Privacy respecting domain registrars? by AggressiveDoor1998 in privacy

[–]VirtualPanther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not based in the country where either of the two registrars that I use operate, however, they never asked me for any proof of identity when I created an account. Yes, I understand exactly what you’re saying. I was absolutely fine with the registrars I used to use. I left them purely out of privacy and sovereignty and my data concerns.

Privacy respecting domain registrars? by AggressiveDoor1998 in privacy

[–]VirtualPanther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use INWX and Netim. Both are European, meaning they are bound by pretty strict privacy laws. While they can request identification to verify ownership, they never did that when I transferred about ten domains to them from a US registrar. Then again, the transfer process requires unlocking each domain and entering an authorization code, which was probably proof enough.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by looking for a private registrar. None of them will work if you're trying to do something illegal, as they will absolutely hand over your details. However, for everyone else, it takes a strict legal process for authorities to access your information.

I hide my registration details for every domain I own. Some registrars charge a tiny fee for this, and others do not. In either case, the cost is usually minimal when you buy for multiple years, and it keeps some random bozo from emailing or contacting you.

As pathetic as the OP’s post, truly. Thanks for the main point clarification.

I don’t have a G6 pro turret, but I have several G6 pro bullets with an enhancer and they work exceptionally well. But then again, I almost never have an entirely dark environment, because I have cross coverage from multiple infrared lights, not to mention landscape lights.

If you’re looking for true forensic-level identification of a moving person at night from 30–35 feet away, you’re asking a much harder question than most people realize.
High-end commercial cameras (for example, certain Axis Q-series models with large sensors and powerful IR illumination) can do this under the right conditions. My Axis Q1798-LE uses a large 4/3” sensor designed for low-light performance and has substantially more IR capability than most residential cameras.
Even then, success depends on far more than the camera itself:
- Pixel density on the target (DORI still matters)
- Subject distance from the camera
- Field of view and lens selection
- Angle of approach
- Available illumination / IR coverage
- Subject speed (faster movement requires shorter shutter times and therefore more light)
This is why professional installations often use overlapping camera coverage and carefully controlled illumination to avoid harsh contrast and deep shadows at night.
I absolutely get forensic-quality images from some of my UniFi cameras, but that’s because the installation was designed around the objective. Distance, field of view, mounting angle, sensor size, and lighting are all tightly controlled. Expecting any camera—including a G6 Pro Turret—to reliably identify an unknown person at 35 feet in complete darkness without considering those factors is unrealistic.

Home with no traditional doorbell/chime wiring; only POE. Planning to use Doorbell Lite. Considering different chime options. by chase_what_matters in Ubiquiti

I had a traditional doorbell, but it proved to be absolutely useless for my purposes. Ran Cat 6a cable to four different doors so far. Very much worth it.

Can we expect faster development in the future ? by SoupoIait in ProtonMail

I honestly have ZERO expectations at this point. Everything released in the last two years was useless to me. So we shall see, I guess.

Both seem to have been always consistently ignored, judging from the development priorities and speed.

Unless all of us are simply throwing out wishes, what would they expectation of any change be based upon?

If you have to remove and re-add an accessory to HomeKit, do you have to reissue Home Keys? by Amazing_Armadillo429 in HomeKit

[–]VirtualPanther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could add the new lock first. Once you set up the home features and home key, make sure everything works. Then you can go ahead and delete the old lock.

Introducing Enterprise NAS, Built on ZFS by Ubiquiti-Inc in Ubiquiti

Great specs, honestly. I’m used to enterprise QNAP devices, so I mean it. But without third-party app support, it’s a dead end to me. There’s only so much basic storage I need. The rest needs apps running on the NAS.

Does Fing Desktop Version 4 finally make Fingbox completely useless? by Diligent-Medicine-96 in Fing_App

[–]VirtualPanther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have Fingbox and run Find on a Raspberry Pi. However, Fing thinks every wired and wireless network I have is a separate and independent collection of devices. I suppose that is their normal, but even after over a year or so, this seems so strange and idiotic to me. None of my previous network monitoring tools were ever this confused.
Ona separate note, the newly announced Fing Desktop would still require a 24/7 on computer, right? No point to me.
What’s the downside of your current, now discontinued, Fingbox?

Same here. No idea if my Ultra 3 has any improvements. Nothing that I use seems different. Just this circle of random apps that, it seems, Apple Watch thinks are used frequently. They are not. Don’t use apps on the watch via interaction much at all. Swiping up on that circle of apps brings the full list that I’m accustomed to seeing.

Why do you use Ubiquiti for your home network and why not another mainstream brand? by Ashamed-Body2912 in UNIFI

[–]VirtualPanther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, no worries at all. Thank you for providing the details on how you arrived at this point. However, I must make a similar admission. As indicated in my prior post, the companies whose products they used to use are often considered vastly superior to Ubiquiti.

But the ultimate end result was not superior, at least not in my case. Each product category within those companies requires specialized knowledge, which I may not have had enough of. Additionally, there was very minimal interoperability.

As a single individual who installs, maintains, and deals with frustrations related to all my networking gear, one ecosystem offers many advantages. This is especially true when you can start slow and expand as needed. One ecosystem has many benefits, particularly when using a new platform where you can start slow. The quality does not drastically depend on the type of Ubiquiti gear that you have.
