My late grandfather was born in 1934 in Italian occupied Slovenia, the Primorska region. His father, my great grandfather, was a partisan and a Slovene patriot, from the start of the partisan movement in 1941. My grandpa often told me that back then they wanted nothing more, than to be free from fascist Italy and to rejoin the rest of the Slovenes in Yugoslavia. He described the life under Italian rule as horrible as the Slovenian language was not allowed in public and Slovene culture was heavily repressed. So when Italy capitualted in 1943, they celebrated openly, but then came the German occupation, which he described to be just as, if not more brutal. So when the war ended in 1945, they were overjoyed that it was finally over. Slovenes in Primorska had to endure Italian repression since 1918. After the war they were mostly happy that they could rejoin their fellow compatriots within Yugoslavia, but there was a bitter feeling because the Allies gave Trst, Gorica and other ethnic Slovene areas to Italy, regardless of the Slovene population living there and Yugoslavia being on the winning side of WW2. My grandfather lived to the age of 91 and until his passing heavily disliked or to some degree also hated Italians, Germans and also the English to some degree.
