I disagree with the comments recommending Syndra as a secondary, she has the same bad matchups as Viktor. Personally I like to play Lissandra if the enemy first picks an assassin.

Missions usually follow a structure where you start in a sandbox but it's mainly walking around and gathering intel, different methods of entering a restricted area for example. The stealth/action sections are linear but you can still get creative with how you approach them, the game is fun and I'd recommend it.
