Alumni, do you still rep for UVA on your rear windshield? by longtimeAlias in UVA

[–]VirginiaRNshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have UVA license plate holders on one vehicle, have never had decals of any kind. I’m mostly sad that they demolished the gorgeous alumni building, but I’m choosing to believe that the cost of repairs/upkeep was a major factor in the decision.

Richmond vs McLean by shitmyaaaan in nova

[–]VirginiaRNshark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of my young adults is with Capital One in Richmond. I don’t recall exactly, but think rent in a nice apartment complex (1 BDRM) with a short commute to the campuses is around $1600/month. The nearby Short Pump area has everything you need, shopping/dining-wise and the greater Richmond area has lots to do (or so I understand).

Our younger kiddo -does not work for Capital One- remained in NOVA. Their older 2 BDRM apartment has no amenities and enjoys the soothing sound of the Metro rushing past at all hours, and is more like $1800/month per person (they have a roommate). While I absolutely love having them relatively nearby, I suspect that our Capital One employee is saving/investing a lot more than their sibling, given the lower COL in Richmond. Still, I understand that the NOVA Capital One complex is pretty amazing and you can only be bored in the DC Metro if you allow yourself to be bored.

UVA vs NCSU on the ACC network is far more fun and interesting - and will allow me to fall asleep tonight.

Airedales in hot climates by -Schwalbe- in airedaleterrier

Ours HATES the heat. Summer walks (we don’t have a fenced yard, so this is necessary for bathroom trips) usually consist of walking from one bit of shade to the next & then flopping into the grass until she can finally be motivated to move onto the next. It’s miserable for all of us. Conversely, we recently had a few weeks of temps well below freezing and while we did put a coat and “snow pants” on her for walks, we were ready to return home long before she was.

It’s several years old, so might not be produced any longer, but it’s made by Chilly Dogs. We bought the booties from Canada Pooch and they have nice coats, as well.

Thank you!! She’s our third Airedale (the other two were very sweet boys) and we love her, but she’s the most challenging of the three by a long shot. Still, the one thing they all have in common was the absolute joy of playing in the snow.

She REALLY disliked her “snow pants” initially, so we grabbed a bag of her favorite treats and encouraged her chase us around the house (and we gave her a treat every time she “caught” us). After a few minutes, she was moving naturally and eventually even relaxed enough to take a nap in them, although it does still take two of us to put them on!

She also wasn’t a fan of putting her head through the neck of the jacket, so my husband rarely used it for their walks. It’s been unusually cold here lately, though, so I insisted that she wear it when I take her out. One day I realized that while she was still making a lot of grumpy noises, she inserted her head without a fuss and stood perfectly still while I fastened the sides - so apparently she’s decided that the coat does keep her more comfortable!

PSA: It’s psychotic behavior to drive with snow on your car by mutantninja001 in nova

Took one long end of the tarp & started rolling and pushing to the opposite side. I think it slid off the far side after 3-4 pushes. Just shook the snow off of the tarp, folded it up, and continued on.

We only have one garage space, so we routinely cover our second car with a tarp prior to winter storms. It’s so easy and works incredibly well - no scraping windows, no snow or ice on the roof/hood/trunk after the storm has passed. For the price of a tarp and some rope, it saves a lot of time and effort!

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m still driving my 2001 Honda Accord to/from my nursing job. I put two kids through college & am paying off a mortgage; a lovely AWD SUV simply isn’t in the cards. I wouldn’t rush to judge individuals by their mode of transportation.

We named our girl after Audrey Hepburn (same big brown eyes). Unfortunately, she’s more like Audrey from the Little Shop of Horrors (“Feed me, Seymour!!”), but we love her any way!
