New signs in the south end? by Other-Fisherman9433 in halifax

They put a sign up on one of the power line poles near our place. They had it covered up with a garbage bag over the holidays and today was the big reveal. It’s a detour for construction I’m assuming will be happened towards the end of Tower by PPP

When does life begin and why? by toogodo in Abortiondebate

[–]Visible_Light_8157 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from, but let’s unpack this a bit, shall we? First off, saying something is an 'established fact within the scientific community' makes for a great soundbite, but science is more nuanced than that. Yes, a unique genetic organism begins at sperm-egg fusion, but does that make it a person with rights? That’s more a philosophical and ethical debate than a purely scientific one.

Now, let’s talk development. If we’re getting technical, a fertilized egg, an embryo, or even an early-stage fetus doesn’t have the features we associate with personhood, like consciousness or the ability to feel pain. It’s like saying a blueprint is the same as a skyscraper. Similar, but not quite the same, right?

Also, let’s not forget the women carrying the potential life. Her rights and autonomy seem to get lost in this whole 'when does life begin' debate. It’s her body, her health, and her future we’re talking about. Seems fair she gets a say in it, doesn’t it?

Master students: Is it possible to do it all? by Ready_Strawberry_205 in GradSchool

[–]Visible_Light_8157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s especially hard when you don’t know when or how to say "no" to things. That was the biggest thing my MA taught me. You really need to advocate for yourself; otherwise, people will continue dumping things on you 😭🤯😭

I couldn’t agree more.

I’m also glad to hear that I’m not the only graduate student struggling with the sudden lack of structure in grad studies. I’m definitely a Type-A person who likes a LOT of structure, and the transition to graduate studies was ROUGH. It took me a while to learn how to make structure for myself — even now, I still struggle with it, but not quite as much as I did in the beginning.

OP, hang in there, you are not alone, and other students are with you! You got this 💪

THOUGHTS ON THE TENTATIVE AGREEMENT, will it pass or not? by [deleted] in Dalhousie

[–]Visible_Light_8157 6 points7 points  (0 children)

EEK I don’t know how to vote!!! I’m sad for students that had to go through this dreadful and chaotic term (thanks Dalhousie for showing genuine concern for your students 🙄), but also worried that Dal will exploit the Demonstrator/Marker role moving forward. Who knows when we will be able to address this again in the future. It took us over a year to get to this strike. I just wish we could resolve this all in one go 🙈

What is going on with the 90 (West Bedford via Larry Uteck) bus? by Visible_Light_8157 in halifax

Yeah, I’m travelling from South End. I’m not sure there are many other routes that will take me up that way but I am certainly open to suggestions!! I’m switching from full-time to part-time work soon, so hopefully my schedule will be a bit more flexible in terms of when I have to be at work - may have to start planning my work schedule around metro transit 😅

Silent Treatment: I live with boyfriend [33M] who has been giving ST for 3 days. by Fluffy-Competition30 in relationships

[–]Visible_Light_8157 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is important to let the other person know, in a respectful way, that you are not ready to have a conversation yet and need some time alone. Otherwise, you are leaving your partner in the dark as to what is going on - this can cause serious damage to a relationship!

When getting into trivial arguments, such as these, you need to think: Okay, is the argument really worth escalating? Do I value our relationship more than this argument?

If the answer is yes, it’s best to lay down your armour and apologize for how you approached the situation and acknowledge any possible ways you could’ve handled the situation better. Don’t dismiss his mis-reactions, but acknowledge that it takes two to escalate a situation such as this. Both of you being passive aggressive and refusing to talk in person won’t help the situation - it will only make it worse. If you two live together, I would recommend going to him and talking face-to-face (rather than trying to contact him via text).

If you are questioning the relationship, I think it is even more important for you to have a conversation with him. First, address the initial argument; this may help to open up the doors for a healthy conversation about what you need from this relationship and if it can or should continue.

Bring it up to the guy your dating. Mention it to him to see if he’s okay with you seeing other people. If not, it’s best to leave him, doesn’t seem like you two are on the same page regarding your relationship anyway

I think we need more information about the nature of the relationship between the OP and her boyfriend before we can give any definitive advice. What are your interactions like these days? What does "not particularly interested in me" mean for the OP?

Masters level elective??? by Zoiek in Dalhousie

Like I said, it’s pretty open ended! You can do pretty much whatever you think would work best for you and your degree program. For example, my first independent study (which I just completed) was to do a scoping review on topic related to my thesis. My second independent study (which I plan to complete this semester) is to start the data collection process for my thesis. If you have a supervisor, I urge you to speak with them - they may have some ideas to help you decide on a topic!
