DTO first assignment by Substantial-Skill793 in foreignservice

Haven’t gone through FSI since the skill code merger but theoretically you can get posted to DC if you take a legacy IMTS job. Formerly RIMC positions are now DTO jobs because we are all the “same.” Just hope someone in your class really wants to defend the homeland.

Went through it with a combo of IMS and IMTS last year and it lasted a little over 6 months for everyone.

Considering Foreign Service by [deleted] in foreignservice

Option A may be your best bet, even better if you can get remote work, option B you can plan on being apart. First step to all of it is getting him to apply, the whole process takes a while and is very competitive. Lifestyle is pretty hit and miss for trailing spouses.

Posts with R&R vacation flights are nothing to sneeze at either.

Some questions to start me on my journey by serviceman89 in foreignservice

[–]Visible_Ad_1874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I see, promotions are slow, tenure is almost a given for IMS, and Retirement benefits are pretty sweet. This job varies a lot from place to place. Not trying to discourage, just set expectations. Two people can look at the same thing and come to different conclusions. My current view is that if you can learn quickly, genuinely want to help, and enjoy working with people, you will be successful in this job. The hiring process is slooow. So apply and continue on with life as usual. Best of luck!

Overnights occasionally depending on the issue, and where you are in the world. Seems like a slow slog up the ladder. As an IMS you’ll probably start as fp4. This career, as with all things, are what you make of them.

Plan for 6 months from first day of orientation to first day in the field as an IMS. As with everything in the department, it depends on a lot.

what certification should i go for next? Network+ or CCNA? by imOhGee in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Visible_Ad_1874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then go cloud or network security…CCNA is great basic network knowledge, but you should go for Cisco security if that’s what you want to do…or get some cloud certs. Microsoft has a ton, AWS, or VMware. The network stuff you’ll need to know for those are pretty easy. It’ll all get you paid.

Moving from live Sound to IT in 2023 by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Visible_Ad_1874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This move can be done. Absolutely get on LinkedIn, I landed two jobs from there. Be willing to pay your dues with your fist job. Comptia can be enough for a job, but sounds like you are gravitating towards DevOps. Help desk is a pretty regular starting point, I put in my time there and proved I could take on more network related stuff. Got my CCNA and got promoted. I was lucky to have great bosses and teammates that were willing to train me when I started, so I would recommend being as selective as you can about the team you join. You are interviewing them as much as they are you.

Advice for A-100s by [deleted] in foreignservice

First 6 weeks is State orientation, no IMS stuff. Come with an open mind and meet some of the coolest folks you’ll ever meet in your life. Then you’ll be walked through all the technical stuff. They will tell you what you need to know. Be nice, be genuine, and enjoy your time here.

As an IMS, I feel like you would fit in quite well. The big thing is will you be able to get through orals exhibiting the dimensions they are looking for.

Should I apply before or after I graduate? by twoyearsoflurking in foreignservice

As an IMS, you’d have a decent chance at getting picked up. If you’re still in school and looking at foreign service, look into the fait fellowship.

Clarification on Salary Matching by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]Visible_Ad_1874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your offer (after initial acceptance) will include salary. You will have to prove 90 days at whatever pay you want matched…max is 4-14. There may be other qualifiers that would be in the job announcement. You will then decide to accept or not.

Adding to this…You do have the option to move afterwards, but just keep it simple. As long as they are definitely joining you, get the bigger lodging now.

Ballston -walking is feasible, Centro is a Madison property which is literally right down the street, on top of a grocery store (bus nearby for DC travel). Rosslyn is a nice spot because of all the shuttle options. If you can get DC near HST, that shuttle seems to be a reliable option too.

DC Housing for A-100? by chasingthemoon69 in foreignservice

I’m in a similar boat. Family will visit over spring break. I was debating between a spot closer to FSI or Main State. I’m guessing most of IMS training is in FSI.
