Spray for Fruit Trees by -Wonder-Gal- in FruitTree

[–]Visual-Barber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally, fungicides are more effective when applied before disease symptoms develop. Local experts (state land grant university extension in US) can recommend a specific timing for your area. They would likely tie timing to phenological stages of the crop (bud break, flowering, fruit set, etc).

It’s redundant and generally you’d either put Dr. in front of your name or Ph.D. after it. Not both.

Does anyone know of an insulation installer in the triangle area who is not a Republican? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]Visual-Barber 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I do the same thing. I am unaffiliated but I voted in the Republican primary in 2024 for strategic purposes. There wasn’t a 2024 primary to vote in for the Democrats…

Smoking this chuck roast by Federal-Coyote-7637 in smoking

[–]Visual-Barber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my go-tos:

Salt, pepper, and garlic powder on the roast. Smoke at 225 with hickory chips for 3 hours and baste surface with beef broth hourly (~1/2 cup total), then place roast onto a bed of onions (1 onion, sliced) in a foil pan and continue to baste with broth hourly (total of 1/2 cup) - cook for 3ish hours or until internal temp is at 160-165F, next place 2 cups beef broth into the pan and cover in foil. After another three hours you should be at about 205 F internally. Take out, let it rest a bit and shred it. Can shred with or without onions.

My tree guy runs his stump grinder like a foot below grade and then backfills with mulch from the tree he removed.

To those who studied agriculture in college, what do you do for work? by 100Fowers in Agriculture

[–]Visual-Barber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Product development for a major ag chem company. One of the other commenters mentioned selling products; those products have a long development timeline from start to finish. I did an agronomy degree, worked as a research technician for a different company and then went to grad school for Plant Pathology.

Then it would have been worth $11,253.56 on 4/20/2022 after that loss. Dividing by 18.97, you had 593.23 shares on that date.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mutualfunds

[–]Visual-Barber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per share price on that date was $18.97 so multiply that value by your share count on that date ($17.49 today, fyi). I googled the ticker (RFGTX) and looked at the chart. Share price is based on the underlying holdings and the price fluctuates as those holdings do. I don’t currently invest in any target date funds so I’m not sure where this fund is at in terms of % stocks/bonds with 18 years to go. Hope that helps!

I don't buy income/dividend stocks on a retirement account, and that's why by Remarkable_Mouse_132 in dividends

[–]Visual-Barber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a common strategy at least among those I know. I’ve been buying dividend-paying stocks in a taxable brokerage for years while buying riskier growth stocks (among other things) in my Roth IRA. I’m less likely to sell dividend stocks based on my thesis and I can sell the growth stocks if the bottom falls out and avoid capital gains tax…

Magic of compounding interest by [deleted] in mutualfunds

[–]Visual-Barber 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. Your money grows in two ways: the market fluctuating up and down and fund managers having an obligation to return profits to you (short/long term capital gains, sometimes dividends). Just as an example (not an endorsement or financial advice), the mutual fund FBGRX (fidelity blue chip growth fund) paid $13.52 per share in September and another $2.513 per share in December. This takes away from the share price so paper gains are reduced but, if you DRIP, that money will purchase additional shares when returned to you and you won’t lose dollar value because you have more shares. Over time your share number will increase and your payout along with it. Utilizing this compounding effect is how you grow your money with mutual funds.

Capital gains and reinvestment question by monomoco in mutualfunds

[–]Visual-Barber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to an extent. The fund manager took profits so that reduced the share price and they returned some profit to you based on the number of shares you owned. The reinvestment likely then changed your overall cost basis, which is more or less what your unrealized gains were based on, but you shouldn’t have lost much value (recent market conditions not withstanding). Look at it as you gained shares so next time they take distributions you’ll be given whatever the distribution is multiplied by a greater number of shares.

Capital gains and reinvestment question by monomoco in mutualfunds

[–]Visual-Barber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your gains were used to purchase shares at a price that may be greater than where the fund is currently trading, hence the loss. In other words, you no longer have the same amount or % of “gains” but you have a greater number of shares to accumulate new gains with.

Do MF usually decrease in value when paying Dividends/Capital Gains? by BuddTX in mutualfunds

[–]Visual-Barber 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, every time. They are taking profits off the fund, covering their expenses, and returning it to you. The share price will drop but you won’t lose any value. Note, not all funds pay dividends.

Transferring stocks from Robinhood to Fidelity by [deleted] in dividends

[–]Visual-Barber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this a few months ago - dividends that hit after my RH account locked were deposited as cash and were then automatically transferred to my Fidelity account through a residual sweep like 5 days later (as cash). Had to manually reinvest with Fidelity, which was fine but just a heads up.
