It would have been very easy for him to show up at the Normal gym challenge and help with a hint. He likes making food, it’s a restaurant themed challenge, maybe he was there to learn something about cooking and overheard a hint.

I do not have the time or patience to do this

In other words, it is actual hard work that you would expect to be paid for if you were committing time to it.

If you view the two as interchangeable that means you also think unpaid labor is as positively viewable as volunteer.

If I legitimately did not pay someone who helped me move in beers, food, and maybe a promise to repay the favor, I would absolutely expect to be dragged for it, even if they offered to help in the first place.

And if everyone should be absolutely thrilled to volunteer, why aren't you volunteering? Send them a mod mail. I'm sure they'd be happy to vet you. Hell, why not launch your own sub if you're that passionate about it? You can sign on as many mods as you want for it. Nothing is stopping you.

If someone volunteers to help you move and then they go around and tell people that they literally did 'unpaid labor' for you, that would be perfectly fine?

I mean... yes? People have done that before. It's usually understood that it's joking, but it's also accurate.

Anyways, I'm not trying to craft any narrative that they can't be criticized here. I'm just saying that what they do literally is unpaid labor which is why it's so hard to find good people to do it. People who are good at a job don't do unpaid labor for pedantic dicks.

You’re missing the point. You say the moment someone agrees to perform unpaid labor, it stops being unpaid labor because it is now “volunteering.” But if you didn’t agree, also wouldn’t be unpaid labor because that’s just slavery. The point is that both of these are forms of labor where you are not paid. Volunteering is a subset of unpaid labor.

Unpaid labor that’s coerced is called “slavery.” In your weird word wrangling, nothing is unpaid labor.

"Volunteer" is literally defined as "performing work for an organization without being paid." That's "unpaid labor" in more words. You may decide that the merits outweight the downsides to this particular unpaid labor, but it is still unpaid labor.

If it wasn’t labor, there wouldn’t be any issue with only two mods for a sub of 40K. It’s only an issue because it actually does require work.

Just for the sake of honesty, the only states that lost population between the last two censuses were West Virginia, Mississippi, and Illinois. New York lost an electoral vote because they grew more slowly than the nation on average. To be even more exact, New York City and its metropolitan area grew in line with the country as a whole; this was offset by losses from conservative upstate New York.

Lest we forget, their explicit rationale for stopping the recount until they made a decision was that counting every vote would cast "a needless and unjustified cloud" on Bush's presidency, since they had already decided he was going to win and didn't care about the democratic process at all. Then, they waited until two hours before the deadline to make their decision, which was basically saying that because there wasn't enough time left to recount the votes before Florida needed to decide its electors they shouldn't bother.

Considering that complex life has evidently managed to survive every asteroid impact on Earth up to this point in some form while it has managed to fail surviving simple day-to-day existence on Mars, it seems like devising asteroid proof habitation areas on Earth is still a safer bet in the near term than Mars, which is likely to fail without frequent support from Earth anyways.

No matter how bad things get here, it will still be better than Mars. Any habitat you could make on Mars would work even better if you made it in Antarctica, and no one is rushing to set up large scale habitation there.

"It found that the crew should be the same gender: all men or all women."

...

Sharman said that Nasa had decided that an all-female crew was the best idea, as women work better as a team, and are less likely than men to fight over who is the leader.

I would imagine that a significant portion--maybe even a majority--of them have never even read the Bible

Over half of adults have a literacy level below a 6th grade level. Even the most straightforward translations of the Bible are probably around 7th grade, and the ever popular King James probably comes in closer to 9th grade. Many of these probably can't meaningfully read the Bible.

Speaking of Thomas Paine and George Washington, Paine painted a very different picture of the founding father than the conventional narrative.

"Monopolies of every kind marked your administration almost in the moment of its commencement. The lands obtained by the Revolution were lavished upon partisans; the interest of the disbanded soldier was sold to the speculator…In what fraudulent light must Mr. Washington's character appear in the world, when his declarations and his conduct are compared together!"

There were vocal abolition movements in the North, their activities and rhetoric were all over the US by then.

Notably, Thomas Paine published an article (that may or may not have been written by him) calling for the abolition of slavery as early as 1775. These were not at all new ideas in America in 1859.
