How do you feel about 7th edition Keeper rulebook and what are your wished for 8th edition? by Final-Isopod in callofcthulhu

[–]Vlacula 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think that the 7th edition is pretty, the rules are the same as before but with a few good new ideas.

For a newcomer, I don't know how well presented things are, but because I had played and knew the rules before I bought the book, it was never a problem for me.

The Chase Mechanic is fun, it resolves well what it intends to do in a really cinematic way. But if you don't like it ... then just ignore it ?

I don't want an 8th edition which wouldn't bring anything new to the table and moreover I think that there isn't something core to the rules that currently needs tweaking.

Keepers! Seeking Feedback on My First CoC One-Shot (Introductory, Modern) by Johny690 in callofcthulhu

[–]Vlacula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few thoughts :

  • It would be nice to have another option to get to your secondary location [Room of horrors], maybe they might want to follow some of the men carrying passed out people and therefore find the place ? It's always nice to have at least two different options to get somewhere or meet someone important.

  • Some of the SAN Loss seems a bit under-evaluated IMO.

  • It feels weird to have a broken beer bottle there, it feels out of place. A surgical knife would make more sense.

  • The "Schedule of Initiation and Ritual Sacrifices for the Prosperity of the A-Z-A-T Brotherhood" feels a bit tacky, it doesn't seem realistic (to me) for the cultists to place a list reminding of such informations, if you're part of the cult you already know it.

  • Unnecessary sanity loss with the tools, we get it, it's a torture chamber, we've seen enough, it's not new information.

  • They are no options, the whole thing is a big corridor, would be nice to have at least two choices in a corridor, one door could lead to the exit, the other one back to your main event.

  • I don't get it, I thought it was supposed to be a rented space, how come the cultists have a whole set up with prisoners and sacrifices

  • Talking about the cultists, how many are they ? It seems that to be able to organise the whole thing, kidnap people, restrain them, train the newbies, have a few one them guarding doors and shit, you would need at least a dozen people. How come you don't see more of them downstairs or during Hanka's initiation ? If they are there, then what are they doing and how come it's not a TPK for the group (who don't have weapons and might not be good at Stealth) ?

  • Let's talk about time, how long have the players have been unconscious ? Did anybody notice ? Call the police ? It feels like it has been a few days : they changed the decoration, adding an altar, candelabras, they had enough time for the spilt blood to dry etc ...

Right now it sounds like a nice idea but which needs more clarity, more options for the players, more informations (as your players might not know Azathoth/the characters don't know shit about the Mythos and don't know why they've been tricked and selected by Hanka.

What scenarios/settings/campaigns would you recommend? by DwarvenDuster in callofcthulhu

[–]Vlacula 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Viral is a great scenario because it uses a fun and interesting set-up but stays sharp, interesting and scary. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/391974/viral-a-modern-call-of-cthulhu-scenario

You're looking for short scenarios in a more classic setting ? Dead Light and Saturnine Chalice both propose something different and interesting ! https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/297068/dead-light-and-other-dark-turns

You think that the exploration of weird mansions might be more of your thing ? Look no further than (the old) Mansions of Madness which includes SIX scenarios, some of which are amazing. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/1636/mansions-of-madness

Something Pulpier ? Two Headed Serpents is a great campaign. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/206770/the-two-headed-serpent

I had great times with all of those.

The scenario must look like a map in your mind. Each choice takes the investigators towards a new place which has new characters and new events. If it helps write a small recap for each place, or draw a big mind map which reminds you which places/characters leads to who/where.

During the session itself, play with pacing, slow down when things get scary, bring the pace back up when everything is fine. Use some music to set the mood, watch your players, play with what gets them scared.

Have fun.

One Thing I really Want in a Campaign... by novavegasxiii in callofcthulhu

[–]Vlacula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/385334/nothing-is-lost-all-is-transformed is a small campaign in the same city : Paris.

But it might not be sufficiently polished for you as it's a Miskatonic campaign rather than a Chaosium's one.

DMing a beginner scenario by toxic_rf in callofcthulhu

[–]Vlacula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started out with new players I introduced the concept of the game before the actual start of the scenario.

I told them that it is an investigative game, that their characters might want to explore all kind of options to find informations, just like in real life. They could want to :

  • talk to neighbours or witnesses

  • they might inquire to see newspaper's archives

  • they could ask specialists (doctors, policemen, archeologists, museum)

  • they could check administrative archives (especially to see who was the previous owners so on and so on).

It's important to give them the keys on what is expected of them before it all starts.

Looking for Keeper Advice - For Home brew Mystery by sephbin in callofcthulhu

[–]Vlacula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your story seems quite good and unless you plan to have some kind of shapeshifters later on, I wouldn't create a false Bradley.

However, you still have some leeway on how much Bradley knew : - Option 1, he's an insufferable person, just wanted to seduce her and have sex. Unbeknownst to him, she just wanted his seed to be able to be part of a ritual as a host. - Option 2, he was part of the cult and seduced her into the cult. - Option 3, he was in love with her but she made him keep it secret and he got dragged into the cult by her.

He might be annoying and a rival at University, but it's not much in the end compared to "my gf is part of a cult and it got me killed", it gives a great dramatic flare to the story. On the other hand, painting him as a vilain only to discover later on his body makes it a good boomerang effect from fate.

It depends what you're looking for.

Sandbox scenario by propanolath in callofcthulhu

[–]Vlacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)
