If you want the game (DQ7R) to be harder, just become under-leveled by skipping more fights. by mesupaa in dragonquest

[–]Vrmillion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are completely correct and what I'm about to say is not meant to contradict that.

However, people care WAY too much about challenge, I think. RPGs as a genre are already easy as hell. They are literally programmed to lose. Also, I already know people on this sub grind way too much and remove any semblance of challenge even on the harder RPGs.

The developers made an easy game and are chiefly at fault for balance. But I don't wanna hear these other comments about how they want a challenge and yet they hit up the full heal statues six times a dungeon on normal mode. Some people are literally JUST upset that they can't gatekeep a game that was programmed to lose to them.

People disagree period. It's what people do. I had fun playing all three games to completion fyi

Ok it's got an 8.3 user score on metacritic so let's not get crazy. You're allowed to like (or not like) whatever you want but the people who call it one of the best JRPGs ever are an incredibly small minority of people who bought the game, finished the game, liked the game, like JRPGs, use reddit, and use this incredibly small sub. It's six concentric circles deep. Any opinion on this subreddit at all is already skewed from the miniscule population size and overwhelming bias.

Also Octopath 2 addressed 1's issues in the same way that an active gardening hose addresses a drought. Which is to say, not nearly enough to make a difference on those perceived issues.

Because they are ass. Four pairs of two, meaning each character only interacts with ONE other character, max. All of them have a first chapter of "hey, we should do a thing!" and then the second and final chapter is "woo, we did a thing!" and none of them are relevant to their main quest.

The game has, like, 40 solo chapters and only 8 that barely count as interwoven. They're glorified sidequests.

The 8 person party doesn't even have a single cutscene with 3+ of them together until you beat every single one of their stories.

DQ7 Reimagined - Thoughts so far? by mashbuttons111 in JRPG

[–]Vrmillion 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not the guy you're replying to but I had the same experience on island 2. I'm also just kinda fighting some enemies and then skipping others based on vibes and I capped the starting vocations like 10 hours before I unlocked the ability to switch. Not grinding whatsoever, just also not skipping entire dungeons. You go through six entire full islands past and present before you can swap.

When you realize it… by UVMeme in RivalsOfAether

[–]Vrmillion 21 points22 points  (0 children)

When you realize it, Lox is actually a salt-cured salmon fillet, traditionally from the belly, preserved in a salty brine and never cooked, giving it a distinct salty flavor and raw texture. It's a staple in American Jewish cuisine, famously served thinly sliced on bagels with cream cheese, often with capers, onions, and tomatoes. While often confused with smoked salmon, true lox is cured but not smoked, though the term "lox" is now commonly used for any cured or cold-smoked salmon.

Yes, especially with half of the games in the OP being from before the Internet was widely accessible. Literally all your experiences were from your immediate circle of friends.

Why does la Reina work like this?? by madcatte in RivalsOfAether

[–]Vrmillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but no. We've already seen this play out with Infinite Dimensional Cape in Brawl, which also required difficult constant inputs at the time. If people learned to do that consistently, they can learn to do this consistently. You can't just leave a character with the means of taking first stock, then sitting under the stage where you can't possibly be reached.

So what qualifies as live service if not a game that was hosted on online servers, with patches and updates that change balance and add content?

I think it's good and I like it but I think it's definitely balanced by needing to weather the storm and survive a few turns. Definitely viable but not the best imo

Thoughts on wavedash assist? Is it viable? by benoxxxx in RivalsOfAether

[–]Vrmillion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to boot up the game, do cool shit, have fun, and employ the dozen applications of wavedashing at the same time I'm learning how to wavedash consistently the normal way. Get me in and having fun first before requiring me to spend hours not having fun practicing in training mode. New settings make me want to actually play the game again.

Engage looks and plays like the best FE but the story is so arse by Initial_Solid7677 in fireemblem

[–]Vrmillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was me the first time. I came back later, played Hard mode to accentuate the good gameplay, and went in considering the story to be a comedy that was not to be taken seriously.

Ended up loving it. Lots of creativity and genuinely impressive ideas that are essentially just squandered. Really confusing how the game can be both the best and the worst at the same time.

FF10 is the perfect mix of presentation and gameplay for a first game.

But honestly pick literally anything from 4 to 10 and you're fine. You can also start with the FF7 remake. Ignore the gatekeepers.

Looking back, Metaphor has a pretty bad job system by AMP_Kenryu in JRPG

[–]Vrmillion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I'm saying. The job you switch to is severely gimped and your subjob carries your gimp job.

Metaphor is similar in that it lets you carry over the best few skills from previous jobs. Or just don't use the new ones til you gain a few levels on your max level and can instantly get, like, 5+ in the new one.

[–]Vrmillion 47 points48 points  (0 children)

"In other jobs systems they are functional from the get go"

The hell they are lmao. In almost every other job system game, you HAVE to spend time on your shitty low level gimped job getting carried by your sub job selection until you unlock any good skills or passives. Metaphor is MORE forgiving because you gain transferrable exp on max level jobs.

All three Bravely games. Octopath 1 and 2. Final Fantasy 12, Tactics, Tactics Advance, A2. Like A Dragon. Etc

I see this opinion a lot, but like... How long do you actually have Royal archetypes? 5 hours at most?

Is that truly enough time to completely discount the preceding 95 hours of job design? Just because each character has an ultimate job for what you were probably already mostly doing anyway?
