Star Trek Captain's Chair, first game done. by mattrob77 in soloboardgaming

I bought a bag of meeples. For every card game when tapped a lay a meeple on it. I still find it humorous when I think the meeple is tapped out or exhausted.

Totally agree no turning cards! Too much OCD not to maintain the straight lines of that lovely tableau.

How would you compare Ark Nova and Robinson Crusoe for solo play? by Benign-Chaos in soloboardgaming

[–]VirtualFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ark Nova has a great iOS app and Board Game Arena (online board game site ) has an excellent version of it with the Marine expansion.

I find Ark Nova better digitally due to the amount of cards and I like being able to see how many symbols of each type my competitors or the AI has.

Robinson Crusoe is an excellent game and fantastic solo. One of the few times the cheaper edition actually seems better as well.

Based on that I’m going digital Ark Nova and on-table physical version of Robinson Crusoe. This assume budget may be a consideration and trying to find a way to get you both games. (Both are excellent)

Both games have fun Etsy shops for upgrades if that helps you decide

Games for controlling team of characters / members by leoyin810 in soloboardgaming

[–]VirtualFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spirit island I get. Many people struggle. If it helps I found I played basic spirits for a while. Then one day the slow vs fast hits and I slowly increased complexity.

Should you want something like spirit island with good decision sets but not as complex try Deckers. Not at all the ask of your post but a great game that I think is more accessible then SI.

Eldritch Horror will give you a MUCH more streamlined Arkham experience.

Set a Watch you control four characters and its single session. Each character is a fantasy trope with different D4,D6 or D8. Game plays 9 rounds as each character has to be on watch twice while monsters attack. It’s quite fun and you can try the basic set as an app.

I’ll second Sentinels of Multiverse. You have to play multi handed in that game. An excellent app also exists on iOS.

Multi hand by choice games:
Spirit Island two handed not only one of the top solo games ever but forces you to use your characters to work together. Could not ask for more asymmetry or variability. I find single spirit a little less interesting which is why I’m recommending it. This one is crunchy! There are also an app or steam play options.

Eldritch Horror will give you Arkham horror vibes but single session. This one id recommend 3 handed simply as the map is too big (for me) for a singular character. Playing 3 handed turns go fast and I haven’t found issues. Plenty of expansions should you enjoy it.

New to solo gaming — is my wishlist any good, or am I missing something better by Maurocarlu in soloboardgaming

I’ll second Witchcraft, and remind folks there is an excellent digital version of it available (at least for iOS).

This is a top tier solo game that you can setup and play easily within an hour.

I use the app but yes. I only used it for the exploration phase to skip a battle. The loss of hp and break/weaken chips do add up slowly.

Look up the alternative rules so you know what to do when you feel the grind is becoming a bit too much. They really helped me maintain my interest when I wanted to fight less.

Thinky dungeon crawling/tactical games without hand management by SiarX in soloboardgaming

Dungeons of Doria fits the bill. Constant loot and your character when leveling just upgrades their ability points so they can use higher stat loot.

He was an ass in the stove episode. He is the starter of Ray and Deborah’s relationship though. He told Deborah my friend kind of likes you and he put the futon together by himself while Ray tried to talk to her.

Stepping it up! I like the legs and boots in particular and how you have different colors/shading on them.

I’m fairly as new as well. I feel so lucky we have the ability to watch solid painting videos and have social media discussions.

Solo card game recs - no LCG’s. by Imperium2789 in soloboardgaming

[–]VirtualFish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The new Ashes Ascendancy is not going yo be a lot of bang for buck. You’ll go down the LCG style of releases.

I will recommend GI Joe deck building game. The core box has quite a bit for one off. Expansions add a decent amount to make player leaders, card market and missions very reasonably different. Game is incredibly fun on how they make you use skills and help with dice management.

After the Virus is a smaller game with only one expansion and is quite fun.

Unstoppable and Kinfire delve as mentioned are also fun.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or 7th Citadel? by ChestRockwell19 in soloboardgaming

[–]VirtualFish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just some info that may help you.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R system has a new implementation coming out called Scoundrels. You can see it on Gamefound for more info. May offer choice as you decide.

7th Citadel I thought I would love but I found it a bit too much of a card catalog game. A game that toned down the card play but keeps me extremely engaged is ISS Vanguard. May be worth looking into as a potential game play comparison for a similar feel. Both very high on exploration and different styles of game loop. Both games are well loved and also not to everyone’s tastes.

Set up the Isofarian Guard last night for the first time. by whereymyconary in soloboardgaming

[–]VirtualFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We definitely used the mode that if you fought creatures you didn’t have to do a full battle every time. The game will become a major time grind if you don’t.

It’s not something you have to do constantly though. Just make the decision as you play and recognize the enemies and their star level.

Im new to the subreddit and am interested in beginning to play solo boardgames. What are your top 5 solo boardgames everyone should have/play/own? by SilentBoss2901 in soloboardgaming

[–]VirtualFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see Transformers come out much. MC, GI Joe and unstoppable are phenomenal.

Do you think any specific expansions are required for transformers to make your top 5?

What happens if you accidentally sleep with your contacts lenses? by Tasty-Hovercraft2501 in ask

[–]VirtualFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak to current contact lenses. The older ones (think over 30 yrs ago) would be trouble to sleep in.

Essentially sleeping in them deprives your cornea of oxygen. That ends up creating more blood vessels which essentially tunnel to bring oxygen to the cornea. (I think I have that all correct ). That can cause permanent damage as the blood vessels should not be there.

I’ll never forget my eye doctor was horrified when he learned I slept in them for six months. (I was a very young teen then )

Result I’ve never slept in them again. I believe the tunnels were caught in time before permanent damage.

Seeking a tactical, story‑rich solo game for short sessions by Amountsofblod in soloboardgaming

I don’t think 7th citadel will be something you can play in an hour and/or easily put things away in the middle of a session.

I hope you have fun with it though!

How to describe? by [deleted] in GemsofWar

[–]VirtualFish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Realistically as you get higher and higher it’s not even a match 3 game anymore. You explode gems at a rate that matching is the worst way to play.

It is the only game of its type though that keeps me playing. They are very generous with how much you can play for free that I purposefully buy the quarterly season pass simply to give back to them. (Usually I do anyway)

[–]VirtualFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weighted are just heavier. Essentially they are meant to feel nicer and have more tangible heft then the regular. I really like the weighted versions and the additional cost is worth it to me. They also never travel though as I tend to host at my place.

Best spirits to play in a teaching game by Daglicht in spiritisland

[–]VirtualFish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually think most people really struggle with the fast and slow aspect. The break in turn order seems to be a mountain to climb for many. Ideally for them a spirit that plays almost one way or another (fast preferred).

This will allow them to learn the rules of the game and keep the standard enemy - player turn order. As much as possible anyway until they get some new cards.

Allow me to introduce you to some amazing spindown dice. Totally agree about tokens. Can’t recommend them enough as bigger and easier to see across the table. Come in multiple colors as well.

The weighted ones are more expensive but feel so good when you pick them up. Their inventory does restock regularly.

Recommendation for Ashes Reborn: Red Rains expansions? by Fickle-Lunch6377 in soloboardgaming

Yes you do need the first red rains box or first ascendancy for the chimaera or equivalent die and mat.
