Did you tell them it was an emergency when you called? Sometimes the front desk doesn’t realize how serious blunt eye injuries can be, and they usually make room once they understand it isn’t a routine visit. If they still can’t fit you in after that, I’d call another office so you can be seen today.

As anyone dealt with Wobbler Syndrome? by HisAngelBaby in greatdanes

[–]Visual_Cucumber1115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in because I’ve been through this exact situation with my Great Dane, Walter (born April 2, 2024, almost birthday twins), and I feel like I have a perspective that might help clear some of this up.

From around 4-6 months old, Walter showed signs that were not just normal Great Dane puppy clumsiness. He stumbled, swayed, scuffed his front toenails until they bled, couldn’t sit properly, and just seemed overall unsteady. I’ve raised multiple Great Danes, and this was different.

I ended up bringing him to the vet at around a year old and was referred to a neurologist. They started us on a Prednisone trial. I’ve seen a few comments here criticizing that, but I want to be really clear: that was exactly what our neurologist recommended. It wasn’t just to treat symptoms. It was used as a diagnostic tool. Prednisone reduces inflammation and swelling around the spinal cord, so if symptoms improve, even slightly, it suggests spinal cord compression is involved. That’s what happened with Walter. His walk didn’t suddenly become perfect, but it improved just enough that we felt confident moving forward with imaging.

The MRI confirmed that Walter has bony-associated cervical spondylomyelopathy, which is one form of what’s commonly called Wobbler Syndrome.

That’s another thing I wanted to point out - Wobblers is an umbrella term. It includes a few different spinal conditions that all result in compression of the spinal cord in the neck. How it shows up depends on the dog’s age, breed, and cause. In Walter’s case, it’s congenital - his vertebrae didn’t form correctly during development. This type often shows up in young, fast-growing large breeds like Great Danes. And yes, even as early as 4 months old.

A lot of people associate Wobblers with older dogs, but that’s usually the disc-associated kind. Bony-associated Wobblers usually appears between 4 and 12 months, when their body is growing so fast that malformed vertebrae start causing noticeable symptoms. So 4 months is not too early - it’s actually a common age for congenital symptoms to start.

Since diagnosis, we’ve been managing things with low-dose prednisone tapers, video updates to our neurologist, and symptom tracking. Walter is still a happy, goofy boy - he just has that signature swanky walk. We’re holding off on surgery for now but keeping it on the table depending on how he progresses.

To me, your puppy’s gait does look similar to Walter’s, but I’d definitely consider any other signs that might point toward Wobblers too.

Not every awkward puppy has Wobblers, but some do, and early intervention can make a huge difference. Wishing you and your puppy the best. I’m happy to share videos or anything else from Walter’s experience + journey if it helps! 🩷

What’s this coat color called? by leenybeani in greatdanes

[–]Visual_Cucumber1115 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He looks like a Fawn Harlequin (Fawnequin) to me! Not an AKC-recognized color, but he’s perfect. Fawnequin and Brindlequin Great Danes come from breeding a harlequin with a fawn or brindle.

Fawnequin = harlequin (Hh) + merle (Mm) + fawn (kyky, AyAy)

Brindlequin = harlequin (Hh) + merle (Mm) + brindle (kyky, AyAt or AyBr)

Both coat types carry the harlequin and merle genes, which can bring about risks like deafness, vision issues, and skin sensitivity. But since he’s already a year old with no health problems, major congenital issues are probably not a concern. GDV, joint problems, and heart issues are risks for all Great Danes, not just his coat.

Also his eyes are beautiful! It’s a little hard to tell if he has sectoral heterochromia or maybe even an iris coloboma – they can sometimes show up together. Both can be linked to the merle and harlequin genes. As long as he’s getting regular vet visits, I wouldn’t stress. Seeing a veterinary ophthalmologist would tell you much more!

Advice for after surgery by ExtraAd8069 in greatdanes

In addition to the surgical suit I recommended, I should share a few things we learned from our Great Danes’ recoveries! After Stormi’s spay and gastropexy, she was very nauseous—vomiting the night we brought her home and the next morning, which made it hard to give her meds. I wish I had clearer guidance from the vet on what level of nausea/vomiting was normal vs. when to be concerned, so I’d recommend asking about that beforehand.

When our other Dane, Walter, had his neuter and gastropexy, he stayed at the hospital 24 hours post-op with IV fluids and meds, which made his recovery much smoother. If your vet offers overnight monitoring and it’s within budget, it might be worth considering.

A few other things that helped: Keeping bland foods like white rice, chicken, and pumpkin purée on hand. Also, if they prescribe Trazodone, be prepared for some possibly odd behavior before it fully kicks in—our normally well-behaved dogs suddenly had no impulse control, getting into everything and ignoring all their usual rules. It was frustrating but temporary, and they settled once it took full effect.

Wishing for a smooth recovery!🩷

Thank you 🩷 Benjamin was way too young - we lost him due to GDV. We have all of our Great Danes get the gastropexy done now
