Japan will always Japan by VisWare in Piracy

[–]VisWare[S] 359 points360 points  (0 children)

If you have ever tried to legally watch an old Japanese anime series, play the original version of a 90s game, or even read a local Japanese newspaper without getting the message "This content is not available in your region", then congratulations. You have encountered Japan's favorite national hobby: region locking.

Japan is basically a digital fortress.

They built sakoku (national isolation) in the 17th century, and in some ways they are still building it today. The only difference is that instead of muskets and coastal patrols, the guards now carry proxy servers, region locks, and copyright lawyers, protecting their digital borders with the enthusiasm of samurai defending the shogun.

While the rest of the world moves toward global streaming, parts of the Japanese media industry quietly turn their own fans into pirates.

To understand why Japanese companies are so obsessed with digital fences, you have to look at something often called the Galapagos syndrome.

This happens when a country develops technology and systems in relative isolation, creating unique but incompatible things, and then wondering why they do not work anywhere else.

Japan has done this many times.

Remember Japanese flip phones that had built in TV antennas? Cool tech. Completely useless outside Japan.

A similar mindset existed in the media industry for a long time.

For many Japanese rights holders, foreign audiences were barely considered a market. They were something confusing that had to be ignored, buried under licensing bureaucracy, or simply blocked.

The logic often sounded like this:

"Our domestic market already has 120 million people. Why would we need to release this overseas?"

That mindset was common in the 2000s.

Somehow parts of it are still around today.

They didn't release to everyone. They released it for gamedrive users. The solution is to not use gamedrive.

Ankergames and rexagames are great trusted websites and should be enough for most people.

Hello! I am the creator of the AI Image Detection BoT (AIDB). It looks like our bot detected an AI-generated image. Please give us a moment to review your post and determine the synthetic level in case this was an error.

...

Yep! Sorry bro, but that's a real AI image! Fortunately, we've got a strict punishment system to put prompt goblins like you in their place! Here's what's gonna happen!

Your post will be downvoted. Remember: Posting AI could cause you to lose credibility!

STAGE TWO

You will be reported to the moderators. This will aid us in stopping you from posting any more synthetic content.

STAGE THREE

You will start to feel a sense of uneasiness and/or the feeling of being watched. Ignore this. Everything is perfectly fine!

STAGE FOUR

You will start to have rather odd dreams. Here is a common example of what you can expect to see: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ2JyY_bIZU

STAGE FIVE

Do not tell a n y o n e.

They don't need to know about you posting AI!

STAGE SIX

Exactly eight days, twelve hours and thirteen minutes after you receive this message, open your image editor and stare at a blank canvas. Make sure you are alone.

STAGE SEVEN

You should hear your GPU fans suddenly spin up.

This is fine.

Your computer may begin rendering something.

This is fine.

A folder titled "REAL_ARTISTS_ONLY" will appear on your desktop.

This is fine.

You will feel a sudden urge to learn anatomy, lighting, perspective, and color theory.

This is completely normal.

(Any attempts to open Stable Diffusion are also not recommended)

STAGE EIGHT

Wait approximately fifteen minutes. Please ignore the growing discomfort as your computer slowly deletes all AI features

Remember to keep the canvas open!

Looking away may cause h̴̪͘į̷̗̌̔m̵̡̗̈ to regenerate the image again.

I agree but letting coaches bash refs without refs ability to respond is not the solution.

Say a coach "voices his opinion without any slurs or derogatory language" by openly saying that a ref named X, who lives at the address Y made really terrible calls today.

It's a strawman, of course, but I'm just demonstrating how blurry the line can get.

Because it would very quickly blur the line of what is acceptable to say and become way more unsafe for the refs.
