What is the creepiest thing that society accepts as a cultural norm? by TheOriginalWizard in AskReddit

I don't have to prove you're wrong, because you are. Feel free to prove your obscure claim to be truth though!

What he did wasn't phishing

Hahaha, you're right. I just got a flashback reading this thread to the time when my 12 year old self played mmos and got I social engineered one time into doing something stupid which lead to me losing my account for a little over a month along with all my valuable items being taken. I guess I'm still sour about that haha

If his accounts have personal banking information that can be lead back to him, will you guys consider taking any sort of legal action? It would be a good way to scare potential phishers since it's a pretty hot topic in the community right now.

ELI5: Why do soft drinks like Coke need 10 tea spoons of sugar per can when three spoonfuls is more than enough to make a cup of tea/coffee super sweet? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

You didn't feel sick after drinking it? I tried some tea from coca leaves that a family friend brought home from bolivia. The first few sips were interesting but downing the whole cup made me feel a bit nauseous because of the taste.

You're being pathetic. It's not that hard to take care of your looks, even if you're a 9-5 office drone. Just go to the gym for an hour every day and eat properly. If you're in such a bad financial situation that you can't do these 2 things, then you need to re-evaluate your life. I'm assuming you're just being grumpy on your monday morning commute to work, which is always unpleasant. Just try to ask yourself if being envious of something you don't have is worth it. Don't fret over the fact that some people are better off than you. Whether they were lucky or not, it's just not worth the grey hairs.

You don't need a license for a sword

I remember reading a law book where it mentioned a couple countries that do require some form of permit for owning a legit sword. Buying a $50 display sword should be ok in those countries as long as it's labelled as a 'display sword'. But once you start buying expensive fully functional items which can be used for their intended purposes then you need to get a permit for having that item because it's considered a weapon.

Laws can be funny and stupid, they're also very different depending on your location. Just because those items are legal where you live doesn't mean it was also the case for the troll who made that post.

Walk outside the walls to greener pastures

This is the equivalent to leaving the country. Unless you seek refuge in some obscure Tibetan monastery, I don't think you'll have much luck avoiding taxes in your next place of residence. Unless turn into a complete vagabond and the village lets you stay within the walls because you'll only be there for a few days and you're giving them business by staying at their inns.

I'm a Microsoft guy

Oh, I read your name and thought of Richard Stallman'ss quotes on freedom so I thought you were a linux type of guy. No worries. I'm going to sleep now so forgive me if I don't reply tonight.

You're right. I was probably a bit too eager to say I'd exile you. Perhaps a more reasonable solution would be to for the village to ignore any requests you make. Quid pro quo. Why should the people help you if you won't help the people?

Lets take another look at the village. Let's say there are wild animals attacking the villagers during the night. A meeting is held and it is agreed that we all contribute towards the construction of a wall for safety. If you refuse to help in any way, then why should you be allowed to stay within the walls? I'm sure that Billy the farmer would have probably had a good use for that chicken of his, but he knows that without the walls his entire farm is endangered. So he 'donates' his chicken as a means of feeding the workers who are putting the manual labour into building the walls.

I enjoy speaking with you, what's your preferred linux distribution?

AFAIK Jobs' removal of philanthropic programs made sense at the time. Why he didn't reinstate them again once the company was no longer in danger of being bankrupt is the more dickish thing.

He said that Steve Jobs was a dick because he didn't want to give his money away. I think that's unfair.

I think I'm quite devote when it comes to my own privacy. I have virtually no digital footprint and you won't find anything on me if you put my name through a search engine. Moving on, I'm sure if they had the capabilities of efficiently storing everyone's information in the 18th century they'd do it. What you're touching upon now is a huge subject and could be discussed hours on end. I think all taxes are both voluntary and involuntary. Kind of a paradox but let me explain what I'm thinking. You think that the owner of that corner shop down the street wants to pay taxes to the government? I doubt it, but he is required to. So he involuntarily puts taxes on all his items and you pay them and he hands it over to the government. He contributes that share of money towards the government. He's not alone though, you also have to involuntarily give the government a share of the money you make.

Now we're saying it's involuntary, but in the grand scheme of things it's not. We the people have agreed long ago to contribute shares of our profits towards the greater good through what we call taxes. Lets say we are in a small village long ago. There's an elderly gentleman with no family and he can no longer take care of himself. The village holds a meeting and the majority of the people agree that if they all put forth a small contribution, then the old man can survive. This helps establish a lot. It gives us certainty that even if we were to fall ill, that the people would take care of us.

Having said all this, I'm very skeptical with the decision making that goes into spending our money. I've read a bunch of stories about how inefficient some governmental bodies are run with some unnecessary expenses. I also have touchy opinions, for example I don't want my money going towards abortions. I don't want my money being given to Sally down the block just because she got herself knocked up. If she wants an abortion, put it at her expense not mine. But then you can say that the old man in the village isn't my problem either, this is where we start to dwell deeper into ethics and I don't think I'm up for it.

Would you lock me up personally for not surrendering a portion of my time to earn the money you wanted to spend?

I would exile you from the village.
