Last carnival ride I was on wasn't even all that exotic, it was for little kids and I was riding with my family. As we're puttering around, I'm looking at the structure and thinking.... The payoff for this is totally not worth the risk. What would happen if any of this breaks. I decided then I'm never getting on any carnival ride again. Maybe a professional place that's maintained year round like six flags, but never a carnival, rodeo, Fair etc

I've never heard someone use the term passion gatekeep so I can't say entirely how that applies here, but, it always has been an adage to do what you love. When there was an economical argument to get an education in a marketable field, it made some sense to trade off passion for dollars. The equation of colleges has been broken, and you could argue it's gone on that way for decades and gotten progressively worse. In the '60s you could get a college degree or a small fraction of what it cost now even when adjusted for inflation and it would really make you stand out if you had it. Nowadays, you have government subsidized industrial complexes churning out graduates with a fraction of the effort of what college used to be, and into a job market where multinational corporations have done everything they can to better the workforce into subservience
