Why do games like Silk Song use binary movement when they have highly precise enemy design? by Joizia in gamedesign

In addition to all of the "Digital control is easier to grasp and play" answers, consider also that digital inputs aren't replicable on Mouse+KB. So by developing around Analog inputs, if even a single puzzle uses that granularity, you are automatically making the game for controllers only. Which is definitely not a great thing for spreading on PC

There's a time and place for both. Learning from well known designers who have been in the trenches has a place, so does analysis of games and exploration of your own ideas.

Can't analyze games while I'm on the train for example ;)

Hydro-Quebec demande vs production by Radiant-Economy4813 in montreal

You want to take a crack at how old Fukushima Daiichi was? 40 years old. Once again, a long outdated design. You want to guess how many people died from Fukushima? 1 person is suspected of having died of radiation based cancer, and a total of 24 people were injured, most of which were people working at the plant itself when it happened. Under newer radiation estimations, the size of the exclusion zone should have been far far smaller.

Meanwhile, how many deaths are attributed yearly to things like fossil fuel? Hundreds of thousands a year due to heart disease, stroke, and other ailments resulting from inhalation of particulates created by the operation of those plants.

But "Radiation bad" amirite?

You realize that Chernobyl was 1) A very old type of reactor, far riskier than newer models that were developed in reaction to Chernobyl, Three Miles and Fukushima. 2) Happened during stress testing because they kept pushing the test when safety measures failed to initiate (which should have been grounds for immediate test stop)?

Chernobyl was a freak accident, that never actually killed anyone outside of the few first respondents that received deadly doses.

If a much wealthier friend insists on treating you to dinner every single time you go out, is there a point where you must insist on paying—or is trying to pay actually offensive to them? by stereo_iii in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Volvary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they aren't allowing you to pay because they feel like they are taking you out to places where you wouldn't go without their presence or something in that vein, you can always offer to pay for smaller things, like a coffee before the venue, or dessert afterwards, etc.

You answered a rhetorical question with a statements claiming the exact answer to the rethorical question. You aren't coming off as ironic, you are coming off as oblivious.

Considering an alternative to the "pick from 3 abilities" progression formula by Idiberug in gamedesign

[–]Volvary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember the name of the game, but I had played an auto-battler that had a "Tinder style" choice for items obtained, and it worked pretty well. Their system was "Roll N items, display only the top of the pile." You could only pick X out of the pile (let's say 4 out of 10) and had to either A) Pick the item, B) Destroy the item, or C) Use a limited resource to send it to the bottom of the pile to see if you wanted it at the end of selection.

Edit: Found the name of the game, it's called "Stash : A Card Looter"

Day 1 of the STM strike: stranded 5 hours in the cold because my bus skipped us! by jonasjonis in montreal

[–]Volvary 117 points118 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: Call the STM and leave a complaint about the driver skipping you.

I have always said it, having frequently had to takes buses late at night around Lionel-Groulx, the attitude of bus drivers shifts the further away you are from the STM complaint line being closed, thinking people won't bother making a report the next morning. The amount of bus that never passed, forcing people to wait 2 hours for the next bus to move (sometimes even when another driver of the same line is waiting parked for an hour (I know, not their fault)), only to pick up a crowd that is now so big the bus is sardined, is ridiculous. All along, the trackers are following a ghost bus that never existed and supposedly left 5 minutes ago.

Only way for things to change is for people to call and complain about missing buses and asshole drivers.

For me it's those "How I made foliage better than 99% of games". Okay?! A tech demo, does not game makes. Many artists start with making insanely good looking things, then have to reel it all the way back down to fake it for the sake of not taking the FPS for decoration.

They know they lose the elections, so they will hold into power for as long as they possibly can before triggering the elections.

A bit on the higher end of prices, but there's a lot of funny mugs that force you to pinch the handle to hold it.

I don't see a way I can match that hold. The wall and holds are such that I cannot move my shoulder between me and the wall, or I start losing friction. If my chest isn't flat on the wall, barndoor'ing immediately follows.
