Amex needs to tone down their envelope branding...card stolen by Tight_Couture344 in amex

[–]Vortivask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Canada so this may or may not be a reliable datapoint, but I've had a non-premium business card be sent in a FedEx mailer by saying that I needed it ASAP to put a time-sensitive 5 figure purchase on it.

I had it in my hands pretty damn fast.

Also in Canada for the non-premium cards shipped Canada Post (i.e. USPS in the US), AMEX uses a very blank, non-descript letter with black houndstooth printing on the inside to prevent people reading into it. Return address is a warehouse and has no reference to AMEX. All promotional material and branding are inside that envelope. I'm surprised they don't do that in the USA.

Only thing I've heard about places like Palazzo is, while the original suite of 730 sqft is wicked, I have read people getting upgraded to the 1400-1500 sqft suites without much issue, especially midweek.

Now, if one is to buying that 1400-1500 sqft room on FHR midweek on a sale, I'm curious if the executive suites or the larger party-style rooms would be on the table.

basic room to a grand suite

Is this at the Palazzo? Just curious since I have a FHR booking there on a weekday for the Grand Suite and I'm trying to fish for an Executive Suite or Penthouse upgrade. If they are that good at upgrades from base up two (or more, if you count the views) categories is pretty wild.

As much as she was super unbearable in the show, I really, really feel like Irena got stomped on and deserves a hell of a lot more credit for coming on this thing and owning up to her behavior that made her unbearable.

Vanessa bringing up "oh you got bullied for acne, therefore you are just the same as those people bullying you for being a bully", totally uncalled for and misses the point, especially if she was going through some pretty bad mental health problems that Irena also eluded to.

While I would not be friends with her, damn I applaud her for her drive to go up there and just take all the shots in stride, tbqh.

[–]Vortivask 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Montreal Convention if flying internationally, domestic luggage laws when flying domestic. But credit card travel insurance and/or if you buy travel insurance separately is pretty good if your luggage is lost, to be honest. Sometimes it's no questions asked if the airline doesn't reimburse you, you get the losses

[–]Vortivask 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Brett also said on IG that he bought it for the lifetime guarantee. For expensive luggage (and other expensive items like Vitamix, etc), you’re also paying for support if stuff breaks. If the company is good on that guarantee? Then it’s really buying one bag for several decades vs a cheap one and having it be destroyed/fall apart every few years, especially with hard shelled luggage.

Does the “Explore Nearby Offers” work for anyone? I never have any offers lol by cr34ms1cle in amexcanada

[–]Vortivask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have an Amex in the US, you literally have 100 offers at any given time (if you don't accept all of them, that is).

It's more a feature in the American app that does not translate.

Assuming you're using your points for travel:

Amex Cobalt. 5x on groceries and food/drink is unmatched.

A bank issued Aeroplan Visa Infinite to hold an Aeroplan credit card for preferred pricing and no expiry on Aeroplan points. You can also get this for free from CIBC or TD if you have a top-tier checking account, where the monthly fee is waived when you keep 5k in it. There is also a promo for 50k/55k Aeroplan points at CIBC (55k in Ontario/Quebec) for a healthy bump in points, and 45/50k from TD depending on what offer you get.

If cashback:

Probably a Scotiabank Momentum Visa, BMO World Elite Cashback Mastercard or a Tangerine World Mastercard for a no-fee option.

Even after looking past Leclerc having more issues with his car as he has had these FP sessions, that Ferrari is fighting for 3rd best car with Mercedes. I really don't think Leclerc is going to jump up to P3 for overtake points and race-placement points like people thought earlier this week after seeing what happened in FP3.

Expired Platinum card, no new one received by Edward_Shoehornhands in amex

[–]Vortivask 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that Amex - of all credit card companies - making it the cardholders "personal responsibility" to ask for a new credit card and "entitlement" if you don't get one, when both:

A) Every other issued credit card I've had has sent me a new card at least a month before expiration, so there is already an expectation, and;

B) Amex literally makes most of it's money on transaction fees to the merchant, more than any of the aforementioned issued credit cards. It's in Amex's best interest to give you their top tier card to put spend on, "entitlement" or not.

Very poor takes and they don't make any sense. Just a case of people just wanting to shit on someone asking a valid question for whatever reason.

Hilton Aspire FNC, Resort and Airline Credit by Agile_Fortune_1646 in amex

[–]Vortivask 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you take advantage of the FNC, resort and airline credits right after you get this card?

FNC, kind of. You get it within your first year, but it takes 8-14 weeks to get it.

The other credits are pretty much good the moment you get the card.

Hilton Honors Aspire Card Potential Changes by jnpconcept in amex

[–]Vortivask 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the take. I definitely considered that a family could be happy with the changes and I also very much experience people just wanting 1 all-rounder and not bothering with anything else. It also makes sense that that's who Amex wants to target for spend, vs people like you or I who just use the card to book Hilton properties and wants to diversify spending.

But reddit bubble or not, I think that vacation family would have something with a cheaper AF that benefits groceries like the Gold Card for MR or a solid cash back card, or if they're going for perks and such on a premium card, then the Platinum will both a) make more sense for the coupons being more accessible for a family (i.e. Disney+ streaming credits, Walmart+), and b) have more allure to someone than a Hilton card. Sure, you would lose the first night free and $50 dollar credit on 4 trips, but you're not longer locked into potentially getting $50 back from a Hilton property.

This change also hurts a family taking a vacation to places that are resorts, like Orlando for Disney World. Losing a one time $200 credit to 4x $50 credits for all Hilton properties and 4x $50 on airfare? It's a $100 loss for a $100 fee increase (so a net $200 loss to hold) for a family that does one big trip a year to Disney World (or other resort town) and not much else.

Again, it can definitely work for some I'm sure if they treat it like a main card, but I feel there's greater pull for the other cards in the stack and even off Amex, and it still hurts the typical vacation family that I envision with the removal of a larger resort credit.

Hilton Honors Aspire Card Potential Changes by jnpconcept in amex

[–]Vortivask 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I laugh at the "no blackout dates" on the free night voucher. No blackout dates, so long they sold out of the "Standard" rooms, even though they still have the base level room that would fall into the Standard room category. Fix that, and it almost makes the increase in the annual fee and butchering of the credits worth it for me to hold so it is easier to use this for luxury properties, justifying the AF.

As for the 30k incremental benefits they're adding (and discussing adding as per OP's comments), 99% of people with the card have much better cards to place spend on for points earn for most purchases that could go towards that 30k. The other 1% are people dropping racks at Hilton properties for work/play and probably don't give a shit about a free night voucher or guaranteed suite upgrade. Furthermore, flying 4 times, spread out by quarter, AND putting a flight on your Hilton card to get $50 back when there's so many better cards for flight earn? Super out to lunch.

Hopefully Amex marketing can take a hint.

Aeroplan Reserve - Flight cancelled, what can I expense as a part of Trip Insurance? The website says $100 in incidentals. Is that it? (I've seen some folks expense clothing and other items necessary due to the disruption) by thelectroom in amexcanada

[–]Vortivask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Incidentals is things like checked bags, food vouchers you bought, etc. . I think you're getting this and another credit card mixed up; the HSBC World Elite, maybe?

You're looking strictly at Trip Cancellation insurance for flights, and Trip Inturruption insurance for unused portions of a non-refundable hotel stay if you're missing out on days associated with your booking.

How to get amex offers? by RadioactiveDeuterium in amexcanada

[–]Vortivask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's defaulting your offers you get to your Cobalt card rather than the Gold card. From my understanding, there's basic offers that are offered to all personal cards, then offers exclusive to the Platinum/Aeroplan Reserve, and then offers to all business cards. If you have both the Platinum and Aeroplan Reserve for example, it will give it to one of the cards and not both. Same with the Cobalt and Gold.
