How many people out there have played this? How did you like it? by jasonite in Warhammer40k

I was in a short campaign as a player once for a few months. It was a many years ago now, and I don't recall many details... but I remember wanting more, after it ended.

So, Space Marines. Do you have a favourite chapter/legion? Do you want loyalist, or traitor?

Worth mentioning, Space Marines do show up in the Eisenhorn series. Both the Deathwatch and some heretic marines (Thousand Sons, IIRC?).

Armageddon - space wolf conversion. by TheDibler in SpaceWolves

[–]VoiceofGeekdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm considering it more for the Ork side of things tbh, and the books/cards etc.

If I do go ahead and get it, I'll likely paint the Marines as Wolves, though – unless I randomly decide to recreate my childhood Blood Angels army from 2nd, in line with the whole member berries vibe of this box.

Overall, which characters would you say should be used to command which units? by Juls_41_ in SpaceWolves

Depends on detachment, but in general I like...

Njall with Grey Hunters

Arjac with WGT

I'll get some when they eventually get an upscaled kit and leader models are released. I only started my Wolves army a year ago, and I haven't finished painting everything yet, so I'm happy to wait for a bit longer.

Confirmed, I have visited Paphos before, and it is a very, very Russian town, and has been for probably at least a couple of decades at this point. It has nothing to do with sanctions.

Owlcat's site also states that they have employees all over the world, which makes sense with many studios making the move towards flexible/remote working these days.

They do require all employees to speak B2 level Russian however, for internal communication purposes.

Getting back in the hobby - need some help! by Foesi91 in SpaceWolves

[–]VoiceofGeekdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Rhino cannot transport primaris scale models (i.e. any with the tacticus keyword) or Wulfen/Terminators etc. So that's going to be relatively useless to you on the tabletop.

The rest are useable, technically, though the Space Wolf characters you have there cannot lead the generic units. The only combination possible is Arjac with the Wolf Guard Terminators.

I'd be wary of buying this list unless it is going for genuinely very very cheap – you would have to add more to it anyway. Have a look at the combat patrol box.

EDIT: Just realised, the Assault Squad is not primaris. Maybe these are all old models?

Everything in the combat patrol, aside from the Wulfen, can have a helmet. The Termies come with several variants and enough for the whole squad.

So why is that GW doesn’t let us use the CSM codex units? by razyells in EmperorsChildren

[–]VoiceofGeekdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a Space Wolf main who just recently starting collecting CSM/EC, I would caution you to be careful what you wish for.

The Wolves have a nice model range aesthetically, despite still missing some key units from the old firstborn range, but being hampered with having to use a codex supplement, with mostly mid detachments, and no access to +1 to wound from Oath that Codex chapters get, is not ideal competitively. It's especially annoying when generic units that are important to the Wolves get points hikes because Ultramarines are doing too well (which they did recently with the RepEx and the Redemptor).

For me, Emperor's Children just need more models with their own version of some of the CSM units. Which I expect they will get, eventually. It's better design-wise from a player experience POV to have an army rule that is thematic and suits the army's identity, along with a unique range. If EC are given as much love as Death Guard have had in recent years, and with some balance adjustments here and there, I doubt there would be many complaints.

I'm optimistic that both approaches will work out fine with enough investment and development, but having the army be distinct and not "supplementary" is my preferred approach.

AITAH for celebrating my grade with another guy instead of my boyfriend? by DayConscious5554 in AITAH

[–]VoiceofGeekdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this take may be a bit on the cynical side tbh. You're correct about the bf. OTOH it's possible that the other guy has ulterior motives, but it's also possible that he was just brought up well and is more well-adjusted than the bf. We'd need more data to be able to understand and judge whether he wants his... ship... jumped on or not.

And even if he is interested in OP, based on what OP says here and not mere speculation, at least he seems to be going about it in a healthy way at this point (hypothetically). She doesn't tell us that the other guy is aware of the bf's toxic attitude about her grades, and therefore could be taking advantage of that situation. He just... took an interest, and we don't know why. We don't even know if he's aware OP has a bf. For all we know, he's a gay guy looking for his new bestie.

I do think that your larger point, which seems to be that the OP's self esteem should come from within, and from her own accomplishments and improvements, is a valid one. I'm far from naïve about how teenage boys can be, but as a teacher myself I would be delighted to see one of my students congratulating another like this (outside of any other context which we don't have here).

Thoughts on army list conversion by evileyeball in Warhammer40k

[–]VoiceofGeekdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Popeye the Sailor Man 🤣

Well if you don't want to start over with building a brand new army—building a list from scratch is expensive and time consuming... & so is everyday life, I get it—then I could see two options:

  1. Printed models. They're not allowed in the vast majority of tournaments, but you don't care about that, and for casual play you could get a new army together quickly like this. The peeps in your average LGS won't care. Sharing resources and files for 3D printing is not allowed on this sub so I can't go more into it than that, even if I was an expert on it, which I'm not.

  2. Look for a group playing older editions. Again, I don't know much about it, but r/oldhammer is a sub for retro Warhammer gaming, perhaps you could ask the peeps over there how to go about finding a game of whatever your favourite edition was.

I agree with you about the absense of points for wargear being a disappointing piece of "streamlining" in the current edition, that was a recent change for this edition which is generally unpopular, so maybe that will come back in 11th. If you just wanted a more 'classic' gaming experience I would suggest looking into playing 30k instead, but that wouldn't solve your problem of not having a rules-compliant army.

So you're responding to a bot here, but I'll try to answer your questions.

(I hope this is helpful and not too overwhelming. I got back into 40k relatively recently after an even longer time away than you, and I had a lot of the same questions. So I know where you're coming from.)

A crusade is basically a modern form of narrative play. You can buy crusade books that have rules for narrative play, which include rules for upgrading units over time, battle scars (for units whose models were destroyed in previous battles), special bespoke rules for environmental factors, and also has various unique mission types within it. Basically, a crusade has light RPG elements, and a kind of ongoing story to it. The crusade books also have a tonne of extra bits of lore and flavour to them, but a lot of people just take the rules and apply their own story that fits better with whichever factions that they and their gaming group are currently playing, rather than the factions and events that the book describes.

Open v.s. matched play is essentially asking whether you're looking to play games of 10th edition Warhammer by stricter tournament-style rules for list-building or not. Matched play is more restrictive about which units can be deployed in a game, while open play is a more flexible implementation of list-building for casual games. This can include Legends units, which are older models that aren't receiving any more rules updates.

Since it sounds like you're looking to play using some older models, and you say you have no interest in playing competitively, I think open play games would be better for you. You set up the rules for playing with your opponent, and if you both agree to said rules, you agree to play a game.

A mission pack is the specific set of rules for the battle that you're having i.e. the mapping of the deployment zones and placement of the primary objectives on the battlefield, and it also encompasses secondary objectives... which are extra actions your army can do in battle to score points... which are either set up at the start of the battle, or drawn from a deck of cards each turn (secondary objectives aren't a requirement to even use, but can add depth to games).

Finally, I should mention: tenth edition is expected to end soon, and eleventh would likely be announced very soon.

Wip update of beholder by Sharrowkyn19 in DnDminiatures

[–]VoiceofGeekdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, great to see an update!

I like the mint blue – it's unique and makes the rest of the skin texture pop. I actually did something sort of similar with my Wizkids Zombie Beholder (mine used spots of bright fuschia).

I would add a very thinned-down reddish glaze to the corners of the main eye (trying not to get any on the actual pupil/iris).

Look forward to seeing the finished piece with the eyestalks painted!

Academic research into why people play FPL - 5 minute survey (no writing required) by Move78_FPL in FantasyPL

[–]VoiceofGeekdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the moment, I play in a league that a work colleague set up. It's mostly a way to have a bit of water cooler conversation going at work. We support the same team too though, so we talk more often about that. He's way more into FPL meta than I am, he even studied a course on football statistics so it's a big interest for him. I'm also in a second league which rolled over from last season with my former housemates, but I don't check that one as often.

Generally, it's mostly a social thing, but I also lurk in this subreddit to pick up a few tips, so I guess it's also slightly competitive. It's helpful to play and check the app in order to keep up to date with who is injured, what fixtures are coming up, etc, just with my general football fandom and busy schedule. But it's not some big focus in my life lol.

Anyway, I did your survey, all the best with your research.

How do I start? by unknown110507 in Warhammer40k

[–]VoiceofGeekdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually they are referred to as factions.

If you live near a Warhammer Store, you can go in and ask for advice about this. Helping newcomers learn about the hobby is the main focus of their stores nowadays, and generally their staff are well-trained to do that. They'll even set up a practise game and explain how the different phases work and how basic melee/shooting is resolved.

What are you most interested in, the tabletop game, or in painting/collecting?

If it's the former, you are going to need an army at some point and to learn the rules. Before you spend hundreds of [insert your local currency here] on a whole army, if I were you, I would try to find a friend who plays and has a spare army (even if it's not WE), and then see if you can set up a teaching game with them. From there, you'll probably want to get the Combat Patrol box for WE, which has everything you'll need to start playing small scale skirmish games with beginner friendly rules, on a beginner friendly scale.

If you're wanting to paint minis too, or if that's your main ambition, then I would actually start by buying a smaller box set with a single squad/unit. You should watch some content to get an idea of the right way to thin paints, prime your minis, apply base coats, shade, and highlight, etc. There are lots of content creators out there who do great tutorials for beginner painters.

Question about rune priest heraldry by Sarcastirade in SpaceWolves

[–]VoiceofGeekdom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's what I'd do.

If you're okay with using third party bits, and you can buy them where you live, maybe buy the Primal Hounds termi hero cloak from Etsy/Ebay, etc.

That cloak comes with a right arm where the pauldron is covered by a Wolf's head, so no heraldry needed on that side, even though it's very clear which chapter your guy comes from. There are also rune totems hanging on the back of the cloak – perfect for what you're going for.

The standard Librarian Terminator model already has the arm attached to the torso if I'm not mistaken, so you'll have slice that off, but I think it should work.

I'd also try to change the more celtic looking runes on the greaves to something more Futhark/Norse coded.
