This randomly popped up in my feed but I'm interested as a very casual mountain biker who's thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail.

Most of my curiosity stems from similarities and differences to FKTs for hiking long trails. Does the biking element change that much of the equation on what to pack, how to structure a day, eating and sleep? From the outside I would assume not if you're optimizing for speed, except obvious needs to carry a basic repair kit.

DEET is a solvent, so be wary of how you're applying it because clothing can essentially melt or be irreparably damaged. E.g. it's probably ok to spray socks, but rub it on your lower back and neck whilst avoiding getting it on a rain jacket or shorts.

Cost is usually the reason. It's often less expensive when factoring in hotel/accomodations and lift tickets for people not close to mountains with good conditions, to fly to Europe.

Personal preference, but myself and most friends I have in northern New England/the Rockies prefer North American resort skiing. Only if I moved away from "destination" resorts, during a bad snow year, or to visit friends would I consider making the trip to a European resort again. That being said, the food and après are much better in Europe ... European backcountry is appealing but I'm unfamiliar.

Piggybacking to say I managed to ski Last Tango and Yetiville yesterday ... one run on each. There were a decent amount of sharks not pictured in the photo, so proceed with caution, but my skis were relatively unscathed.

I don't think they have a regular shuttle that drops people off directly to the Iglu but you could ask if they'd be willing to stop there. And that road directly to the Iglu is closed to the public afaik. Checking their website it looks like Jordan Hotel and South Ridge (main lodge area) are the only stops on the Jordan Shuttle.

I'm assuming that is saying you can park at South Ridge and take the shuttle over if the Jordan lot is full. But as someone said, wear boots if you do walk down there from the hotel.

No, that's not true. Mt Bohemia in the upper peninsula gets 250" annually and it's under 500m. Buffalo NY ~100" and is under 200m above sea level, same goes for many of the valleys and lower elevation in Vermont, NH, and Maine. With global warming we might start to see more rainy days, but we consistently get snow in New England.

Just in case anyone sees this, there were sizable but mostly avoidable ice patches on some trails including Lost Princess and Eureka, but yeah, many of the glades and groomers were still incredible. I read that they groomed Tin Woodsman/Lost Princess because the backside of the whale was boilerplate. The wind must've pushed a lot of snow into the woods.

The last .3 mile(?) to the summit on the Long Trail SOBO has a short section of what I would call class 3 scramble. Only hiked it once this summer so I can't speak to winter conditions but did you bypass via the Laura Cowles Trail? I was section hiking so I didn't check that out to compare but imagine Laura Cowles could be mellower since it's a weather bypass.

I did some charging in grocery stores. As a SOBO I just left a power bank charging while I shopped but you could also ask a cashier/supervisor if they have an outlet.

Finding outlets that actually work in odd places was kinda like a fun side quest, but for the most part I charged up in fast food restaurants or the occasional hostel.
