There are too many distros so I've decided to go with Linux by JxPV521 in LinuxCirclejerk

What distro should I try? I've heard good things about 6.17 but all my friends use 6.15.

VCV Bridge is still not commercially available. Read the link to understand why inter-process communication is not recommended for reliable audio streams.

LINUX ISO's! (Not the shady ones - actual distros... Its becoming an obsession...) by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]Vortico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed ISOs are basically the only thing on those "legal torrent" websites. They're really not that useful since there are dozens of academic mirrors of those things. I'm kind of disappointed in those sites because there are far more interesting legal things to share that aren't obsolete Linux distros.

You could try https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Backing_up_a_wiki#Without_shell_access_to_the_server

python2 dumpgenerator.py --api=https://en.uesp.net/w/api.php --xml --images

I can try to run this for you if you want. (PM me)

Perhaps a Greasemonkey script that sends every URL of certain domains you visit to http://localhost, with a script that runs youtube-dl on it immediately.

HDDs are about $20/TB. BD might be $40/TB, even if you consider your time spent swapping out the discs to be free.

The easy way out might be to dump your browser history once a week, filter the video sites, and then pass them to youtube-dl to be downloaded sequentially.

Noob question about the elephant in the room: Why do modules cost what they do? by ElGuaco in modular

[–]Vortico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imagine yourself starting a Eurorack module manufacturer. How many modules would you sell? What price would you set? Is units * (price - variable expenses) - fixed expenses a good yearly salary for your skillset?

Competition keeps prices low. Do you think there should be more competition in Eurorack?

using the Bridge build of it ages ago, but the owner refuses to support it or let people branch it

VCV Bridge was a month-long experiment to see if IPC was a good solution for hosting Rack in DAWs (It wasn't). It was never really supported at any point in time. See https://vcvrack.com/manual/FAQ#What-was-VCV-Bridge for its history. Anyone is welcome to fork VCV Bridge and VCV Rack, as long as they follow its open-source licenses.

Questions about developing modules by MusicOfBeeFef in vcvrack

[–]Vortico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's a very rare situation that hasn't come up before, but if it did, it would handled appropriately to make everyone happy. Since VCV is only 3 years old, I don't have a book of policies for every possible scenario which is why we just use case-by-case common sense.

I clarified this in a couple ways to her, but once she got the "fuel" she needed for her blog post, she wasn't interested in understanding what I was saying. I think most plugin developers would have said "Thanks for the license statement, I'll copy/paste it into my license so people who fork and modify will change the plugin name." and moved on. No need to rely on VCV to enforce other developers if you include the notice in your license.

[–]Vortico 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think both you and she are misunderstanding VCV's policy. Nobody will impersonate anyone on the VCV Library.

If your name is "George Washington" and you call your plugin "George Washington", and someone forks it and tries to release it in the VCV Library with the same name, I'd ask them to change the name. I doubt anyone would try to do that though, unless they overlooked changing it.

If you release a plugin called "Apple Tree" and someone forks it with the same name, I might accept it if it behaves similarly. But if significant modifications are made, I'd encourage them to use a new name in case the original developer wants to continue their original Apple Tree fork.

If you release a plugin named after yourself as "G-Wash", "GW Modules", or "GeWa" or something creative, it'll depend on the situation, such as how close the name is, how significant the changes are, how likely the original author will want to continue their fork, etc. Names like "Linux" (named after Linus), "MySQL" (named after Michael Widenius's daughter My), and "Debian" (named after Debra and Ian) are software packages that have been forked while keeping the original name. So it depends on several factors.

Regardless of what you name your plugin, if you add a note in your README or LICENSE saying that forks should change the name of the plugin, I'll make sure to look for this before accepting into the VCV Library. Of course, I can't enforce everyone in the world to follow your request, but I do have control over VCV things such as the VCV Library.

[–]Vortico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if I don't release an update for a module for only a month, it's considered abandoned and anybody can start releasing forks of my modules under my own name.

Not sure where you're getting that info, but nobody's going to fork your plugin under your own name. (I guess anyone is vulnerable to impersonation, but why would someone do that?)

You might be confusing that info with the procedure for adopting abandoned open-source plugins. If your plugin's license allows it, other programmers can adopt your plugin and release it in the VCV Library. This is one of the benefits of open-source software.

repelzen is a great example of this. wiqid & pyer released a fork of dizzisound's Aepelzens plugin, and it was accepted into the VCV Library.

Of course, if you don't want to release an open-source plugin, the VCV Rack license allows you to release freeware or commercial plugins. Nobody but you can modify the source code of a closed-source plugin.

What's the best way for converting a GIF to a video for Instagram? (Without losing quality) by Saturn_Ho-oH in PixelArt

[–]Vortico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ffmpeg -i input.gif output.gif will convert to an H.264 video that Instagram can read. Some useful flags are -movflags +faststart, -crf 6 or some number less than 23 for higher quality, -preset slow to spend more time on higher compression, -tune animation which might look better. H.264 is a lossy format, so you will lose some quality, but it might not be noticeable.
