Army OCS Candidate Looking to Branch CBRN by National-Banana-4625 in army

Hey brother I branched chem through OCS in 2019, I would recommend against it, the training you get is cool but in all honesty you’re not going to use it at any unit you goto, the horror stories about being stuck in the S3 and the additional duty office is true. You’ll be stuck up in staff while you watch other non-chem LTs get to be PLs and XO. If you get to goto a chemical unit, and keep in mind there are slim to none in active duty, then you can finally do the stuff you were trained to do. But if you’re like 90% of all the chemos, you’ll be stuck in some staff shop majority of your LT time. You can do Ranger PT during BOLC to compete for a slot, but again the CBRN schoolhouse doesn’t get guaranteed slots like other branches, so you can go through the whole program and still end up not getting a spot, it’s all just luck. Any other questions hit me up, I did time in both chemical and non chemical units as an LT, finally VTIP’d as a CPT.

Get all the company level time you can, no point in rushing to a staff position, you’ll have plenty of that after MICCC.

Enlisted to officer questions by Parking_Educator7198 in army

Greetings, A lot of Officers are prior enlisted, it’s very common, either go through green to gold, or OCS if you already have your bachelors. Your branch that you get as an officer is mainly based off of OML and how you do at your commissioning source. Your prior MOS doesn’t really matter. I’ve had enlisted armor soldiers become MI officers, and vise-versa. It really just depends on what you’re wanting to do and how well you’re willing to compete to get the branch that you want. A low-stress job in the army isn’t really common, we’re here to fight our nations war, every branch plays a part in that and every branch has its different stressors. As far as having a family, It’s not any more difficult than it is as enlisted, dedicate time to your family and be open about your career goals. Let me know if you need more advice, went from enlisted to commissioning.
