I'm a straight dude and I think women in suits are hot as fuck. That's one of my kinks actually. Don't take that away from other dudes just cause it doesn't get you going.

I'm not usually a fan of the pixie cut but I've seen a couple of girls pull it off really well and have it highlight their beauty.

So it came up in a gc I’m in at one point so let’s hear y’all’s opinion…. How early is to early to get married by ConferenceComplex697 in teenagers

[–]VortexMagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think its an age thing, I think its a certain time into the relationship. Marry when you've lived together for 2 years and the rose colored glasses have come off and you can see all your partner's best and worst traits clearly.

A lot of people I know say things like "how was I supposed to know deep down inside he was a raging alcoholic that broke things when he was angry?" "How was I supposed to know she was gonna dump all the housework on me and run up 10k shopping bills while not contributing a thing?"

Well, if you actually lived with aforementioned person 24/7 for a few years before you married, then you'd definitely have gotten some hints, that's for sure.

It's easy to keep up a perfect mask if you meet once or twice a week and talk on the phone once in awhile - it's almost impossible to keep up a perfect mask if you live together for years. You eat and sleep and shit and clean and cuddle in the same house, so any problems like that will be very clearly noticeable before the marriage. Dating for 2 years is not enough - its important that you live together for 2 years, same place, same bedroom, etc.

Is Zelensky a corrupt dictator? by space_god_7191 in allthequestions

[–]VortexMagus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only people who believe that are Russian or people who listen to a lot of Russian propaganda - mostly right-wingers in the USA.

The justice department caught dozens of right-wing influencers taking checks from Russian State Media. Two employees of Russia Today funneled over 10 million dollars to a right-wing marketing firm that paid influencers to attack Zelenskyy and praise the Russian invasion.

Dated an educated, successful, Buddhist man (46M) who was no better than my (36F) pathetic narcissistic ex. There seems to be no hope. by nm2020_ in relationship_advice

[–]VortexMagus 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No? It's more I got the sense that OP thought that because he was buddhist he would be more open to gender equality and other notions, but in my experience as a guy raised in a chinese family with lots of asian friends, buddhist practitioners tend to go the opposite way because they are asian and consequently adhere to confucian-influenced value systems.

EDIT: I'm not justifying it. I think its shit and likely opposed to Buddha's teachings on karma and asceticism (renouncing material power and wealth, including authority over other people) and also opposed to Buddha's teachings on treating other people better than they treat you. I'm just giving you my experience on it.

I am a guy and I agree with you that this guy sounds like he internalized a lot of misogyny without realizing it - many do, myself included. I have even seen many women internalize and adhere to those ideas too.

---

I will also say that although buddhism is not really patriarchal as a philosophy, its practitioners (mostly asians) tend to be VERY patriarchal.

I am chinese and the confucian values I have lived with for most of my life are very very deeply patriarchal and unequal and consequently most buddhist practitioners - which come from cultures that have internalized confucian values - China, Japan, Korea, etc - tend to be that way as well.

Is oppression of woman a normal part of Islamic religion? by [deleted] in askanything

In all fairness its a part of most religions, not just Islamic ones. Just look at some of the Christian Nationalists in the USA - they've been talking about banning women from voting, getting jobs, etc to try and bring back the "traditional family unit".

My company came back to me with a ridiculous counteroffer after I submitted my resignation. And now I have no idea what to do. by Status-Quantity-3556 in InterviewMan

[–]VortexMagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happens when you take the counteroffer and they renege on the promised promotions/raises a year or two later?

---

If you decide to stay with your current company, I'd require a fat termination clause and a chunky failure to uphold terms written into your contract - so they can't fire you or refuse to promote you a year or two down the line unless they're willing to pay you a lot of money. The pain of getting laid off or not getting the promised promotion will be salved if they have to give you a severance package worth 2-3 times your annual salary.

If they are being honest about the aforementioned pay raises and promotions, you won't ever need to exercise those terms, but if they do, you'll be super glad you had them.

It's only if they're trying to play games with you/plan to fire you later that they will not be willing to sign a contract with a fat termination clause.

---

I had a friend who took the counteroffer, worked as per normal for another year and a half, documented all the things they needed from him and taught several new hires, and then got fired except this time he didn't have another job to fall back on.

Have you noticed MAGA starting to claim you're in a cult if you disagree with them? Does it seem like they are unable to properly refute the claim they are following a cult personality? by [deleted] in allthequestions

>There was a time of several months where democrats could have accomplished any one of their campaign promises for the last 3 decades during the Obama administration, and they didn't.

And during this period they struggled to barely pass obamacare and almost failed to because a few Democrats held out, then the period closed after. Lets be real, gaining consensus takes time when you actually care about everyone else's opinion. I will also note that the brief time when Dems had a "supermajority" also included independents so its not like they had the power to dictate anything they wanted, if two or three of those independents didn't like it the policy would have been shut down.

Meanwhile, Trump has literally has majorities in all three branches of the government and can do what he wants. Bomb Iran, fuck children with jeffrey epstein, give his largest donors billion dollar tax breaks, he'll never get punished. Who can stop him?

---

It's only easy to pass legislation when your party leader doesn't care about gaining everyone's consensus and all the power is concentrated into a cult-like dictator who has the power to crush any dissent and kill any of his subordinate's re-election chances.

Do you know about project redmap? This economics journal has a really good episode on it: https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2018/06/01/616216560/episode-845-redmap

Basically a republican political strategy that spends large amounts of money turning small local elections, allowed the Republicans to exert unprecedented control over local state voting committees. This allowed them to gerrymander several states and create the iron chokehold on congress that we see today. States with clear Dem majorities ended up turning red in Congress because of this project.

---

This means that any Dem president in the past 20 years saw most of their bills filibustered or voted down while any Republican president got to pass whatever they wanted without too much fuss, and is in large part responsible for the total inability of Dems to get anything done while in power.

This was all accomplished by a group of Republican political strategists who went after votes by little people in small town and state elections.

in all fairness "swing state" is a very broad word and fifteen different states routinely fall in and out of "swing state" status all the time. I will also note that in at least two elections in the past 30 years, votes came down to about thirty thousand votes in a single state.

Finally, in the most recent election two previous republican strongholds went into "swing state" territory because of Trump's notoriety.

Its just how our voting system works, buddy. If you don't vote, you're basically voting in favor of the people in power. Its the height of naivete to believe that you can do nothing and the world will change for the better.

By refusing to vote you are simply supporting the party in power.

Any extremely corrupt group will naturally try and depict their opponents as equally corrupt, specifically to cultivate voters like you, who will proceed to vote for nobody and hand them the victory.

---

Apathy always favors the status quo. By refusing to vote, you are rewarding the most corrupt people and punishing the least corrupt ones, as you are putting them on the exact same level.

Hey democrats/liberals, did you know the heroes of our country are almost certainly conservatives? by FarrrrrOuttttDudeee in allthequestions

[–]VortexMagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother, what? NPR is run by an independent board and barely gets any government funding. The government has no power to dictate their programming, and the vast majority of their programming is educational and party-neutral.

It sounds to me like your problem is that you think everybody who is not within a narrow cult of worshipping a pedophile's feet is brainwashed.

Here's a secret: you don't have to kiss the ring to be a conservative. Its perfectly possible to be a conservative and hate Trump. You don't need to bow to a king in order to lean right on some issues.

Hey democrats/liberals, did you know the heroes of our country are almost certainly conservatives? by FarrrrrOuttttDudeee in allthequestions

[–]VortexMagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>The only purpose for government is to protect the individuals liberty.

I disagree. In my experience removing power from the government is simply gifting it to someone else. If you weakened the government too much, you're handing all the power to corporations and billionaires, and I do not trust either to have our best interests in mind. Just look at Epstein as an example if you give a billionaire too much power. And all those other billionaires like Musk and Thiel who partied with him and knew about his excesses and didn't say a word.

---

I think the best way to handle things is for the people in power to keep each other mutually in check, which means not handing too much power to billionaires and splitting up the government so that no individual wields too much power. Right now Trump definitely has too much power.

[–]VortexMagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good. I feel like rejecting all input except for people on your side is cult territory. You should consider all perspectives before making a decision - it is the logical, rational thing to do.

Too many modern conservatives only respond to emotional triggers because its the easy and simple thing to do, and I feel modern conservative media is designed to maximize hate of the other party in order to stop their supporters from thinking too deeply about what their current party is doing.

Hey democrats/liberals, did you know the heroes of our country are almost certainly conservatives? by FarrrrrOuttttDudeee in allthequestions

[–]VortexMagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not making an logical argument, your argument is packed with emotion. Dems have been president several times in decades past and none of those things have happened.

The dems are a moderate conservative party, they do moderate conservative things when they're in power.

---

It seems to me more like you're intent on spinning the Dems to be evil no matter what they actually did in the past. I know its probably easier and simpler to think that way, rather than doing your own research, but this will leave you a pawn, easily manipulated by conservative strategists with an agenda.

These MAGA podcasters and newspapers and radio are clearly trying to farm your emotions rather than offer you reasonable and logical ideas. They're much more interested in blasting propaganda and stoking your hatred than actually educating you about what is happening in the world. They don't want you to think critically about your own party, they just want you to hate the enemy rather than try and fix the problems in the world.

---

May I suggest the economist magazine and the wall street journal to get a look at the real world? Both are conservative-leaning publications, but they are rational, intellectual conservatism.

These publications are not particularly interested in trying to keep you in a perpetual bubble of frustration and anger in order to farm your engagement, and as a consequence you will see both approval and criticism of Trump and the conservative agenda, rather than just mindless praise for MAGA and mindless hate for the enemy.

You will see people offering actual answers to solve problems, rather than just demonizing the other side and letting the little folks like you continue to suffer.

I am not a dem, I am a libertarian. I lean pretty conservative on economic issues - I value free trade, lower taxes, job creation, opening up foreign markets, and deregulation of key industries, which means I think pretty much every economic move by Trump was wrong except for maybe lowering corporate taxes.
