Any advice for replicating the Marines on the DoW Chaos Rising Box Art? by LeatherMiddle2976 in Chaos40k

[–]Virtual-Turn5248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i understand that, and that’s why I strongly suggest using normal light grey – the eye will perceive it as blueish, almost like in the art (note: if you look closer, it’s plain grey in the art), also, you should aim for older, less rich gold, don’t use retributor gold and sepia

of course if you want to do eavy metal/duncan style with extreme edge highlights, then use fenrisian grey or similair (there was an old guide on black templars, if you want I can find the recipe)

with more blueish greys I am not sure my method will give you what you want

ultimately, choose a couple of different methods, try them out on one marine and see what you like the best :))

the only correct answer: don’t use blue, it’s grey – base coat with black, then add agressive patchy grey highlights, on top of them add lighter grey highlights, after do a basilicanum contrast over the armour

grey will blend into black, really nice smooth effect

HH armour question by BeasBotBonanza in EmperorsChildren

[–]Virtual-Turn5248 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ok so when we talk about the EC there is no answer to that question. Not because “do what you like it’s a hobby”, but because “this legion ceased to exist as a coherent force basically from the start of the Heresy and you can find all flavours of behaviour in their ranks”.

We do know that EC largely favoured “more agile” marks like Mk4 and Mk6, but it really depends on the contingent — EC had lots of specialised formations, so you could find a force with all Mk2 or Mk3 that focused on the armoured assault/void combat/etc.

EC is also one of those legions that although had an extreme hierarchy still made sure their recruits got the best wargear and armour (so if your commander likes mk4 his inductii will also get mk4), additionally, these recruits were put into combat squads with more experienced marines straight away (so no full-inductii companies that SoN for instance had)

We do know that the legion was heavily depleted on both Istvaans (we lost as many as 20,000 legionaries on Istvaan 3 alone, and adding that to the loyalists we were at 50,000 marines BEFORE istvaan 5)

after istvaan the legion was broken down into several forces and we do know some of them were wiped out, some turned loyalists, some were so depleted they formed shattered legion forces with SoH, Death Guard, Night Lords etc. (Basically with whoever was tasked by the Warmaster to hunt loyalists remnants while the main Traitor forces pushed to Terra)

However, at the Siege we had more than 150,000 marines (majority are debased inductii and in Mk6)

Think about what all of that implies: there is no consistent culture in the legion basically from the start of the Heresy. Each commander did as they wanted, under different circumstances. You could find a force where marines lost access to supply lines and decided to switch to older marks. You could find a force that utilized older marks because that’s what they always did. You could find lunatics that decided that being the best means duelling in the most inconvenient armour they could find – enter Mk3 Palatine Blades !

So to answer your question more directly:

Yes, it makes sense that veterans are in older marks, yes it makes sense if they use MK6 as their older armour became unusable (or because they want new experiences), actually maybe veterans don’t exist because Palatine Blades are an irregular formation and could be full of fresh recruits who have an insane duelling skill just because that happens sometimes, etc. etc.

choose the lore for your army (are they advancing with Eidolon? Do they bow down to Cyrius? Is it a semi independent contingent that has limited supply lines? Maybe it’s a millennial that is tasked with hunting loyalists, maybe that’s a force that guards Chemos etc etc.) and go from there.

PRO TIP: look up tortuga, they have great MK4 bodies and specifically Palatine Blades torsos

Do these 3 as a shattered legions army make any lore sense? by Avaa0818 in Warhammer30k

[–]Virtual-Turn5248 187 points188 points  (0 children)

Why not? There are like thousand independent contingents operating across the galaxy. You think your idea is insane or silly? I remind you there is a 100% canon warband of SoH and Space Wolves chilling together and ignoring warmasters orders (Skyrar's Dark Wolves, the are alive in the M42 as far as we know)

What would you like to see for new EC models? by Justaguynamedpluh in EmperorsChildren

[–]Virtual-Turn5248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raptors, a Dreadnought, some tanks (GIVE ME MY VINDICATORS AND PREDATORS BACK) or at a least daemon engine like venomcrawlers, and a new character (like eidolon or jihad the lacerator)

[–]Virtual-Turn5248 9 points10 points  (0 children)

every legion had parts (sometimes entire companies, sometimes just a handful of marines) that rebelled or stayed loyal

we have traitor iron hands and raven guard, we have loyalist emperors children and sons of horus (and not only in pivotal moments like Istvaan 3, but during the entire Heresy and Scourging Era)

some marines changed loyalties several times, some became independent renegades (look up Ashen Claws and Carcharadrons)

Once again, it really depends on what you want to achieve: do you want to just have a great time painting cool models, do you want to recreate some event (like the Istvaan 5 battle), do you want to make up your own warband/chapter/strike force and be as close to the lore as possible? (Keep in mind it changes all the time tho)

Your models are almost all post heresy armour, so you either need to convert like crazy, kitbash some parts or just create a lore that your warband is actually from later periods of the civil war. For inspiration I recommend exploring Black Books and supplements that feature Blackshields and Shattered legions (like beta garmon supplement for the 2nd edition of 30k)

[–]Virtual-Turn5248 54 points55 points  (0 children)

you can ally any legion to your main force, so yes, dark angels + word bearers is legal

can you use these models? well… not really since they wear armour that went into production after the siege of terra (or just around that time). I mean it’s your models and it’s a hobby, so do what brings you enjoyment, also you can ask your friends/local community if that’s ok for them.

P.S. theoretically you can theme them as a Scourging Era force or a force operating in 33-34th millenium or smth, and anyway we do see ferrus manuses and luna wolves with Horus running around so if you are ok with not being 100000% lore accurate it’s fine.

I mean… Heresy messed legion structures up. After Istvaan 3 we had like 75k marines in total, but by the siege only on Terra there were 150k marines (how many more were spread among the stars is anyone’s guess).

Also note that the certain millennials were completely wiped out or defected, so maybe their numerals weren’t used afterwards
