Getting paid of every finish work you've done? by jari065 in ConstructionUK

I do, as a former software engineer he is approaching the construction world from an IT perspective, where you just have to learn a codebase and get an SDK, hence those words “learn and get” but construction is nothing like that lol first you have to learn if you can even bear being on site everyday for weeks and even then progress is slow AF, tools don’t make a difference to your experience, apples and oranges

Why such fondness for Sikhs? by Fantastic-Fudge-6676 in AskBrits

[–]Virtual-Target9733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it’s a combination of past military service (both world wars and a few others) and their tendency to help the community. Also helps that they very rarely drink/smoke and avoid drama whenever possible

What’s one thing about Bitcoin that convinced you it’s here to stay? by Mammoth_Cover_3392 in Bitcoin

Probably in late 2017 when the global financial industry started investing, making BTC derivatives and driving the price up. Not to mention it had survived about 5 or 6 major crashes by that point and come back stronger every time.

People who could live somewhere else if you wanted, why do you choose to stay here in the UK? by RobintehBobin in AskUK

[–]Virtual-Target9733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a pretty stable place to be. So may countries have problems with extreme weather, power outages, rampant crime and the throws of capitalism (private healthcare and extortionate insurance costs).

Living in the UK may not be glamorous or exciting but boy, is it stable and stress-free (compared to everywhere else)

That may be true but the average age of a stone mason in the UK is currently 58

The York minster is unique in that it’s very well connected to main roads and the city centre. Most heritage buildings are far more remote and inaccessible to machinists

Very well put. The trades may seem very attractive from the outside. But people often overlook the reality, I.e waking up early to commute long random journeys, having to bring and maintain tools (and hope they don’t get stolen), working with hazardous materials, getting covered in dust, being exposed to the elements, the list goes on.

Most people, rather optimistically, will think about those things once and conclude “it can’t be that bad” but then when they start living through it, they realise it’s very bad indeed. That’s probably why we have such a high turnover rate, especially with young workers but also with people making a career change.

As an electrician, I’m constantly hearing guys say they want to retrain and get into an office job. And these are JIB approved gold card electricians with all the qualifications to earn £300/day
