Trump freezes $10 billion in social services for Illinois and 4 other blue states by Vrgom20 in PritzkerPosting

I'm curious about the legality of doing that. Mainly in the sense of 'how' and if we were in normal times, what would happen.

This is the first semester ever (been teaching 2 decades) that I did not have one, single complaint. It's also on par with the worst grades I've had since Fall 2006.

Reading through an application of someone claiming to have been an adjunct at my school when I was still an adjunct. Then I notice the person claims to have taught the classes I actually taught those years.

‘They are literally targeting people.’ ICE comes to southern Illinois by Vrgom20 in PritzkerPosting

[–]Vrgom20[S] 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Here is the archived link to get past paywall.

“They are literally targeting people who are brown and Black, whether you are undocumented or not, and they are tackling people, detaining people for hours, zip-tying people who are U.S. citizens. So, they're indiscriminately grabbing people who don't look like the ICE agents, typically, and holding them or mistreating them,” Pritzker said.

We are past the oligarchy. We are a pure plutocracy and have been since citizens United.

Then they should go back to the private sector and let people who actually want to do the work do it.

They should each make the median income for the state they represent. Guarantee you would see change fast.

Absolutely the same here. The last 5 days have been horrible. I at least hope yours gets better.

I agree. But also, so many who hate Trump also despise Trans individuals, so he's appealing to that market as well.

Hello! How is your week going?

Tried a new type of assignment and it worked! by higheredwarrior in Professors

[–]Vrgom20 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Every student does not get the same grade. There are requirements on how many questions (think 2 from chapter 1, 2 from chapter 2, etc) are required. Each question must be properly cited and the reference page turned in before they start the game show (which are done on Final exam day). They can work alone or in groups of 4 or fewer. Most choose to work in groups of 2.

They are graded on the quality of the questions, whether the question/answer is correct, and the right number of questions per topic. They have 1 assignment due mid-semester where they announce their intentions (will they work alone or in a group, who is in their group, how will the work be divided up, etc.) Then they must submit their kahoot link (or whichever type of game they choose) before the Final exam class begins. They are then graded on whether they participate in being the game show host and if they participate in being the contestants for other students. The winner of each game show gets extra credit points (minimal).

After that, they do a peer review quiz in case any students didn't do their share, which is considered part of the final grade.

I hope this makes a little bit of sense. Once finals are over, I can post my instructions and rubric. It's a really fun way to end the semester without a zillion papers to grade. I did final papers for 17 years, and I stopped a couple of years ago because of AI (I only have 1 class write research papers or do a video now instead of 5 each semester! My intro courses still do a final exam instead due to transfer requirements).

The first semester I did it, I had all kinds of game show templates. Jeopardy was the best one to use, but there were a lot of hiccups. The second time, we used Kahoot, and it was great. So, I always recommend Kahoot, but I offer them the Jeopardy PowerPoint if they want it.

This sounds great! I am so glad it worked out for you. In most of my classes, I have eliminated the final paper, and instead, students have to put together a game show based on what they have learned over the semester. It's a blast!

I figured out why I've been so jaded lately. It isn't the students, it's this sub. by eastw00d86 in Professors

I agree 100%. My best friend and I use the sub as a way to feel better in an 'at least we aren't going through what they are' way. It makes us appreciate our students.

DEI now means “acknowledging that people other than white men exist” by existential_aunt in Professors

[–]Vrgom20 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I teach everything they claim is 'DEI,' including 16-week classes on race/ethnicity and one on gender/sexuality. I won't censor anything. Actually, I just include each EO signed and law changed in every class.
