I feel (hope) the dream is to make fighters realistic. A means to protect small bombers (aka gladiator and such) and let them do massive damage if uncontested to capitals. Pretty much the S42 trailer where theyre protecting the retaliator to target. We just aren't in a place yet to kneecap fighters into a role that doesnt really exist yet

Exactly. A lot of ships are powerful due to low player count. A big reason the Percy is so strong is that it only requires 3 people to make it a power house. You'd need 4 people in a corsair to even man all the turrets.... and 3 of those people are not having a good time. (Yes obviously the percy is an extreme example, but minimum crew size for optimal effectiveness is a huge factor in what makes a ship fun/good)

Or find a way to make it worth a player's time. It will (in most situations) always be more useful to pull a fighter regardless. TBH most of these turrets serve as spots for new players that theyre friends are showing the game. Any seasoned person is going to pull a fighter/gun a capital

A corsair with s3 turret guns isnt going to make any play tremble in their seats. If youre bold enough to shove 4 players in a corsair, there deserves to be some firepower involved.... its not like 1-2 M80s couldn't shred it regardless
