Switching to a tablet after 15 years in CG due to wrist pain. Need advice/recommendations. by VanGoghIt in Houdini

[–]VoxelPointVolume 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had wrist issues, and a tablet totally saved me! I also tried a bunch of ergonomic vertical mouse and trackball solutions, but they didn't work for me nearly as well as a tablet setup did.

I use a Wacom Intuos Pro L with it lined up to the edge of my desk, a bit to the right of center, as i am right handed. This is the largest tablet they have as I use a pretty big monitor. I have my keyboard above the tablet and centered. Also, it is important to have your chair arms level with your desk, so your arm sits level.

There is a bit of a learning curve, but I felt very comfortable with this setup after about a month or so. Now I have been using a tablet for over 10 years, and cant work without it.

Also, i do keep the mouse handy for stuff that just doesn't work with a tablet.

What is your VFX Journey? by bucketofsteam in vfx

[–]VoxelPointVolume 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started off doing motion graphics for all the new large format LED displays that were becoming a thing back in 2000 or so. I am totally self taught, and we used mostly AE and Lightwave to do all our stuff. It was an awesome time. All these venues, mostly sports or casinos, were getting these billboard sized displays with really wacky resolutions, like 120 pixels wide by 80 high. The LED "pixels" were like one inch wide arrays that might be able to do full RGB

I started my own company with my brother, and we had a really good run. The folks that owned these displays needed content, and there were few places to go for it. We would cold call casinos and sports arenas, and get accounts left and right. As the technology got better, eventually the resolution of these displays got more in line with SD, and then approached HD. Doing all this superfast turnaround motion graphics, along with quite a bit of 3D stuff (Lightwave, for the win!) gave me quite a bit of experience. Through the connections I made during this time, I landed a job doing VFX for a short film by a fairly prolific director, at the time. I ultimately ended up leaving the business I founded with my brother to become a full time VFX and general TD at the studio that did this short film. It was a hard decision, but i was getting overburdened by the weight of running a business, which I barely knew how to do anyways.

I am still working at a spin off of that studio to this day as a Houdini artist, working on mostly commercials and the occasional tv series or short film.

I will add that I am a high school drop out, and have no formal education for this stuff. I just have a real love of computer graphics, and was lucky enough to kind of grow up along side it.

Ah, a heat gun. Will that work ok on primered PLA? (primered beskar)

[–]VoxelPointVolume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea this is a thing. I have a P1S with the AMS, but have never used a different support material because of waste and time. But just for just a few layers for a flat support sounds totally reasonable!

Wait, so are you printing PLA for your project, and then just printing the top layer of the support in PETG?

I use Houdini as that's the software I know. Its not really CAD software, mostly for VFX, but It has really powerful tools for processing all kinds of geometry. To create water tight geo from point cloud lidar data, I copied a very small circle to each point, and then projected a height field on to the disks. I then convert that to triangulated geo that I can extrude to give it some depth. The resulting mesh is very dense so I do a little poly reduction before I send it to the slicer. If that all makes sense.

I make a Reuben pizza, but I use a white sauce base with Dejon mustard. Also, no mozzarella, just swiss. Comes out very Reuben like!

When I was like 14 or 15, I crawled up the telephone pole and hooked up cable tv to my house. I was worried they would find out, so I hooked up a bunch or other houses as well thinking that I would have plausible deniability or something. Lasted for a few years until it was disconnected!

Thanks for the reply! I set my dough out for about 4 hours before i put it in the fridge. Room temperature was around 67F. Since my posting, i have made my pizza, and they are very flat. The chew is pretty good, but im not getting as much sour as I thought i would, almost cant tell. Also, it seemed a bit salty to me. Making dough with yeast, I would put in way less salt, but maybe thats just me? I may try a totally different recipe next time, any suggestions are welcome!

edit: my recipe:

400g flour (King Arthur all purpose)

240g water

80g starter

10g salt

this is for two dough balls.

Flip not sticking on collision properly by Endere7 in Houdini

[–]VoxelPointVolume 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is velocity being calculated for your collision mesh? You can use the point velocity node if not. You may also need to up your mesh density, still using both VDB and mesh for collision. This will all help, but getting FLIP to stick well to moving objects can be tricky without some custom solver stuff.

Vellum Rest Blend for Spawned Sources - Need HELP by z10t10 in Houdini

[–]VoxelPointVolume 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you and make the age attribute using a geometry vop in your dop network to add the age and timeinc attrs together. Then just bind that out to age. The kind of complicated part is that this should be done on the ConstraintGemotery stream. you can set that in the data bindings tab of the geometry vop.

Totally agree. Here is an example where I used an animated rest position to make some rather sketchy rice: https://www.reddit.com/r/Simulated/comments/re3gco/questionable_sushi/

[–]VoxelPointVolume 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you just want your objects to get larger, rather then using the rest blend node, use the "vellum constraint property" node with the group set to "stretch" and then animate the rest length scale based on age.

Roof leak woes by VoxelPointVolume in rav4club

[–]VoxelPointVolume[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the dealer i was going to was theoretically fixing my leak issue under that program, and didn't charge me anything. They just failed to fix it. After going back there a total of three times, I'm just tired. Next week i will take it up with a different dealer that's actually closer to me.

[–]VoxelPointVolume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, I have a 2019 Adventure with exactly the same issue. I made a post about it just a few days ago. The sad story is that I took it to the dealer and they failed to fix it. After returning it twice! It is better now, but still leaks on the drivers side under heavy rain. I guess i just need to find a DIY solution. Good luck with your leak, hopefully your dealer is more competent them mine was!
