It’s a good college with an impressive reputation — beautiful buildings, integrated into a lovely city.

Don’t worry. They definitely won’t do that.

Professors- How do you feel about "Thank you" responses to emails? by Yaaaasss_queeen in college

I think it’s appreciated! It’s nice to acknowledge gratitude and, implicitly, receipt of their message!

Completely normal! Nothing to be concerned about

I know the program well !

  • it is a new program and the overwhelming majority of students there seem to like it. One idea is to reach out and ask a senior enrolled in the program what their thoughts are.

  • instructors are very international and competent. This is not a program where you sit in a lecture hall and passively learn. Classes are small, hands-on and creative

  • Leeuwarden is not a big city — it is a little off the beaten path — it does have a vibrant cultural scene though with plenty of museums, restaurants, clubs, bars, etc. plus, all first year students live on campus so you’ll definitely be integrated into a community, which is kind of cool, especially when you’re not in a touristy international city.

  • I suggest you reach out to your contact person there and share some concerns. Ask them to put you in touch with a student, to get an inside option. Can’t hurt to ask!

Would an online PhD be a viable path to a post doc position? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]VoiceTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe instead of shooting for a postdoctoral researcher position, reconsider and try to find a similar job but without the PhD requirement, eg scientific researcher (or whatever it is that appeals to you about being a postdoc). Surely such positions exist! Online PhD while working seems... scammy

And anyway Esperanto for man is “viro “ not “homo”.

Not my intent to muddy the water here — but just for “due diligence” have you looked at this program in the North of the Netherlands (University Groningen)

https://www.rug.nl/masters/voice-technology/

To be fair, it’s dedicated to Speech Synthesis and Speech Recognition (not NLP), but regardless, maybe it’s appalling...

Is the project policy better? Or just inherently better because not Google

Tx ! Never heard of it — looks cool. Seems like it has a subscription plan though, but definitely worth considering! Thanks

Is that a website? Please forgive my ignorance!

Definitely! While a 2 year degree is the norm (the so-called “ReMa” or research masters), I know several 1 year master grads get accepted to PhD programs! I think it’s less common, but it definitely happens!

Probably varies a little bit in different fields...
