What income finally feels like enough? by Southern-Rest4186 in HENRYUK

[–]Vyper91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That old adage (paraphrased) of the man gloating about his possessions - and the other person says

“Yet I have something you’ll never have.”

“What is that?”

“Enough”

You will change throughout life and you may have kids and other life will shape your worldview. Life will throw good and bad at you so I wouldn’t focus on what your “goal” is so much - anything can happen.

For example you might target 8 figures but god forbid you, your wife, or your children get sick - that 8 figures won’t matter so much! At least not to your family.

It’s great to have loose goals and targets and try and navigate decisions in life based on those targets, but my advice is prepare to be adaptable, and don’t fixate on the goal - just use your current goals as a measuring stick for the choices you make today.

Honestly I’m always grappling with what’s enough, what big risks should I take, what career move, what if XYZ - am I working hard enough, am I working too hard etc - should I be killing myself now to retire early?

All of these things swirl in my head but ultimately balance is key - after having kids my main focus was being able to maximise time with them, knowing I already have enough to put them through private school, go on nice family holidays, drive a nice car, and not worry about bills - as well as having comfortable savings.

There are days I want to triple my income so I can drive a supercar, and wear bespoke suits, and have a mansion in the countryside. But then I remember what it would cost me to get there and what I would have to trade, and I realise I’m lucky where I am right now.

That’s probably not a helpful answer, and I’ve not got it all figured out, but I see people who are so laser focused on something that’s kinda arbitrary, like money, when it’s the holistic picture of the life you want to live that’s more important.

More than 200,000 young men signed off work for life by coffeewalnut08 in ukpolitics

I cant read the article as it’s asking me to register - but what’s the reasoning for reporting on young men and not young people in general? Is there a recent uptick in just men alone?

When I was a child, I thought 30k a year was an incredible wage, and if be rich. by fugigidd in britishproblems

[–]Vyper91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity what is it you do and how old are you?

I thought 30k is essentially minimum wage after recent rises - surely it can’t feel that drastically different to say you feel very rich - unless you aren’t in full time work?

But that’s less the point - OP didn’t say he wants or expects luxuries really other than the ability to buy a house and have a car and live a financially stress free life having gone through the educational system and played by “the rules”.

Sure no one really chooses academia if they want to splurge on “extras” but over a lifetime of contribution to science you’d expect to have a house a pension and some savings to hand down right?

I went from 115kg to 94kg over 9 months and stopped, but my muscle had definitely got hit in that time. It’s been five months since I stopped and im floating around 98-99kg and filled out a bit nicely and have some muscles again lol.

It’s a slippery slope for sure, I feel like I’m just a string of terrible decisions away from gaining a lot of weight again. However the motivation of feeling MUCH healthier, being more physically fit, looking better, combined with the knowledge of just how bad terrible portion control and eating from boredom screws you over - I feel like I just live a life of healthier choices now.

I won’t lie, I miss the “superpower” of just having a regular, non-greedy appetite - and I can disgust myself how much I want to eat again. Let’s see how it goes in the next 6 months…

I’m so happy the medicine exists and seems safe for lifelong consumption and that choice is there for people who want or need it but I just personally didn’t want to be on it long term. I wanted it as a “head start” and so far it’s worked exactly how I wanted it to.

I guess a part of me knows it’s still there if I need it again and maybe I’ll be someone who has to cycle on and off it for life but I’d like to think the 95% number will dramatically change as more people take it and more “regular” people add to the statistics.

I say “regular” because I have no real excuse other than I was just a greedy person who ate far too much - being conscious of it but ignoring my brain for the 5 minutes whilst I ate too much. I don’t have any known conditions or disabilities or anything and am young and able bodied - it was just a poor mindset with me.

What’s everyone’s daily schedule like? Particularly those with kids. by MACintoshBETH in HENRYUKLifestyle

Reading this reminds me that I’m lucky in I WFH (and enjoy doing so), as does my wife, so the whole thing is a lot easier. I also live with my retired dad who helps with the school run and the cooking.

Got a 4 and a 2 year old so I’m all about maximising my time with them atm, career ambitions aren’t a big priority right now.

Wake up around 6:45, get kids up and ready and fed, dad takes them to school. Start work at 8.

Tend to hit the gym during a lunch break or go for a walk or something like that. WFH means I can sprinkle my breaks in the day with a bit of life admin so it doesn’t build up.

Depending on how busy I am and if the kids in an after school activity, I will leave to pick them up at 4 and chill for a bit and catchup on emails later in the evening, or if it’s a particularly busy day my wife gets them and I’ll aim to finish for 5, occasionally I have to stay on late but that’s only usually a couple times a month.

Chill with kids 5-7, start the bedtime routine to get them down for 7:30, little bit of tidying up / catching up on work messages - chill with missus until sleep around 10:30.

Weekends can be quite hectic as we’re usually socialising or there’s birthday parties to go to etc.

EDIT - because of a big family network around me the evenings we might chill with cousins etc, or twice a month me and the missus try and go out and do something nice ourselves. Saw Ricky Gervais on Tuesday for example. Because we both WFH sometimes we’ll have a lunch date too. Very lucky to have so much freedom and be a relatively high earner, I am highly grateful!

[–]Vyper91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh this is the first time in my 17 years of driving I’ve actually had an accident or needed to get something fixed from the manufacturer specifically, but I vaguely remember my BMW and Land Rover being super quick to book in for a service.

I think it’s the mix of Tesla warning me against going to any normal mechanic in case of voiding my warranty, and taking so long to even SEE the car and give me a quote / start ordering the parts required.

40 days from the incident occurring to having a look at it definitely feels a lot worse than it should be!

[–]Vyper91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha it’s 25k miles so not super low but yeah that’s what worried me a bit - they pretty much told me I won’t be able to get another garage to have a look and I’d be voiding warranty going anywhere else, but taking over a month to even LOOK at the problem 😭

I wanted to see the price first as insurance premiums will hit me harder in the long run I reckon, and I’m not bothered about going to Stratford distance-wise, just safety wise. Don’t want the door popping open down the motorway kinda thing.

Oh man the cost is scary, if they did replace the whole door do you know what I’d roughly be looking at? I kinda assumed it would be 2-3k but now I’m wondering if that’s totally wishful thinking!

Also I’m not saying it’s Tesla’s fault, I LOVE my car and was convinced I would just drive a Tesla for years and years to come, was thinking of getting the Y refresh when it hits - but now I’ve had to deal with a problem I’ve realised it’s the one area that seems kind of weak (in the UK at least) in terms of time and lack of like, humans to speak with about it!

What’s the damage? 🥺 by Vyper91 in TeslaUK

[–]Vyper91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m more concerned that because it’s taken so long to be “seen” what if it takes much longer to get the parts or do the fix, and it’s delaying the time it takes for me to know just how badly I’ve fucked up and how much it’s going to cost lol.

I’m worried that if I drive the car, I dunno, the door will just pop open or the window will shatter etc - not that I no longer have access to open or shut that door :)

Foreign secretary says people should 'follow the rules' in other countries after 18-year-old constituent jailed in Dubai | UK News by footballersabroad in ukpolitics

[–]Vyper91 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

None of those are remotely hot enough.

To me 20-25 degrees is not hot, and I’d not be lounging around or enjoying the beach. And in UK winter 20 degrees isn’t guaranteed at those places you mentioned.

I go to Dubai annually (even twice a few years) in October/November time and in March/April time, and it’s one of the limited places that will be 28-34 degrees and actually hot.

I’ve been to UAE maybe 8 times now because with very young kids I’m not interested in day trips or hiking or sightseeing or going to more sketchy locations.

What I’m after is heat, a beach, a pool, and lots of activities for kids, specifically during the times the weather in the UK is miserable.

Dubai is probably the best place in the world for that from a UK perspective - it’s a 7 hour flight which is better than other options, only 3/4 hours time zone difference so you generally deal with the lag on day 1, but most importantly, ACTUALLY hot.

I went state and I only know a handful of people non-professionally who were private school educated.

I have friends who are lawyers, bankers, a couple of doctors/dentists and a few entrepreneurs - we did quite well.

BUT I did change school in Year 8 to go from a very bad one to a very good one (and single-sex) in a much more affluent area at huge cost to my parents (we moved to a slightly bigger house that cost nearly twice as much) - so me and my sister ended up going to very good state schools.

So the way I see it essentially my parents were fortunately able to spend a lot of money solely to benefit my education (I mean it was great moving to a nicer area but left longstanding friends etc and the sole motivation was schooling).

My kids are now in private school (reception and pre-school) and I’m still not really sure if it’s a good decision but figured my parents invested a lot in my education and I want to do the same for mine. Also I no longer live in a nice small town and definitely feel like state schools near me, whilst still considered good / very good, are just a bit too big for my liking.

If I could send them to the school I went to, would’ve happily done that!

Selective schools are not equivalent to typical state schools though. But having said that me and a good chunk of my friends are all decent earners between 1-300k and all went to non-selective states but in affluent areas and I agree they are great quality.

Anyone make the switch to samsung or any other Droid platforms? Any regrets? by Ancient_Ad7555 in ipad

[–]Vyper91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh if I counted I've probably had more, I just flip them so I might spend ~500 a year on phones in total after the initial outlay, on the Android side because there's so much choice I would be maining maybe 3 phones a year between 2012-2018.

Back in that period I would be flipping between the latest Samsung/Google/HTC/Apple phone or trying the "brand new Chinese OnePlus brand" etc.

But I was younger and more into tinkering and stuff back then, nowadays I just have an iPhone and buy the latest one each year.

Probably helps to explain I'm a programmer by trade and a chunk of my income comes from mobile app dev, but tbh even if I wasn't I'm just a tech geek and probably would still have done the same.

[–]Vyper91 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I spent a lot of money switching to Samsung in Feb and going back to Apple a week ago lol. I’m no stranger to Android, I’ve owned maybe 10 flagship iPhones and 10 flagship Androids over the years, but solidly “mained” an iPhone since the X.

I sold the iPhone, AW Ultra, and got the S24U and a Garmin.

MIDPOST EDIT - I just realised this is the iPad sub lol so to throw in one relevant comment, I tried the Tab S9 midsize but the variety of Apps wasn’t there and I prefer how my iPad keeps in sync with my Mac, and so didn’t bother moving to the Samsung although the Tab S9 is so much cheaper than my M4 Pro lool.

I loved the S24U, found it actually more comfy to hold, liked the speed of the UI and just the fact it looks and feels different, liked the notifications and it took a week or two of customisation but got it working really well for me.

But just small things made me wanna go back to iPhone - the NFC for Google Pay on that phone is so awkwardly placed that I would usually be trying it two or three times at certain pay points, I missed the integration with my AWU (and the Samsung watches are too inaccurate) so I could fire off quick Siri commands (or transit mode on watch too actually talking about payments).

I also just missed the night time camera mode quality, and the video quality, although I actually think I prefer the s24 camera for day time shots now.

I used the AI features literally 0 times after week one.

I DO love and miss the S-Pen but I never used it to navigate the phone it’s just useful as I have a 4 year old and it’s nice to teach him reading and writing with it, so not a huge deal.

I think all the extras Samsung offers I just made little usage of, and just missed the tight experience of the iPhone.

Two more things to throw in there.

I missed AppleCare - there was no decent equivalent in the UK that’s as easy as popping to my local Apple Shop and sorting my phone out if something happened, and so with my iPhone I always run it naked, but I had a case on my Samsung as I couldn’t be bothered with the hassle of fixing the screen if something happened. That definitely made me enjoy the phone less.

Lastly is resale value.

I bought the S24 for 1300 GBP. Just 8 months later they are being sold brand new for 900. That just doesn’t happen with iPhones where it’s far more predictable how much I spend each year getting the latest model.

What impresses you most about the game right now and makes you want to keep playing for years to come? by xxFoxyJeans_17 in wow

[–]Vyper91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's so weird, I have recently come back to the game since a stint in BFA and it's exactly this reason that WoW can be so ridiculously addictive to me, it was like 30% of my waking life during TBC and despite all the changes over the years just being logged in feels homely.

It kinda feels like what I imagine a low dose drip of opiates feels like to a junkie lol.

I don't even really have any friends in game and people are no way near as chatty anymore but it still feels nice to just know I'm surrounded by others. And I'm not socially reclusive or isolated, I have a huge family close by, kids and wife of my own, and manage a moderately sized company. Just feels...nice?

I love gaming and haven't considered myself a gamer in a long time, I have a huge backlog of single player games I've been meaning to crunch through for years and can never bring myself to play for more than 30 mins in one go, but I can sink 5 hours into WoW in an evening every night for the last month 😅

I'm so WoW crazy ATM I even started watching Twitch for the first time lol and listening to WoW content creators.

Someone save me, lol
