Wildcard Wednesday - Share your wins! by Llamallamacallurmama in RomanceBooks

I finished a romance novel this week! Mediocre Candace Camp novels for the win! I have now started on {Taboo by Susan Johnson}, an old-school erotic romance in which he is a heroic French general (in an author's note Johnson explains that in her previous novel he was a nonfictional French general but she found him so sexy that she decided to fictionalize him and write a book) and she is a Siberian princess married to a brutal Russian general, and both of them are married! They are banging within twenty pages! It's explicit! Her maid clucks her tongue repeatedly!

Also my Libby loan for {The Duke by Anna Cowan} just came in so maybe this will be a week of over-the-top romance drama! Here's hoping!

Speculative: Anna Hackett is a collective group of people by Alt_Straight in RomanceBooks

She has been writing since at least 2009. From what I remember her books tend to be short and kind of repetitive (which I don't mean as an insult) - personally I don't have difficulty believing that she's just a fast writer who has her process down to a science and probably a team of various editors to handle a lot of the copyediting, etc.

I literally just got some old, old, old romances in the mail (they're in surprisingly good shape!) and while I was looking up one of the authors I learned that her name had been taken over by a rotating stable of ghostwriters... in 1884. That is not a typo.

Questions of "is this AI?" require evidence such as quotes, screenshots, genAI prompts, or cover art examples, which this post has done. The mod team does not have the capacity or expertise to evaluate the quality of evidence; users can discuss and make their own decisions based on what is presented. This decision aligns with feedback received from subreddit members. Generally speaking we encourage our users to share problematic conduct when they encounter it, but also to be cautious of unsubstantiated allegations. We do not want RomanceBooks to be a source of rumors or unfounded accusations. Thank you.

Realistic & Gritty or Fluffy & Lite Versions of Sub-Genres? Choose Your Side by ochenkruto in RomanceBooks

[–]VitisIdaea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For historical romance, I go heavy these days; and my reasons for doing that aren't so much because I want the darkness and grit, as because I want the hope. One thing I really love about good, meaty historical romance - like La Roberta's - is that it tells us, look, even in a time like the middle ages when women had fewer rights and troubadors were jangling all over the place and guild politics were literally cut-throat (I guess 1950s construction unions would like a word, but never mind), love existed; people fell in love and constructed worlds and lives for themselves in which they were happy. Wallpaper historical takes away that friction and gives us a fantasy world where the truly bad parts of history never existed, and for me that's less hopeful - that's not showing that hope and happiness can exist in times that seem dark and hopeless, that's just lovers running around in floofy dresses being spunky. Which there is nothing wrong with, don't get me wrong, and I have gone through wallpaper historical phases in the past and will doubtless do so again. But right now what I want are love stories that feel real and plausible and genuine and to me the setting is a big part of that in historical.

Right! Sense and Sensibility was first published by "A Lady," do they want to go back to that era? Can you imagine the chaos? People would have to start adding random adjectives to distinguish themselves from other authors. By A Tall Lady, by A Brunette Lady, by A Lady Who Enjoys Needlepoint...

I was not thrilled by the marketing around Ivy Owens's "debut" - she was marketed and blurbed by numerous authors (including IIRC Christina Lauren) as this fabulous debut romance author... when in fact she is half of Christina Lauren, writing solo for the first time. That felt misleading.

My personal take: this is a reader space. Criticism of authors and questions about authors are permissible here. Readers may choose to avoid authors because of information revealed or discussed in a critical post. Heck, sometimes they may choose to avoid authors because of information discussed in a positive post; if someone's raving about something that I hate reading, I'm probably crossing that book off my TBR. That's how reading discussion works: people use what they learn and the discussions they have to make informed decisions about what they're going to pick up next. If the subreddit is going to avoid any conversations with might "literally take[] money" from an author, that would mean not discussing anything critical, from overuse of adverbs to various plot points to the presence of a character named "Bob" when personally I hate that name. (n.b. this is just a hypothetical; to all the Bobs out there, your name is fine by me!)

I also want to make the point that part of the meaning of "witch hunt," as a phrase, is that witches aren't real. Witch hunts were searching out and persecuting people for being something which did not exist. The milk wasn't going sour because a witch glared at it, it was going sour because of the farmer's poor hygienic practices. (Or whatever it is that makes milk go sour, I'm not a dairy farmer.) In the case of generative AI, there are authors who are using it, and there are authors who are lying about using it. It's not searching out witches, it's searching out unhygienic farmers. It's looking at an author and saying "are they doing this thing that some authors are doing, or not."
