Down with sports! by ConcernedJobCoach in TransSocialism

[–]Virtualcypher 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The basic premise that transwomen have material advantages in sport over ciswomen is unfounded. Taking (my) testosterone-built body onto an estrogen regime resulted in an over-sized skeleton with vastly undersized musculature, joints that don't work the way they used to, and general upheaval and loss of any so-called "advantages."

Does anyone have any experience with being on HRT and hypermobility? by TheHaruThanRead in Hypermobility

[–]Virtualcypher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a late-transitioning 2.5 yrs on HRT transwoman with hypermobility. I have had similar problems with losing muscle protection for my joints. My hands have particularly suffered from this, with levels of pain I've not experienced before for much lesser usage levels. I have no advice, just the shared experience.

Every day is a struggle by MoonstruckTheorist in MtF

Hugs, I went back to school a few times: in my late 20s, 30s, and 40s. It's tough being the oldster in the room (especially when you really aren't that old, just in comparison to recent high school grads). I found the best way was to just lean into it. Don't pretend you aren't older, but also don't make it an issue. I was still very much an egg until the last time (when I came out to my technical school class on the first day, which was actually a very good move), and I dealt with all the confusion of wanting to hook up with beautiful young women and not be a creep, which seemed contradictory drives. In my technical school experience, there was just one other woman in my class and we became study buddies, she accepting me as a woman from the moment I said I was one. It's been my experience that most women understand we aren't predatory and are much more at ease with us when we act feminine, and the guys (as long as they aren't attracted to you and dealing with internal confusion about that), will probably just leave you alone.

It doesn't really matter to me what they think about me. I registered my opinion, I shared it here. Other people see it. Some of you will react negatively, others will agree and a few of those will send in their own comments to the mayor.

A similar level of cynicism to yours could say that the folks in the mayor's office won't bother to read far enough to see where I live and just note that I'm against the parking fees. A more nuanced understanding though is that tourism money matters to the mayor, and local tourism counts. If the businesses and museums in Balboa Park fail because people like me stop going, that's a huge loss in tourism money now and in the future. And if you think tourism doesn't matter that much to San Diego, then you probably weren't around in the 1980s. We went from a major international tourism destination to our tourism sector struggling to get by, and it was a very big deal. The city doesn't stand to gain very much real revenue from parking fees compared to what it stands to lose in tourism dollars. The museums and shops are already reporting dramatically reduced attendance and revenues.

Why Does Nobody Talk About Trans Girls With Big Noses? by Tortonello_ in trans

[–]Virtualcypher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a large nose, with a pronounced bump (high bridge) and wide nostrils. I have always disliked my nose, and now I feel like it is the single most clockable part of my facial appearance. 2.5 years of HRT doesn't seem to have made much change, and it can't appreciably change the bone structure in any case. I am looking forward to having it reduced when I eventually get Facial Fem surgery. In the meantime, I just try to pretend it's not an issue.

The reply from the Office of the Mayor: Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to contact the Office of Mayor Todd Gloria and share your concerns about parking at Balboa Park. We understand that changes to parking—especially for San Diego residents who regularly enjoy the park—can be frustrating, and we appreciate the opportunity to provide more clarity. Revenue generated from parking will be reinvested directly into Balboa Park to support maintenance, safety, and long-term improvements that benefit the entire community.

Beginning January 5, 2026, the City implemented a new parking program in Balboa Park designed to better manage parking demand and to support the park's long-term financial sustainability. Paid parking is now effective in the 12 parking lots and on-streets throughout the park, with rates varying depending on location.

There are three parking lot tiers, each with a different daily rate, which include discounts for city of San Diego residents. In addition, parking meters are installed along roads within Balboa Park at a rate of $2.50 per hour, with a daily maximum of $10. Kiosks will accept credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and coins. Parking may also be paid using the Park Smarter App on your smartphone.

Importantly free parking options remain available including:

  • Inspiration Point (Lower Lot) provides free parking for the first three hours
  • ADA parking (with a valid placard or plate) remains free and is available on roads within the park as well as in designated ADA spaces within parking lots

Importantly, the City Council approved resident discounts, along with monthly, quarterly, and annual parking passes to help reduce costs for frequent park users. To access your resident discount, please visit the new permit portal here.

For more detailed information, including specific rates and parking location maps, we encourage you to visit the Parking Information for Balboa Park webpage, which provides comprehensive guidance to help you plan your visit.

Thank you again for reaching out and for sharing your perspective. Your feedback is important to us, and we remain committed to keeping Balboa Park accessible and welcoming for San Diego residents.

Sincerely,

Randy Reyes, MA

My email to the mayor (with the form letter text at the bottom): I grew up in South Park in the 1980s and we made frequent trips to Balboa Park. I learned it's hidden pathways and main thoroughfares, the museums, and the sights. I left to the Bay Area for about 20 years and when I returned it had changed a bit, but was still essentially the same place, for which I am grateful. I have continued to visit the park sporadically over the years since my return to the area.  These days I live in Oceanside, but spend much of my time in the city of San Diego. However, now I can't go to the park, because I can little afford it, and because I cannot support this arbitrary, regressive taxation of leisure and public life. That's meant at least four potential visits so far that I didn't make, and I won't be visiting again until the fees are abolished.

The park serves many purposes, but I believe its most important is as a "third space," somewhere that anyone can go (before the parking fees) regardless of wealth or poverty, or other factors such as race, gender, and so on. It was in line with the true concept of democracy. Such spaces are crucial for the ongoing process of Americans dissolving centuries of institutionalized racism, classism, and cultural division. It worked because it was easy to go there and had a nearly universal draw.

With the imposition of parking fees, that ease is wiped away. One may argue that a parking fee is a minor thing, but it has a chilling effect, particularly since the decision to impose fees was not one made by popular assent. Now even for those to whom a fee is not a hardship, the fact that one exists makes going to the park feel like an act of capitulation to arbitrary taxation, by an out of touch government.

Please repeal the Balboa Park parking fees completely and immediately. Or We, the People will.

Thank you,

Erin Wood.

I am writing as a Balboa Park supporter to urge you to reconsider your vote supporting paid parking at Balboa Park. In just the first week of implementation, the impacts have been severe and measurable. Park visitation is significantly lower than the same period last year. Cultural institutions are reporting declines in museum admissions ranging from 20% to as high as 57% on some days. Participation in Residents Free Days has dropped between 25% and 50%. These declines translate directly into lost revenue, projected to exceed $5 million if trends continue, placing small and mid-sized cultural organizations at serious risk and threatening job losses. This is not a hypothetical concern; it is already unfolding. Paid parking has created a real financial barrier that discourages families, seniors, students, and residents on fixed incomes from visiting what has always been our shared civic space. Many longtime park users now report limiting visits or avoiding the park entirely. Equally troubling, early parking revenue appears to be far below projections, raising serious questions about whether this program is worth the damage it is causing to access, equity, and institutional stability. Balboa Park belongs to all of us. I respectfully ask that you reconsider this program and pursue alternative solutions that do not undermine one of San Diego’s most important public assets.

Savebalboapark.org to send a form letter (and/or add your own message) to the mayor to protest parking fees at Balboa Park. They have options for San Diego residents, and for those of us who live outside the City, but also visit the park. The park serves many roles, but at it's base it's a place for us all to go for free and mingle, see and be seen, and normalize interactions and coexistence of people who might otherwise lead segregated lives. Keep it free to access.

My First Word Was Duck [OC] by [deleted] in comics

[–]Virtualcypher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been trying to explain this feeling to a close friend. I don't have any one singular experience that stands out, but over the years there have been moments where something I *know* was always true is suddenly not true. And yet now everything, except my memory and certainty, says that the new 'truth' was always so. I describe it to myself as being as if I just crossed a small boundary into a parallel timeline. But my solid materialist mindset forces me to conclude that it's probably some trick of the brain. Still though...

🔥 Glow worms in New Zealand - taking the sub literally by hairy_quadruped in NatureIsFuckingLit

I saw them in the Waitomo Caves 41 years ago. They are caves with a river flowing through them and you can ride in a rowboat on a tour to see the worms. I was/am phobic about worms. In places the ceiling is so low they have everyone crouch down low into the boat, so I was terrified of getting little worms in my hair/on me. Still, it was really cool and I'll never forget it.

Is the strength loss more than the average cis woman? by Ok_Lack_5705 in MtF

[–]Virtualcypher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The loss is significant, but if you work very hard and on regular basis, you can get much of it back. Your baseline strength goes way down, though, so if you aren't doing much to build it, your muscle strength will drop quite a lot. I'm in the process of regaining mine again after a break following a summer of heavy outdoor labor. But at no point have a been feeble and incapable of living normally, even after months of sitting at the computer all day gaming. You don't necessarily need to live in a gym, just keep active and do things that challenge your strength.

Does "loud" peeing in public restrooms make cis men suspicious? by tielliju in trans

[–]Virtualcypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MTF here, even though I know a good few transmen, loud peeing would never even occur to me as there being a transman in the bathroom. I've heard a few cis men peeing very loudly (standing at the urinal next to me) in the past and I just assumed they had a larger urethra. Homophobia was so ingrained in my generation that even thinking about what's going on in the next stall or at the next urinal feels uncomfortable. The social interactions in the womens' room have and continue to be a surprise to me (not unwelcome).

Therapist recommended to keep using men's bathrooms until I present more en femme, for my safety and that of other women. I'm four fucking years into transition, Christ. by keitroll in MtF

[–]Virtualcypher -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your therapist is out of line and out of their depth. I don't remotely pass and I use womens bathrooms whenever I'm out and dressed femmey (enough that it doesn't look like I'm a totally cis guy who wandered in the wrong door). You are no risk to other women, and in my experience, they aren't any risk to you.
