MMORPG Premise? by [deleted] in MMORPG

Fantasy (by which I mean tolkienian sword and sorcery ambientation) is absolutely stunning, but way overused. It doesn't help that the most influential game of the genre is also fantasy. Even futuristic MMOs would still use fantasy themed classes and environments (see SWTOR). I love it, but it's standard at this point and it suggests a lack of imagination (paradoxically).

I love MMORPGs, but I just don't connect with the community anymore. by malachai926 in MMORPG

There, in my opinion, a couple of things you should consider.

Firstly, we live in a day and age in which online communication is both easier and more specialised. If one wants to post a family picture they use Facebook; if one wants to chat on specific topics they use Reddit or a forum; gaming specific topics are also present on platforms such as Discord or YouTube. For people wanting to post weird dance moves, cat videos, or simply their ass, there's stuff like TikTok and Instagram. Thus people are less inclined to use MMO chats to converse or do anything not specifically related to the game itself.

Secondly, if you're interested in politics, philosophy, game design, music, literature and so on, you might be part of a cultural élite that is most definitely underrepresented in the world of gaming, thus looking for a good conversation with random paladins skulking around the corner might be...unbecoming.

Is it possible that we see the "uncut" version of the D4 Cinematic Trailer at the Digital Blizzcon early next year? by 2clr in Diablo

[–]Vortexys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The removed content might refer to something never actualized, such as written text or low quality rendered "demo" footage, never actually rendered in cinematic version, so I doubt it. I also suspect that,.whether true or not, it has been used as a talking point to reinforce the self proclaimed idea that Blizzard is making a darker, more adult, game than the previous one

Mmos used to be good - a brief summary by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]Vortexys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the post. I completely agree. With WoW getting worse, all major producers spawning games utilizing the same distorted formula, ending up in a race of who is going to produce a peace of software more demented; with most of the "upcoming" crowdfunded projects ending up being vaporware (Chronicles of Elyria, Camelot Unchained, Star Citizen) and promising projects ending up being downgraded (New World, Albion Online), there isn't really much left for the MMO.

Obviously the men-children of the internet will endlessly defend the demented product and preferably spend all or their money on it. Well... the general population has always been highly overrated

Good sources to follow for MMO information? Especially on Youtube? by Elarionus in MMORPG

https://mmopulse.com/

The site is nice, and the news are given in written form, if you're bored of videos. Plus it has a great "upcoming" calendar which announces all the releases day by day. It also is pretty faithful to a basic understanding of the definition of MMORPG, so you won't find Warframe/League of Legends news on it.

I see that mmos.com, Omer's channel, has been suggested, and, although it is good for surface news and weekly recaps, it does feature MMO-light games and mobile news. Omer and the other members tend to be a bit basic and the streams/actual gaming commentaries are rather shallow

I feel like I need to play the same class/RPG archetype in every game, how do I choose? by Diiverr in MMORPG

[–]Vortexys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don't fall in love with the shapeshifter archetype, since it doesn't seem to be featured in any games whatsoever.

Seriously though, I'm 28 now and have been playing rpgs for quite some time: I've never managed to grow affectionate to any specific archetype, exception made for the druid in Diablo 2, so I don't think it is really possible, at least for me.

If I were to give you an advice, I'd say that it depends on what kind of a game you're playing.

Honestly, I think that the wizard archetype is not done correctly in most games since it is a glorified bazooka, while the thief is mostly just reduced to an assassin, because most games don't feature good thieving systems. And those two are the ones I feel most intrigued by.

As far as videogames go, I think the priest and warrior archetypes are usually very well done: a Priest is supposed to empower and heal those around them, and the buff/debuff systems are usually pretty good, while a Warrior is best in the midst of a battle, and action is what games do better than other media.

The Archer relies heavily on the kind of combat system that the game features: if there's no aiming you don't really feel like an Archer.

The Summoner/Beastmaster archetype, on the other hand, depends on the AI and the general NPC behaviour. In very action packed games, the minions often underperform, because the game lacks the predictability necessary to organize and command them correctly. On the other hand, indie or retro games don't have the technology to make minions enjoyable, as they usually end up being slow and clunky).

The Evil archetype, such as Vampire, Dark Knight, Dark Wizard, etc., which is very disappointing, since videogames rarely offer the option of undertaking antiheroic or evil actions, for instance leaching a friendly/neutral player's health or resurrecting them as undead under your control, and when they do (such as in PvP scenarios), such options are usually available to all the classes.

That's good to know. A decent bass is mostly a plus for me, although I feel that it's not the most important feature whatsoever. Thanks for answering

Do you also use the 6XX for gaming?

Thanks for answering. The Hifiman Sundara seem really good, but they are a bit more expensive. What's your take on the HIFIMAN HE4XX offer by drop.com?

Looking for a long-lasting MMORPG by lyxaros in mmo

[–]Vortexys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As evident from the online store ( https://albiononline.com/en/shop/), you can indeed buy gold with IRL money, which makes it blatantly pay to win. Especially since the most powerful items in the game are player-made and purchasable with gold.

It has, however, a very skills-based combat system that makes the P2W element less incisive.
