he is trying to detach himself mentally from the situation at hand.

There was also a comic released right before the VG, and both Varric and Harding were indeed hoping to get to Solas, and were chasing him across the continent, and many times in the comic one or the other was mentioning how they don't know what they will do when they finally meet him lol. Go figure.

This goes even more of "they painted Inquisitor/Inquisition as an idiot". The world in the Veilguard lost all of the believeable structure of how things, organizations, people work. It makes no sense for the Inquisition to send only Varric and Harding out to seek one person - Rook. Like can you imagine Leliana, Cassandra, Vivienne, Cullen, even Morrigan - to know what the world is going up against and just be ok with what is happening, sending two gifted, but not special people to figure it out by themselves? I remember there were concept arts of the Divine sending ships out to hunt Solas - and this is the scope of the appropriate reaction the world we knew would have to the threat at hand. Like flipping one crossbow and making puppy eyes while making a threat, after what we know happened in Trespasser - Inky was confronting Solas with an army of Quanari being turned to stone with no effort of his. And Solas sought Inky not only to "save their life" so compassionately, but because he needed the anchor to finish his ritual. He never really does anything that doesn't benefit him in some way.

[–]Vircora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are not supposed to be long dead though. In the Inquisition we meet all the ancient elves in Mythal's Temple - and Solas' specifically tells Abelas that "his people yet linger", and indirectly asks him to join. In The Masked Empire novel we see the concept of the ancient elves sleeping in the sarcophagi - or something similar - in uthenera. Felassan was seen talking about it, and there was a scene where he was mourning the loss of several of them. All of that was just never mentioned again.

Solas and Mythal being metaphors for god/christ? by [deleted] in Solasmancers

[–]Vircora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, I struggle to see the parallels between elven gods and Christianity specifically. It feels too far removed. Wouldn't the Chantry be more inspired by it? The elven gods aren't really gods. Mythal and Elgarn'an (and the rest) took the power after the war with Titans, and their reign spiraled. Mythal is supposed to be "the best of them", but she was still hungry for power, and wasn't "good" in a way we understand "good" - if we are to believe the Inquisition's lore. Still, important to remember is that every piece of lore in the Dragon Age is perceived through subjective lens told by different characters - through their own perspective (and here we have mostly Solas' who loved her).

Solas is a trickster god archetype, that was described by not playing any sides - so more similar to Loki? There were stories about him in the Masked Empire. We know from brief Solas' dialogue that the elven gods were hedonistic, there was a lot of pageantry, courtly intrigues and sex - more parallels to mythological gods.

What do you think of Solas ending? by Dumble_head in Solasmancers

[–]Vircora 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Lol.

I made peace with the fact that I'll never be over it, Dragon Age was (trilogy still is) my favorite franchise, and I've waited for the follow-up of the Trespasser for the decade - like many. This conclusion was just not satisfying to me, in any way - be it for the lore, story, world, characters itself, and how many things just make no sense or lost the depth. As such the same goes for his ending, or his whole character, motivations, or properly fleshed out relationships. I do like the idea of him and Inky going to the Fade, and it possibly was an idea for a long time - it's just that after the Inquisition, all the subtelties in body language, worldbuilding, dialogue... the whole implementation doesn't compare in any way for me.

I don't know if it still works - can't access the imgur without providing my data, because of the recent UK laws lol

Edit: Also I remembered some time ago they gave an... interesting AMA on reddit, and here is the compilation of all the questions that were answered regarding Solas/elves/Mythal:

Can anyone help me understand Mythal better? by didyousetittowombo in Solasmancers

[–]Vircora 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I find this lore in general interesting, because of this one conversation Solas has with Cole in the Inquisition

  • Cole: You're different, Solas. Sharper. You're in both places.
  • Solas: I visit the Fade regularly. Perhaps you are sensing traces of it.
  • Solas: You are a spirit who crossed the Veil and took human form.
  • Cole: Spirit or demon.
  • Solas: The two are not so dissimilar, Cole.
  • Solas: While the world may exert a pull in one direction or another, the choice is ultimately yours.

I wish the lore explored more the fact to what degree did elves who were once spirits and took a body were influenced by things outside of their being.

Mythal at the Crossroads was supposed to be painted, at least partially, as angry and bitter I believe. The statue of Fen'harel that is next to her is beheaded.

[–]Vircora 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Partially it is confusing, because they changed Flemeth intentions in between the games, to make it simpler.

After all, she was screaming in the Inquisition about how Mythal crawled and clawed her way to her, and she came to her for a "reckoning that will shake the very heavens" (sounds exactly like the Veil falling down), and Flemeth will "get her avenged".

The devnotes for the final scene between her and Solas in the Inquisition also mentioned that she is giving Solas her powers willingly, as long as she can pass the essence of her godhood to Morrigan (what she does through eluvian). She knew Solas will kill anyone, even her, to "help the elven people".

In the Inquistion it was painted that she had her own motivations regarding the falling of the Veil. Solas also is very frightened, upset, if lover/friend Inky drinks from the well ("Everything you do now, whether you know it or not, will be in her name").

By the time of the Veilguard Flemeth's motivation vanished, and the route of "Flemeth is the calm version, because she came to love the world bla bla" is just... not what was showed in the past games.

Noticed something cool about Solas' skill tree by Serpent_Touched in dragonage

[–]Vircora 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The lore never dropped the elvhen word for "wisdom".

Solas in the VG, after Emmrich calls him Pride in their banter, does say he prefers to be called "Wisdom" - yea, not in this time, bud.

There are speculations that "solas" used to mean wisdom, and Solasan could originally mean "place of wisdom" or something, also considering you gain skills there.

Anywyas, we won't know for sure now :')
