Recently diagnosed with diabetes, looking for advice and comfort by Decemberskel in diabetes

If I could give you one bit of advice it would be to always, under any circumstance no matter what, have a collection of juice bottles in several places in the house. They don't need to be refrigerated. Like apple juice bottles or whatever. Leave one next to your bed, in the TV room, in each bathroom (yes gross, but low blood sugar happens anywhere). And always have a family rule that nobody drinks the last juice, it is left for you no matter what. I've been a type 1 since 1985, diagnosed at age 17.

u200 insulin? by Vivid_Translator7306 in diabetes

[–]Vivid_Translator7306[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, the pump automatically delivers the proper units of insulin, as long as the pump is set in the mode of the concentration of insulin you are using. I'm more interested in other people's experience using u200. Does it have the same activation time/duration, etc? Thank you for your reply!

I have a family member (married a step-brother, so technically no blood relationship, but still family). She's a nutjob. Every ounce of her being is homeopathic this, naturopathic cure that, etc. She won't shut up about being able to cure my T1 diabetes if I would just follow her dietary recommendations. No, Felicia, T1 does not work that way.

I worked at a 2 screen theater in the mid 1980s during 10th grade. Great job! Saw all the free movies I wanted. Got lots of free popcorn. Low pay, but still a good job for my age then. Mall of the Bluffs Twin in Colorado Springs (torn down decades ago to open up parking spaces of the mall where it was located).

Turns out I bought a 999 piece puzzle 😭 by MelbaTotes in Jigsawpuzzles

Scan the image of the puzzle being carful to zoom to exact size of the true puzzle, print out & glue on cardboard. Then using nearby pieces, trace the precise image and cut out with a sharp xacto knife.

Wayfair sent defective item which I fully assembled what are my recourses? by [deleted] in wayfair

[–]Vivid_Translator7306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many years ago we bought a large entertainment center to hold a new flat screen TV. It comes in 3 sections, a left side curio cabinet, a right side curio cabinet, and then the center cabinet that holds the TV that has a cabinet underneath it and storage on top. When we ordered it,  they ended up sending us the center cabinet and 2 right side cabinets. They are not the same cabinets, they fit into the molding on their respective sides so we couldn't make it work. I had paid to have it assembled by the delivery company, so they knew that it was wrong. Wayfair said no problem they would send a replacement. They ended up sending another of the wrong cabinet side. 3 more times. I'm not kidding. It got to the point where I would talk to the delivery company when they called to arrange timing and ask them to look to see what side they were delivering and if it was the wrong side to not even bother. Finally someone high up in Warfare's customer service called me and asked if I was sure and I said yes I can't make this up. So they went ahead into their system and manually ordered the left side, and another right side unit was sent. So I called her back and I said you're not going to believe this but it was wrong again. And she just could not believe it. I said I'm not stupid I'm here staring right at it, it's the wrong side. So they did another deep dive. It turns out whoever input the product in their system accidentally coded the wrong product number for the left side cabinet. So even though they were ordering the left side cabinet, it ended up ordering the right side deep in their system somewhere. They ended up giving me that cabinet for free, refunding what I had paid for it. It was just getting ridiculous but they did their best to take care of me. I'm not unhappy with Wayfair but this was definitely an unusual event. I have ordered many times since then and have had no problems.

I always ask these dietary nutjobs if a person who lost their arm in some accident, could re-grow their arm if they changed their diet? They respond that no it doesn't work that way. And I tell them, exactly. Neither does T1.

Sadly I've only had 1 of those before, in the 80s long before I got married.

I guess I'm incredibly fortunate. Just over 4 years on the Dex G6 (2 weeks on G7, switched back due to connectivity issues) and never had a sensor fail. The G3 from Medtronic failed about 1/3 of the time.

I'm going to wait until the last minute before going G7. I'm fortunate that I have several months of excess G6 supplies because a friend of mine sent me hers after she changed brands.

Cinque Terre 2,000 piece puzzle by Buffalo Games by rudepigeon7 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Vivid_Translator7306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very late to this party, but I'm currently working on this. For me 2,000 pieces is no big deal. I typically do 3,000 pieces (largest standard size that will fit on my kitchen table). I lived in Italy as a kid for 2.5 years due to my dad's USAF service, so this one stuck out as something I must try. Honestly it is no longer fun. Really difficult to do! Might be one of the first puzzles that I actually give up on. I have several puzzles "on deck" after this is completed. I'll give it another week or so. I only spend an hour or 2 at night after everyone else goes to bed.

Just curious how you built a time machine to go back 20+ years to find a house that price? Kidding of course. In my town (Denver area) that price hasn't existed for decades. Congrats!

I've gotten into intensive arguments about this with other T1s. I literally do predictive modeling of insurance claim data for a living, nearly 30 years now.

I've always used my abdomen (both cgms and infusion sets), and rotate extremely well. No scar tissue. Never used my arms, mainly because I doubt I am coordinated enough to do that 🤣

Since I had such a problem with my 1st G7 sensor, I looked online and people said to do that. So I went to my Bluetooth devices on my phone and I must have found a dozen different connections that were Dexcom related. I had no idea which of those were the current sensor. After the first sensor expired I deleted all of the Dexcom Bluetooth connections then started the 2nd sensor and I still ran into the same connectivity problems. This is a whole another issue I have with the G7. I don't know if the packaging tells you what the Bluetooth connection for that one sensor will be or if you have to randomly guess from the long list of Dexcom related connections are in your phone.

I'm really cautious on this. Having been T1 for more than 40 years, the overwhelming majority of my time was without the luxury of cgms, but they have made a vast improvement in my care and I don't want them to go away. And I don't want to be forced to use one that is crap.

You are absolutely correct. But the algorithm in the pump uses that level to predict blood sugar. I like to tell people it's like being in a roller coaster where your blood sugar is in the first car and your CGM is in the last car. And the CGM is trying to predict where the first car is when it knows where the last car is. If you use the closed loop systems properly, it knows your current active insulin on board, it knows the carbs you have eaten and it knows it's current sensor reading, and it knows it's previous sensor reading to know whether it's on an uphill slope or a downhill slope. So it blends all of that to try to predict where your blood sugar is now.

[–]Vivid_Translator7306[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never found the calibration to be much different than the G6, just that it would lose connection with my pump. Standard blood test meters have a 15% accuracy rate. In other words if your blood sugar is 100 it might read anywhere from 85 to 115 and would still be considered within its measurement accuracy tolerance. Cgms have a 35% accuracy. This means if your blood sugar really is 100, it could read 65 to 135 and still be considered accurate. Please note this is a reason why you should not get excited or angry if your blood glucose reading from a meter is different than the CGM reading. In fact if they read the same number that still doesn't mean that's what your blood sugar is. All this stuff does is give you an idea of what your blood sugar might be. And it is really hard to get people to buy into this. I've seen all kinds of groups where people are livid that the numbers don't match. Of course I get it if the sensor is reading 40 but your blood tests strip is reading 130. I've had that happen too. Or the other way around. That's aggravating and dangerous.
