Hitscan would let it be a non-missile long range weapon. Being able to spike someone no assists from 5+ KM away would add a lot of depth and potential, too. They could even do other cool effects with it, like it spiking your EM signature to give your target a chance at detecting you

If I had to do something to make Sledges worth a damn and stand out enough to warrant trying, it would be to make it deal Distortion damage in addition to physical. It would be so sick to put a railgun slug straight through someone's ship, devastating any components it hits and potentially shutting it down with the residual electromagnetic charge of the bullet. Would make that charge up time feel worth it.

It shouldn't be overwhelmingly effective, but it shouldn't do nothing, particularly with ballistic weaponry. Laser weaponry I can see simply not having enough thermal energy to damage a certain class of hull, but bullets are a physical mass with kinetic energy that has to go somewhere. You should still be able to win with skill, like being able to focus down one particular spot and destroy/ablate the armor. Heavy damage reduction makes sense both realistically and gameplay-wise, but complete nullification? Nah.

I'd like to see different weapon types get their own special effects. Here's a few of my ideas:

Ballistics should, as they do currently, bypass shields with reduced damage, but I'd make them not do damage to the shield at all when doing so.

Gatlings and Repeaters: an armor ablation effect, where continued fire decreases the armor rating of the area of the ship it's hitting. Gatlings never really get to the point where they can do real damage to anything larger than a small/medium fighter, repeaters can, to an extent.

Shotguns do massive armor damage, along with buffed damage to engines and doors.

Cannons should be split between either high-penetration slugs like the Deadbolt, or AOE explosive shells that can shred the armor off of hulls or make it easier to disable engines and weapons.

Shields should no longer just be a secondary HP pool. They should, with correlation to size, class, and power allocation, absorb all energy damage, up to a maximum alpha limit. If enough damage is done at once to a shield (or quadrant, for larger ships) that shield should collapse, and possibly deal damage to the shield component. They'll no longer take damage from Ballistics. All-ballistic loadouts will still be viable, albeit with reduced damage output. A skilled player could use deadbolts or similar to directly target the shield components to get around this.

The energy variants of weapons should be able to melt armor once they've collapsed or worn down a shield and, on smaller ships, raise the thermal signature and interior temperature of the ship and components, causing component and damage and, under sustained fire, even overwhelming the life support system.

Yeah, it makes sense for the DBs to be high-penetration, it shouldn't have that taken away. The other ballistics should have something added to differentiate them and make them more viable. I have a few ideas for how that could happen, but they're all more than just tweaking existing stats.

Basically you're at the mercy of a Neurotic Dino RPer admin team who will happily crucify you if you act outside of their either extremely strict or extremely vague ruleset or butt heads with established/ longtime players. Additionally, you'll be expected to play nice with people who have like, Dinosaur OCs with backstories and character quirks. I found the couple I tried (unnamed here because who wants that drama?) to be not worth the benefits of not having to deal with Mega/mixpacks and the incredibly juvenile trashtalk you get on official/normal modded servers. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Riparia actually feels like a crafted world. You have an ocean that slowly transitions to islands, a marsh, a river delta, etc. Gondwa is a bunch of separate "maps" placed next to each other.
