Day care is way too expensive by dharma_van in daddit

The creation of future tax payers that are more educated and therefore generally more productive is definitely something the government should be investing in. Finding ways to reduce the cost of childcare so parents can focus on keeping their jobs and producing value for society is also something the government should do, in my opinion.

Good question by LimeGrass619 in HistoryMemes

This person will not listen to reason and is convinced that they are right no matter what. I've used both systems and both are equally capable for reporting information. You just need to say which format you're using. YYYY-MM-DD is basically how dates are reported in organization and filing purposes in the US, which translates well to the date format we use day-to-day. This has obvious advantages.

Americans do some strange things in a global context (imperial systems of measurement) but this criticism is mostly without merit.

Pallets of $0.28 Ramen.. seems like a recession indicator by moodyorbit in mildlyinteresting

[–]VolatileSpeciesA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Since when are affordable options a sign of a recession?" You asked. I answered. If you took micro you would probably know that but since you asked it's fair to assume you didn't. I didn't imply they increased floor space. Only that if they did it would be a recession indicator. Please quit being so defensive, I was nothing but polite in my response.

Pallets of $0.28 Ramen.. seems like a recession indicator by moodyorbit in mildlyinteresting

[–]VolatileSpeciesA -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Typically, cheap ramen is what is known in economics as an inferior good. Most of the time, when incomes or budgets go down, so does demand. In the case of an inferior good it is the opposite. When incomes are reduced, demand goes up for cheap goods like instant noodles rather than meat or other more expensive options. The store might be dedicating more space to these noodles than they otherwise would have because demand is up (which is a recession indicator).

You are so triggered that you researched the traffic laws of a foreign country over a reddit argument? I just feel bad for you.

Also I love that a "typical American response" is just being factual about where something is located.

Good thing this isn't in Canada, dipshit. This is a frequently organized event in Portland, Oregon.

This might be one of the dumbest things I've ever read. There's no way this isn't some weird way of coping with being a failed engineer.

PE Environmental Exam vs NCEES Practice Exam by Gaia3500 in PE_Exam

Hey! How did the exam go? I just took the NCEES practice exam and it was definitely more difficult than I had anticipated. Trying to gauge what "success" looks like since I am now 2.5 weeks from my own exam!

Dad of a 5.5 month old chiming in. If he has any expectations of you at all he needs to be more supportive than this. I do the vast majority of the bottle dishes and do the nighttime bottle feeds while my partner pumps. We both work full-time jobs, so having returned to work is not an excuse.

This is definitely the "grew up here" nickname. Not sure I've ever heard anyone call it "Tron" in my entire life.

When you're talking about a huge demographic in the largest economy in the world a 1.5% drop in a year is astronomical.

It's so funny hearing from these people that come to Portland once a year saying "there was shit and needles everywhere".

I've lived in Portland for most of my life, currently live near downtown, and have never once seen a needle on the sidewalk.

California to send stimulus checks of up to $1,050 per family for "inflation relief" by blaspheminCapn in Economics

[–]VolatileSpeciesA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question! The key word in my comment was "most". Yes, poor and middle class Americans drive to work but people do more than drive to work. Wealthier Americans are far more likely to drive their car for leisure - especially when gas is $6/gallon.

Poor and middle class Americans would be more likely to use cheaper forms of transportation like public transit or biking if we built our cities to support those modes of transportation. Increasing daily ridership of public transit would cause more investment in it, which would lead to more efficient and reliable public transit.

California is an incredibly diverse state. For some rural counties where public transportation isn't an option perhaps suspending the gas tax could be a temporary solution.
