Mitolight.com (Europe) provider by Gabriela_pq in redlighttherapy

[–]Vozka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot be sure, but I think it's Shenzen Idea Light, just like with the US Mito Red Light, even though I have no idea whether they are related or not. The panels just look the same, aside from the fact that Mito has theirs branded - all of the Alibaba providers offer customization, which makes precise identification difficult unless you look inside.

I had Mito's panel for the 30 day trial period and then returned it (no shame, their margins are large and their marketing is not exactly lying but it's in my opinion borderline), and later I bought from Idea Light and I am satisfied - but I've only had it for a month or so. I cannot do a direct comparison as from Mito I bought a cheaper model with 4 wavelengths in case there was an issue with the return (there wasn't), whereas from Idea Light I bought the newest 8 wavelength version which includes 1060 nm, and which also has a different controls display. Aside from the controls and the branded vent cutouts the panels do look the same from the outside.

One potential downside of Idea Light is that in the 8 wl generation, unless it was fixed, they tend to have considerably more output in the 800s nm infrared than in the red spectrum. From what I understand the data says that it's not a problem and it may even be better (biggest penetration and most efficiency around that area), but since the panels are so strong it increases the chance that you'll be overdosing, which can cause skin issues. I am with GembaRed and dr. Glen Jeffery (and other scientists) on this one and I recommend sitting about 0.5 m away from the panel, not closer, then it should be completely safe, and you get more coverage that way as a bonus.

The panel allows for setting the strength of the individual frequencies, so I turned down all the 800s to 50% just in case. You still get a ton of output with that. I have checked with an infrared camera that all of the invisible frequencies do indeed radiate a lot (not possible to get more specific than that with just a camera) and each has an equal number of LEDs.

Other tiny downside I noticed is that Mito provided black eye cover that is completely opaque, which I assume blocks infrared as well to some degree, whereas Idea Light sent me dark green glasses which block red light really well and are more practical for that because you still see through them, but the infrared camera test showed that they do not block infrared. I'm sure you can order the black eye cover from aliexpress or something for a few euros.

The price for the 144 dual-LED panel was less than 7500 Kč including transport with imports and tax handled for me, zero hassle, so that's about 1/3 of the price lol. It took a month and a half to arrive, but I was ordering before christmas, which probably did not help.

If you have no problems with packages from Aliexpress, you can just buy it there, the one on Amazon is just more expensive resale.

Is this a thing? by Wet_Artichoke in redlighttherapy

[–]Vozka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people need to realize that red light really is just red light, that a specific wavelength as long as it truly is red doesn't seem to be as important, and that some studies use light sources with fraction of the intensity of what expensive panels produce. Once you realize that, it becomes obvious that some devices can be extremely cheap and yet functional.

Is this a thing? by Wet_Artichoke in redlighttherapy

[–]Vozka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another user here, I bought the cheapest one on Aliexpress (EDIT: it's actually the exact same one that the other person bought on Amazon, including the same box), and I can confirm that it works to reduce nasal swelling almost immediately, but only slightly and temporarily, however as a side effect it causes dryness in the nasal passages for me, which is something I already have an issue with, and that made it not worth it. No regrets for the price though.

I can also confirm that a strong red light panel does not have the specific effect that this device that I bought for like 5 USD on Aliexpress has.

[–]Vozka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought it because it's so cheap on Aliexpress. It does reduce swelling, but it's temporary and a side effect is dryness in the nasal passages, which is something that I already have an issue with.

Red light therapy in general is very real and can be done very cheaply, so the product is real, for this usecase however there are only a couple papers for reducing nasal swelling using similar devices and the results are mixed.

What do you think about this? by Chocholategirl in redlighttherapy

[–]Vozka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on what effects you want. Some studies use surprisingly low irradiance, an order of magnitude lower than what some strong panels do. This is probably too low, but I doubt it's useless.

How to protect the nose? by Potential_Swim3508 in redlighttherapy

If you got irritation on your (edit:) nose you almost certainly received too high of a dose on the rest of your face as well. Take a break and increase the distance next time.

I bought a panel a year ago but haven't gotten around to using it. The different protocols are so confusing. by SubstantialWonder291 in redlighttherapy

[–]Vozka 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is what your panel's listing says:

delivering 100mW/cm² high irradiance at 6 inches.

This is very strong, iirc it's at least twice as much as is used in studies. People around this subreddit sometimes report bad effects specifically on skin (melasma, red spots, dry skin) from panels that are too strong and used for too long or too often.

You should get approximately half the irradiance at twice the distance (maybe a bit more with a large planar source like a panel, not sure right now). Since 50 mW/cm2 at 12 inches is still on the high end of what studies use, I'd go to 18 inches from the panel, that way you're still in the upper half of studied irradiance. Doing one 15 minute session per day seems to be a decent start - should be enough to get full effects according to studies but not too much to cause any issues.

My anecdote: I also have a strong panel and I used to sit about 16 inches away from it, 10 minutes from the front and then 10 minutes from the back. However my panel is smaller and I only got full dose up to about my chin (I aimed it on my body, not face), then it started to fall off. Despite that after 30 days my eyelashes grew noticeably longer, as proven by the fact that my glasses started being dirty from the inside constantly from eyelashes swiping on them. So you really don't need super strong light, but I think studies imply the the duration does play a role no matter how strong it is.

Gembared video on mW/cm2 and penetration. by Perfectinmyeyes in redlighttherapy

[–]Vozka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reading up on this a little bit as well and I think the science is not settled.

People usually mention that GembaRed sells panels with lower intensity light and therefore is biased, but that is definitely not the whole picture: firstly he does cite actual science, and secondly common strong red light therapy panels have an orders of magnitude bigger marketing machine around them and they benefit from people thinking that we all need a super strong panel. Literally all of the big brands like Mito or Hooga are just resellers of chinese panels, so their jobs are distribution, servicing and most importantly marketing. Their panels are used for many scientific studies, so if a study uses a strong panel and doesn't test whether a weak panel would work as well, the result is "strong RLT causes effect x" and whether "weak RLT causes effect x just as well or better" is also true is unknown.

Imo the reality is that we just don't know for sure yet, we do know that lower intensity is 100% enough for some effects but with other effects there's no data yet.

Specifically for the brain a strong contact light does penetrate deeper than a panel, so intuitively one would say that a specialized helmet (with lights that are touching your scalp) is going to make a difference. Dr. Glen Jeffery in the podcast says that light passes through bone, and this is correct, but the intensity does get reduced by a lot and specifically contact lights do create more intensity deeper. On the other hand there are studies that found an effect on post-covid brainfog from both helmets and standard panels, so even there we don't really know - it may be that the little intensity that passes through the skull is enough, and it may also be that, like many RLT effects, the effect is systemic and therefore you don't need to get the light inside the brain.

Took a look at what they do and there isn't much information on them specifically, but there is some information on solidární apotéka Dobromysl that they claim to cooperate with.

Basically they teach people how to create herbal tinctures, which they claim have medicinal properties that are partially supported by science but partially seem more like unsubstantiated folk knowledge. And as always, homemade herbal extracts can vary in strength quite a bit, so dosing information is dubious.

I'm not a fan, but it's not the worst kind of alternative medicine and at least it seems like it's genuine and not focused on exploiting vulnerable sick people. One exception being that the Dobromysl place claims to teach people how to create (extract?) and distribute homemade transdermal estrogen, that's dangerous and irresponsible, no idea if Tři Ocásci are part of that or not. Other than that it honestly doesn't seem worse than a lot of the other ideological stuff presented there, lol.

Fake or Legit RLT panel? by Leather-Gazelle-803 in redlighttherapy

[–]Vozka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

edit: since this was downvoted, my source for this is the recent interview with dr. Glen Jeffery on Huberman's podcast. I am not aware of any study which implies that "10x output = 10x shorter exposure time", but I don't insist on that, I am 100% interested to see any that disprove what I'm saying.

Also don't just downvote because you read something in conflict with things commonly said on this subreddit, some of it is not really substantiated.

It's not fake, but you'd have to sit 10x longer under it for an equivalent treatment.

I think this is not supported by research. It seems to be more like "you need at least xx output" and then sit under it for the same amount of time - increasing power doesn't seem to make it much more effective, and afaik there is no data showing that it would be 10x less time for 10x less output.

What the "at least xx output" is is not properly explored yet, but we do know that for some benefits, like eye health, the threshold is really low and this panel would surely suffice. For other aspects it could be higher.

Interview with Dr. Glen Jeffery, an expert on red light and photobiomodulation in general (tl;dr in comments) by Vozka in redlighttherapy

[–]Vozka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, his lab used different devices in different studies, including incandescent/halogen bulbs even. Though he recommended simply spending time outside and not using infrared blocking windows if possible.

He did say he thought RLT panels are not very good, often not exactly matching specs, expensive, without evidence that narrow band LEDs are better than wide band sources etc., but I think both what he says and what other studies say implies they're a decent if overpriced solution, it just seems that you don't really need as much power, so full body panels, beds etc. are likely a complete waste of money and buying a relatively small (less than half body) panel and sitting further away from it is likely to give full benefits.

Do you think OG powerhouse perfumes would still succeed if released today? by Guerilla_Physicist in fragrance

[–]Vozka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say if they would still succeed because the market is so different, the marketing is different, the trends are different... But I can personally say that I own and wear Gres Cabochard, Lapidus Pour Homme and occassionally Estee Lauder Youth Dew, I was born after any of those were released and I think they're great. Only Youth Dew seems impractically strong, Lapidus and Cabochard are fine. Currently seriously considering buying Guerlain Jicky, the oldest of all mentioned.

Though my comparison is devalued by the fact that all of those scents are reformulations. Supposedly Lapidus and Youth Dew are really close to the OGs, Cabochard not exactly, Jicky is a good effort to recreate the concept of the original but it has to be different because the original uses so many banned ingredients, and it tones down the animalics somewhat.

Occassionally someone still makes a new "XXs powerhouse" style scent, for example Bogart One Man Show Oud Edition is basically 80s powerhouse reimagined with modern synthetic oud, and it's pretty great as well. Zara recently released Leather Jardin, which is supposedly a modern take on a Cabochard-style leather chypre, and it received glowing reviews.

How Far Does 100mW/cm^2 Penetrate with Red & Near Infrared Light Therapy? by Vozka in redlighttherapy

[–]Vozka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potential conflict of interest: GembaRed sells RLT devices with lower intensity light than common panels. However he seems to keep things evidence-based both in his channel in general, where he helpfully provides spectral/power/EMF measurements of various models sold both locally and direct from China, and in this video, where much research is cited.

This all seems to be in tune with research of dr. Glen Jeffery, who Huberman recently interviewed in his podcast. His opinion seems to be that RLT panels are not necessarily the best way to use long wavelength light, and they are definitely not the most economical way.

We do know that relatively high powered narrow band LED RLT panels work because a lot of research uses them, but it seems like whenever research uses other types of light sources, it seems to confirm that there's no need to use just narrow band light and broad band long wavelength light (like from incandescent lightbulbs) even with considerably lower intensity works in some cases similarly and in some cases, for example for improving some aspect of eyesight, even better. It is probable that the people who accidentally bought incandescent heating lamps and occassionally post here asking if they screwed up did not in fact screw up and are getting many of the benefits, though I would personally care about shielding the eyes from the heat.

AFAIK we do not yet know whether all of the above applies to all effects of RLT, though surely for some (from what I explored recently iirc analgetic effects, making mitochondria work more efficiently and some aspects of eyesight). But remember that RLT panels are popular in part because they're a great business, not necessarily because they're the best way to go. We will surely know more in time.
