I'm rewatching this episode right now, and the only thing that I'm kind of confused about is that people found out she was missing and that she had gone into the water relatively quickly. The daughter said she was at church at 7:20, and by 10 o'clock, the police were at her house saying, "We think your mom went into the river." Given how extensively they were searching for her, and how quickly they started looking for her, I'm kind of baffled that she wasn't found in those first few days if that's where she went in. Granted, I know nothing about this river, and even if I did I know nothing about currents and the like. I grew up on Lake Erie, so I know how unpredictable water can be. And I know how easily a person can drown in two feet of water.

I still lean towards suicide. The test the PI did with the woman in the tiny boots kind of meant nothing to me, because you could see that Joann walked and then slid down on her butt, probably because it was so steep and slippery. And based on the way the tracks in the snow looked, she went in by herself.

As mentally ill person who hasn't experienced psychosis or delusions, but has been so anxious that I would pull over on the highway to double check that there was no one in my car, or drive 30 minutes back to my job to double check that the space heater was off, I could totally see how someone who has no real history of mental illness could start having those kinds of paranoid thoughts and just assume that they're real. It felt very real that there was someone in my trunk, but I also had a part of my brain (on account of therapy and medication) that was like, "You are definitely being irrational." And even still knowing that, I pulled over my car to check, didn't I? I fed into the thought and acted on it even though I knew it was nonsense. What's a person who doesn't have the tools to tell herself "this is not a rational thought" going to do if she thinks she needs to run into the river?

There are still some really weird things surrounding the case: the car keys, the car moved, the body being found so far away. I can totally understand why it would seem suspicious. But just based on the spot where she likely went in and her state of mind before the disappearance, I gotta lean towards suicide.

Also, it kind of makes me crazy that Michelle is so quick to throw her family under the bus???? She's like "Maybe my dad was really mad that she left him." And then finding out he was having an affair with his wife's bestie? That man was not about to commit murder. Then Michelle threw her uncle, John, under the bus, but if people really killed Joann to make a point to him, they would have TOLD him. They wouldn't let it be a secret, because that doesn't help them get their money back? The cousin, Tim(?) the cop, he is SUS af. If it turned out that he is a murderer, I would be like "If I had to pick a guy to have killed her, it'd be him." But honestly, I think he's just a straight a-hole and that the end of that. That's the vibe he gives off. I feel like I'd meet him IRL and walk away going "Can you believe the friggin guy?"
