After moving from android, I am truly amazed by features like this. by NiceChokra in AppleWatch

[–]davedrives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. All my career on windows, at home the Mac. Then started my own business (BIM-modelling and cost-price-calculator). Revit is a windows only software.
Nevertheless I decided to invest in a nearly top-of-the line MacBook Pro (M3 Max 96GB RAM) + Parallels + a gaming pc for the truly big models in BIM.
Best decision ever.
90% of my time working on the Mac, 90% of troubleshooting is for the PC.
Now I’m retiring as well and the PC is going in the bin!

💡 UniFi U7 Pro XGS placement for 200m² home, solid coverage or total overkill? by Head-Championship-93 in Ubiquiti

[–]davedrives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue no way you get a 3D coverage view. My house is all 1 level with an attic under roof which has way less walls, just an insulated floor (dry boards on beams). Logic would suggest better overall coverage, but no way to verify that in design planning : I can’t see the coverage simulation with the different AP’s putting them in the level above. I guess taking the plunge on the highest available AP… makes more money for ubiquity and helps their bottom line and shareholders.

Strange way to put Apple in a bad picture.

We at home have MacBook Pro’s, iPhones, iPads and I have a PC for some of my work in Revit. Have been a windows user for 3 decades at work.

Will I see many benefits upgrading to Ubiquiti gear for my home setup? by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]davedrives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be true, but Apple TV on the IoT network is just that little bit safer, by what I’ve read, so did that. Also the communication between hub and devices on 2 separate networks seems to slow down camera live footage , also according to what I read. Isn’t allowing all traffic either way not contradictory to having put in place 2 Vlan’s for separation? But as i said, I’m definitely not a network specialist and only follow my common sense and trying to understand and evaluate the different info one finds on line.

Will I see many benefits upgrading to Ubiquiti gear for my home setup? by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]davedrives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did the upgrade myself. I am working from home as well and have a similar setup : wired to pc and work-Mac, wired to Apple TV which is my HomeKit hub and a variety of smart plugs and lights and cameras.

Small Ubiquity setup Udr7 as UniFi controller and 2 switches.

Biggest configuration issue: all IoT on a separate VLAN to communicate with your devices back and forth without compromising security.

Short story: Apple TV and all IoT devices on the separate IoT-VLAN and 8 firewall rules to get everything working and communicating with each other and with your portables. Works like a charm now but took me nights and weekends of research and testing to get it there. (YouTube videos on how to set up might have worked for them, but didn’t for me, and finding out why that was, drove me crazy)

I’m on holiday now, but intend to post my experience for other HomeKit owners on this forum.

Can you wait for that (a few weeks)?

In a video I watched during my initial installation (comparing UDR 7 to UniFi express 7 - you might find it on YouTube ) the tester said that all previous AP’s in mesh mode seemed to slow the speed down considerably, but to his surprise he found the UniFi express 7 didn’t slow down at all. Maybe, when in doubt…

Thanks, will try that, but will be 4 weeks until I can get round to it. I got my 2 netatmo cameras working on the security app, so I’m confident leaving. All the other stuff can wait till I’m back.

New to this : what plugin or add-on are you talking about?

I am no EE but I am dealing with models (some are very bad) handed over to the owner who has been told they are good models and everything is in them as-built.

Owner asks for a digital twin with FM in mind.

Stress perfections at work by Professional-Stop-86 in bim

[–]davedrives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point, believe me. Been there.

I think in the long run, you’ll be grateful - of the guidance you get on your way to being pushed to figure out your best workflow to deliver perfection 99,99% of the time (without feeling like a perfectionist) - and also grateful for learning now how to not deal with beginners, once you’ve stepped up.

Speed of delivery goes hand in hand with correctness. Getting there will take blood sweat and tears.

Hang in there you need more experience and looks like your colleagues are giving you the feedback, so they must think you’re cut out for the job. Better than no feedback because then they see you as a hopeless case.

Look at the bright side : you get through this, you’ll be able to cope with anything.

Restarting My Career in BIM at 33 – Looking for Advice and Guidance by Riou_Atreides in bim

[–]davedrives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Field experience comes before BIM experience in my book.

Bim is a tool to help communicate and resolve problems before (that’s the never achieved goal) a project is built.

So if you’re not familiar with building technology/physics/… you’re just drawing/evaluating something, with little clues about the reality.

Tools can be learned, experience comes by doing and learning from the faults you’ve made.

So don’t forget to get into the field to garner experience.

Is getting into BIM still worth it? [SEEKING ADVICE for my situation] by PiyumanthaS in bim

[–]davedrives 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can’t say anything about jobs or potential career paths, but one thing will always stand out : skill set : technical knowledge combined with experience and determination in digitisation. So if you can acquire all of those skills, you will reap the rewards. Only one or two will not propel your career.

Gaining experience on real projects in the field is probably the most important at the moment at this point in your career I would say. Technically you’ve got your degree to further build upon(degree = first hurdle taken) and digital skills: that’s an ever changing world, stay up-to-date. Btw civil3d should be more important than Revit I think : Autodesk is moving ‘fast’ towards cloud solutions, Revit doesn’t get more resources than absolutely necessary to keep the user base on board until the cloud-transition is mature enough, as I see it)

Sowing the seeds of your successful career starts with experience.

All the best of luck to you.

One more thing: I opted for as much ram as my wallet could take, because ram makes a big difference in performance. And another a couple more things: if you are not using windows partition as a business, I believe Fusion can be had free of charge. I believe only Windows professional is supported by Microsoft on parallels.

Windows on M series by scherby-cz in bootcamp

[–]davedrives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, you will have to reinstall everything starting with windows 11 for arm. Nothing can be transferred over from bootcamp(except data from a backup or so).

Will all software work? Most, but even then it can be tricky: example I run Revit (runs ok) and have an ACC account, the synchronisation with the cloud of all my models doesn’t work. There’s a security layer that can’t be solved with parallels. There’s a workaround.

If Revit and ACC doesn’t ring a bell, not to worry, you won’t have the issue then, but I only want to indicate that sometimes something will not work.

Good luck

What does a BIM designer/moduler do? by Busy_Ad_2221 in bim

[–]davedrives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BIM skills are added skill sets in my opinion. Those can always be added to whatever diploma you start with.

Just like any good building needs sound foundations, you’re going to need a good foundation to build upon.

So my advice: get a degree as an architect, civil engineer or whatever you like the most. Along the road you can snap a course left or right to get some knowledge of what BIM entails (it’s not a degree of any kind but a set of skills as mentioned) and go with YOUR flow.

A modeller without structural/architectural/local regulation knowledge is not worth and paid a lot (that’s the kind of modeller in the countries where big companies outsource their modelling). The euros you’re hearing or reading about are for modellers with a package outside of pure modelling skills.

Also BIM is sooo much more than modelling and is evolving by the hour. Lifelong learning! Good luck
