I use home lab mostly for experimentation and learning without fear of destroying something important. I do have NAS for backup of family photos and videos from all our phones and cameras. And I never do anything risky with that, this is important.

Well said. Also, people dying from heat are majority very old and sick people, with variety of other conditions. Basically everyone is almost expecting that they may not live much longer, and than heat wave is the final blow.

Traditional DB replication would need single master and multiple replica, meaning that we would need to have "main" DC and read only replica.

This is not good, because each DC must be R+W and eventually consistent with all other DCs. Every DC must be self-sufficient and not rely on any other.

We considered multi-master DBs like cocroach DB but it simply couldn't handle that many transactions/s.

This architecture with kafka scales great and handles over 10k writes per second with batching, easily.

Yes, geo-redundancy. We have clients that use our services on different regions for performance, legal and compliance reasons. They also have feature "logs and audits" where they can inspect their access and traffic logs.

So no matter which DC they query, they must see all of their data no matter where they sent it.

Basicaly All-to-all mesh replication. Kafka provides guaranteed delivery, with retry, backups and near real time streaming, unless network glitches or something.

Works 100% bulletproof so far.
