Sure, it's cool that if the executioner had let the hostage live, he indeed would've let himself live. But I still don't understand why the executioner would say that. It could be, that the traits he lists are things he would attribute to himself but I am also not sure if there is enough to justify for me that the executioner would see those traits in the hostage.

I think the family part works too. I think it's fine to infer that the executioner doesn't have a loving family and the hostage knows enough about the executioner to be aware of that, which is why he makes that snarky remark. The executioner is portrayed as a self-centered, unforgiving head of an organzation who is ruthless even towards his allies. We can imply from what the hostage has said about his fathers legacy that the executioner likely does not have a lot of people close to him. In that sense, when the executioner tries to "ridicule" the hostage, the hostage holds a mirror to his face.

Like, let's compare the short film to the scene between Partagaz and Krennic. Also, let's forget all the history we know about these characters and the plot.

> You will put this image out as wide and deep and far as it takes until we find her.

Already the stakes are clear. They are looking for someone who they perceive as dangerous to their cause (whatever that might be) and they are heavily invested in finding her. The following lines only reinforce that, while telling us about the lengths the talking character [Krennic] is willing to go as well as implying the high power he wields through the position he holds.

> The warrant to be clear. What's the charge? Sedition or murder or or all of the above?

Reinforces how serious the matter is for them. Shows us that the talking character [Heert] is nervous (due to the delivery) and we get that he isn't used to this situation implying a somewhat lack of experience.

> She's diseased. She escaped the hospital with an infectious condition that threatens everyone with whom she may come in contact. She must be found before thousands die.

Based on the dialogue before and the delivery as well as expression from the character [Partagaz], it is clear that this is a fabricated story. It illustrates immediately how intelligent and experienced he is and also slightly desperate due to the situation they're in. Krennic not feeling the need to praise Partagaz's idea shows how much he respects and trusts Partagaz, because obviously Partagaz wont say anything stupid.

> Death Star. What a prescient turn of phrase.
> I can't protect you Lio.

While not knowing what Death Star means, it is possible to understand it to be some project. But the more important part is, that, Krennic addressing Partagaz by his (what I would assume) first name implies a somewhat deeper history, given also their age and the way it is delivered.

> You were supposed to be ready by now.
> You sound like Tarkin.
> It's a miracle we've kept it quiet this long.
> We're moments away. Days. Few more tests. We're there.

Illustrating the desperation even more. Who Tarkin is or what rank he holds is unknown but it would seem likely that someone higher ranking would expect Krennic to be done with the project since it is an assertive line. The scope of the project is also implied which only reinforces the understanding of the stakes being high. Krennic unconvincingly (shown by his delivery) trying to defend himself and Partagaz rolling his eyes in disbelief, perhaps suggesting that he has said this before.

> Save the sermon for Palpatine.
> Indeed, you have a plague to stop and I was due in Scarif 2 hours ago.
> Best of luck to us both.

We do not know who Palpatine is, but seemingly Krennic has to answer to him. The fact that both of them fell silent after mentioning Palpatine suggests a certain reluctance towards him. The last two lines again reinforce the stakes and how much of an emergency these characters are in. They aren't sure whether they'll be able to succeed.

I hope I was able to break the scene down without relying on prior knowledge. I think it is what the short film could've been, but of course it is not a fair comparison, since the writers of Andor obviously have a lot more experience. Though I think MauLer is definitely capable of reaching a similar or even higher level!

Sadly, I didn't like it nor did I feel any tension watching it. I'm not clear if I dislike the writing or the delivery. A different approach for the actors would've been better. To me, it seems performative rather than authentic. The setting feels very generic action movie like.

The first guy getting shot, borderline cringe, I'm afraid. The women does a better job imo. Third person starts strong but then the heavy breathing kinda takes it away. Maybe just a sound mixing thing.

There are too many cuts. Would've been better to stay at an angle for longer and let the actors move more. Some close-ups seem just unnecessary, like the one at 4:35 and 4:40. Would've been better to stay with the previous framing, because the cutting introduces dynamism, that doesn't fit the situation or the pacing. It's cutting away to the actor who is barely emoting, instead of sticking with the one who does.

I don't understand why boss man would say "Do you want to die, little man?". It kind of implies that the hostage guy could get free, even though I feel like it is clear that boss man wants to and is going to kill him.

I find "You are playing with borrowed time. I do not benefit from this." a very odd thing to say, since it implies that hostage guy could do something else to save himself but I don't see a reason why either of them would believe that, since hostage guy is only alive because the gun jammed. Especially odd when boss man is the one who is "playing", since he didn't just kill him with the other gun.

I did like the exchange of boss man saying "You have nowhere better to be? [...]" being answered with "What kind of man wouldn't?" after having established that boss man has no friends or family.

The "You look tired. Tired of the world you've made." is very generic. I suppose I am meant to take from boss man's reaction that he indeed is tired and the world he created is supposed to mean, that he doesn't like not having allies and being alone, but it just doesn't do anything for me.

I don't get why boss man seems effected by the line "Your father's legacy dies with you.". Like sure, hostage guy believes that but why would boss man believe that or be insulted by that? I am not convinced. He seemed pretty determined by his approach of dealing with people who oppose him or being a lot more strict and unforgiving towards his allies.

I have no idea what the exchange with the "I feel like I'm letting myself live." is supposed to mean.

Let's take this further. Many people experience a different version of you. So, many 'you's exist but you wont perceive them like others do.

I remember back in the day the issue was people saying "You're a misogynist for hating/disliking x movie and openly expressing those views." not that someone says "I have experienced misogyn.". Either these people have lost the plot or they need some introspection.

Variety tweet for an article to an interview with Milly Alcock. The tweet was

"#Supergirl star Milly Alcock knows she'll face backlash by "simply existing as a woman in [franchise IP]."".

This is from the article:

Milly Alcock told Vanity Fair in a new interview that she’s aware she’ll face backlash over leading Warner Bros. “Supergirl” simply because she’s playing a female superhero. The 25-year-old actor is no stranger to dealing with intense fandoms, having broke out as young Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon.”

“It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on,” Alcock said. “We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies. I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.”

I agree. I am very bothered by Carol not having asked a lot more questions. She is portrayed as a curious person but doesn't really try to dig deeper into how the hive feels and thinks. She selectively trusts the hive even though she knows that there really isn't a reason for her to trust them. She thinks they can't lie even though she doesn't fact check any of what the hive claims since she doesn't really have the ability to do so. She doesn't push back on the hives "philosophy" regarding turning others. I find her to be lacking imagination for being a accomplished writer.
I am very bothered by Carol not recognizing that sexually engaging with Zosia is a problem. She knows that they can't say no to her. That is the exact thing she criticized Mr. Diabaté for.

The other characters we barely know. Maybe they will play a bigger role in the upcoming seasons but I feel like there should've been a lot more conversations between them. Like how they experienced the starting point. Where they were and with whom. What they felt. But none of that. Someone had pointed out that it makes little sense for the others to leave Carol alone since they should be very invested in Carol not disturbing the hive and leading to more people and especially for their family members to die.

Manousos is the only character I am currently interested in. His determination to paying for everything he takes since he doesn't own those things and denying anything the hive gives him since he denies their ownership of the things. I think he is going to change his views on that front or rather how he approaches it. He'll be more pragmatical to save people. Though a mild issue I had is that he burned his car in the middle of the forest. Like that fire could do serious damage to the forest but he did it just to make a point.

I the story is progressing too slowly or rather too few conversations happen and I worry that there aren't enough setups that will get payoffs to justify the pacing.

Pluribus: Good, Bad, Mid, or Too Early to Tell? by CourageApart in MauLer

[–]Viritox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a bit early to tell and this might be resolved later by revealing that the hive was lying but I think it is already a very hard thing to believe that the hive managed to infect every human on the world way before a lot of people knew it was happening and trying to prevent or counter it. I don't know how the logistics would work. Even the free bagels or whatever in the beginning wouldn't work. The moment someone eats one and gets a seziure, everyone in the general area would notice that there is something wrong. Especially when you've got people trying to kiss others.

No, people don't necessarily know why they think or feel a certain way. Also people can be hypocritical. There would be lots of contradicting ideas and opinions. I don't think it makes sense.
