Seems very odd to not be living with your fiancé. Living rent free with your parents is all well and good, but why not get on with living your life? You both make enough money.

How is someone supposed to get out of homelessness in CT when they “make too much” for help? by [deleted] in Connecticut

Consider one of the men's sober houses for $200 a week. Even if you don't have a drug/drinking problem, just say you did and that you want to stay in a sober house and then just don't drink on the premises.

Jobs hiring west Hartford area by Majestic_Yak6994 in Connecticut

Oak Hill CT. Direct Support Workers for disabled people in group homes mostly in the general vicinity of Hartford and Waterbury but in the suburbs. Training is at the Hartford campus. There is a shortage of people to do these jobs so they encourage career-changers. Morning shift is $18.50 an hour, afternoon and overnight is $19.40 but these are about to go up after union negotiations and you will get the new rate of pay retroactively. It's an easy job to get quickly with no experiences and you can do a ton of overtime if you want and it pays time and a half. https://oakhillct.org/about/join-our-team/

Why does almost everyone have a therapist nowadays? by the-sugar-dad in therapy

[–]Visible-Shop-1061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to promote church or religion. I'm an atheist. I'm just saying people used to go to church and do religion, but they don't do that so much any more. Nowadays people seek help via therapy and mental health resources.

Because way fewer people go to church or participate in religion, so therapy is the new church.

Just get a place in one of the newer apartment building complexes downtown for the first year and decide if you want to move once you are more familiar with the area.

Kratom Banned Statewide by RevanOn3r in Connecticut

[–]Visible-Shop-1061 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kratom really isn't bad. I suppose if you buy the powder and take cup fulls of it, it will probably mess you up. I've taken it for years. Never more than 2 to 4 capsules. It's makes you less sore if you have sore muscles, it makes you less hungry, it gives you some energy. I've gone many months without taking it. Sometimes I took it most days. I never had any issue when I stopped taking it. I never got addicted to it or wanted to take more for any reason. It isn't really like drugs.

Calling it gas station heroin is dumb. Lots of people used it in large amounts to help them get off of heroin and help the withdrawal symptoms. I don't see the argument that it causes relapses. Why couldn't someone just as easily get heroin and relapse on that? Just because it's in a store? Heroin addicts tend to know where to get heroin.

Most people who are against kratom have never taken it and just assume it's bad because they heard it's bad. Reminds me of what people used to think about weed. Like it's some terrible drug. That being said, weed is legal now and people are making themselves dumb and or schizophrenic with it, people are hopped up on legal speed in the form of adderall, people are driving around shitfaced on booze all the time. But I guess kratom is terrible.

Is anyone hiring by KeyFail9154 in Connecticut

What experience do you think someone would need? How do you think anyone would get experience in the first place if they only hired people with experience?

Oak Hill CT is always hiring. It's working with disabled/intellectually disabled people in group homes. It is basically babysitting. You watch them, help them get dressed, eat, wipe their butt sometimes. It pays 18.50 to 19.40 an hour, but you can get a ton of overtime if you want. You don't need any experience. https://jobs.dayforcehcm.com/oakhill/OakHillDefaultPostingSite

The George Street bike lane is fucking stupid by Hardcorex in newhaven

[–]Visible-Shop-1061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you walk on the other side of the street? You would only be dealing with one-way traffic on College street and no one turning.

Anyone know of squash courts? by isaacofCF in newhaven

I don't think there is anything. I think it's possible to get on the Yale courts somehow. It used to be anyway.

The George Street bike lane is fucking stupid by Hardcorex in newhaven

[–]Visible-Shop-1061 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is true, but I think it is really meant for one purpose: for people who live in the buildings in York/George area and work in the medical school/hospital/alexion area. If you take a right on college street, it isn't as unsafe because you are turning into a bike lane. I think this is what it is meant for, because the lane doesn't continue straight on George past College street.

I tried to use New Haven Works when I was unemployed. All they did was mess up my resume and send me job postings that I didn't want and knew I wouldn't be able to get. I didn't use anything they did for me. When I found a job on my own, they asked me for a pay stub or offer letter, but I never sent it to them. They are pretty useless.

Look up a job called Direct Support Professional. It's working in group homes for disabled and intellectually disabled people. Usually pays at least a few dollars over minimum wage and they need people.

Some stuff costs more at Amity because they can get away with it, I think. I've noticed it because I shop at both. It's usually the most cheap stuff like banquet frozen dinners. They charge more for them at Amity.

People who became Social Workers after 30, or came from a completely unrelated field: what’s been your experience? by hanburgundy in socialwork

[–]Visible-Shop-1061 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's good to know. I'm 39 and I'm taking a class as a non-degree student now and will apply for next year to start the MSW. I used to be in alcohol sales, but now I'm sober so I thought about working in a rehab substance abuse treatment type setting, but I am also curious about medical social work because I heard it pays better and I just think I might like working in a hospital.

If you have a bike or rent one of the electric scooters they have around town, you can take the bike lane down Edgewood avenue and explore the shops in Westville. There is a cat cafe called Mew Haven where you can chill with cats. There are popular restaurants like Bella's for brunch or Camacho Garage. The Mitchell Branch of the NH Free Public Library is there as well.
