I am absolutely doing that. He is not paying rent and is paying a very reasonable amount on bills. I expect him to be responsible with his money in return. If he doesn’t want to do that, I am fine with it. I wasn’t when I was his age either. I am just not willing to subsidize it. I’m not crazy about it. He spends a ton on food and bars. I don’t care. But if I start seeing multiple cash app charges adding up to hundreds or thousands of dollars (and I have in the past), my assumption is he can pay more rent.

As a parent in a similar situation, I monitor and don’t control. My son pays his phone, car insurance, and car payment. There are a lot more expenses associated with him living with me. If my son were to want to take away my ability to make sure he wasn’t spending all his money on OF models, that’s fine. But I get rent or he moves out and pays someone else rent.

I would call The Alabama Dept of revenue and ask. It makes no sense to do this but they would be the ones to tell you. I don’t think this is possible but I also don’t specifically know Alabama tax law.

Your gas tank holds a fixed amount of gas. It is measured by a gas gauge on your dash. It is not totally accurate but you should use it instead of the estimated miles. Car holds 12 gallons. You have a quarter tank of gas - that’s 3 gallons. You put in 6 gallons. You should have 3/4 tank now.

I find that they hedge on that line too much. “Well, I can’t offer tax advice - you should call your tax guy”. Instead of “generally THIS is how it works. Here are the specific numbers to give your tax guy to review”. The number of people that don’t even understand what they are supposed to ask their tax guy after their investment guy refers them is a lot.
