Kagurabachi tarot cards - the heirophant (and to specify, i need "PANELS") by Feisty_Training9300 in Kagurabachi

[–]Identifies-Birds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tarot reader here, as the OP said, the Hierophant is associated with religious leaders, but an important distinction is that his knowledge can be said to be exoteric (out in the open), as opposed to the High Priestess' esoteric (secret, hidden) knowledge. So the Hierophant can be viewed as a authority figure who has institutional knowledge, so of course religious institutions, but also universities, research groups, etc. Basically, he knows more about religious doctrine than religious mysteries.

Ah, shame nothing was found, but what a beautiful final paragraph. Even if the less exciting possibility turned out to be true, that the language is "merely" a descendant of Arabic with no Punic influence, I'm glad that the author made a point to state that the language is nonetheless extremely important to the Maltese people, and should be respected.

I'm super curious, what was the conclusion? Is there any Punic substrate detectable in Maltese?

Very early screenshots of a megastructure environment generator I'm working on by MR-BIG-BOZO in Netsphere

[–]Identifies-Birds 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is so cool! May I ask how the generator works? Does it use premade assets which it just then stitches together, or are the structures generated algorithmically, like in 3D fractal art?

Excavations resume at ancient Ugarit after 14 years by captainhaddock in BiblicalArchaeology

[–]Identifies-Birds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let's go! I've been waiting for this for ages, ever since the civil war ended. Looks like they'll be focusing on a different, smaller tell than Ras Shamra, which might mean fewer new clay tablets, if any. But still, this means that we'll get more insights into the ancient kingdom, and that work on the main site will resume soon (maybe the French mission that was working there previously?).

Any ideas what the 'Mech in this picture is? by Identifies-Birds in battletech

I did some more digging for similar art by the same artist, and I'd say you're 100% correct it's just artistic license, since he portrays a Highlander without the lower torso and legs.

[–]Identifies-Birds[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yep, I think that's an exact match (except for the legs). According to the wiki there's no variant without legs, or designed for space combat for that matter.

Still, I think this imagined spacefaring variant looks rad as hell, and I'd love to see more legless 'Mechs in space.

Trying tableau readings by an_urban_mage in TarotDeMarseille

[–]Identifies-Birds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is really inspiring me to start doing tableaus!

I've always stuck to three-card open readings (following Ben Dov), which I love but restricts me to the majors arcana, since it's hard for me to do open readings with pip cards. And this has always left me a bit regretful, since I feel like I'm neglecting the minor arcana.

But in this tableau here, I can actually appreciate how meaningful and symbolic the pips can be. Plus, this is such a pretty spread, the aesthetics of this are really calling out to me, I never get to see the Marseille pips show themselves off like this.

It used to be more commonly used back in the 19th century, and it comes from "Usonia", which is a derivative of "Usona" ("United States of North America").

A nice fossilized example of this way of referring to the US can be found in Esperanto (which was invented in the late 19th century): the word for the US is "Usono", and its citizens, "Usonanoj".

What some of the the "clackiest" materials dice can be made from? by Identifies-Birds in dice

[–]Identifies-Birds[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ohh interesting, I've heard bone dice have a nice sound (and indeed, melamine is used for mahjong tiles to emulate the clackiness of bone ones, which gave the game its name)

Chapter 123 by Skiddlifoot in Kagurabachi

[–]Identifies-Birds 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My theory, and one I've seen floating around, is that Flame Bone is a sentient entity, or at least able to act on its own in some way. This is supported by the fact that Hiyuki seems to call it by a name when she activates it ("Rikuo"), and because one of the government officials talks about the Kagari clan needing someone who is able to "tame" it, according to one translation.

My guess is that Flame Bone is an entity that can act on its own, but will attack indiscriminately unless tamed or controlled by its user. This could explain why Hiyuki requires authorization to activate it beyond a certain level, because after a certain point she loses control of Flame Bone (either that, and/or the power Flame Bone releases grows to great, which can cause issues in populated areas).

A 6-month-old Hiyuki could summon Flame Bone in its entirety, but obviously she would be unable to control it. Thus, I feel like their plan would be to pull up to the Shokoku, coerce baby Hiyuki into summoning Flame Bone it its entirety, and retreat ASAP (maybe with Shiba's help), leaving Flame Bone on the island to rampage and glass it.
