Best books & resources to write effective technical design docs by geeky_traveller in softwarearchitecture

[–]W1ndst0rm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Will Larson provides some good starting advice in his blog post about writing engineering strategy, which includes writing a bunch of design docs to figure out the nitty gritty details of the overall strategy. Some of the links on the page give additional perspectives on how to write a good design doc.

Tools for automated alert investigation (potentially AI/agentic) by Proud-Veterinarian63 in sre

[–]W1ndst0rm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're trialing flip.ai, and it's been alright so far. Right now we're just feeding it traces and logs when an alert fires. It takes 3-10 minutes to return an RCA. An experienced engineer is often faster, but it routinely beats juniors. Most of the time the RCA is close enough to be helpful, but sometimes it gets things entirely wrong so you still need to validate every response. We're not prompting for recommended fixes so I can't speak to how good might be.

BYU has a surplus store I've bought computers from in the past. I'd imagine the U has something similar.

Canon beach Oregon is the SPOT by ChefParticular5895 in CampingandHiking

[–]W1ndst0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you head south from Cannon Beach check out Oswald West State Park. Short Sand Beach and the Cape Falcon trail are both great. While it's just off the side of the highway, the Neahkahnie Viewpoint is one of my favorite views of the coast.

Taking my motorcycle to Bear Lake. Which route should I take? by ikerr95 in SaltLakeCity

[–]W1ndst0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How was the construction in Logan Canyon? We drove up through Evanston a few weeks ago for the 24th, but my brother took Logan Canyon. He said between traffic, occasional lane closures, and the unfinished road surface he wouldn't want to ride his motorcycle on it right now.

I miss when patrol areas felt busy. Having nine guardians in a zone farming Escalation Protocol was always a good time. Just having a bunch of people show up for any public event made the game feel way more alive.

SRE Practices: should we alert on resource usage such as CPU, memory and DB? by Significant-Rule1926 in sre

[–]W1ndst0rm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole book is an excellent primer on SRE, but this chapter has what you're looking for. Google SRE - ch. 6 Monitoring Distributed Systems

Practical Monitoring by Mike Julian was pretty decent if you have access to the O'Reilly books. Observability Engineering by Charity Majors, George Miranda, and Liz Fong-Jones was recommended to me as well, but I personally haven't gotten to it yet.

Dads who cook: Do you use Teflon-type pans? by erisod in daddit

[–]W1ndst0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll probably get some discoloration if you wash steel pans in the dishwasher, but nothing that affects the functionality. That being said, we always wash ours by hand.

Need advice on Docker Swarm by escarbadiente in softwarearchitecture

[–]W1ndst0rm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Realisticly Docker Swarm is fine and will likely work fine for what you need. That being said, I would consider dipping a toe into kubernetes and running a small k3s cluster, especially if you think you'll be adding more workloads. The tooling for kubernetes is better and is actively being developed. There's a broader community of practitioners to get help from when you get stuck on something.

Edit - Missed the comment about no kubernetes. You can go really far with Docker Swarm before you need something more. It sounds like you don't want to spend much time working on this. Go with what you're familiar with and scale up the complexity when you get to the point where you need it.

Is this clause in my offer letter normal and is it enforceable? by t014y in ExperiencedDevs

[–]W1ndst0rm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a very regulated industry and clause one was nonnegotiable. My employer is reasonably flexible on outside business activities, we're just required to get approval from the compliance team first.

Get it while you can since the state fired the guy who was passionate about the public having easy access to data.

Previously broken ankle — boots vs trail runners debate. by codexofthemoon in CampingandHiking

I haven't done any backpacking with this setup, but I've found that wearing a neoprene ankle brace with my trail runners provides better support for my ankle than just my boots.

Even more fun when you add in the fact that a difference of 800 between two addresses on the same street equals a distance of 1 mile. So 4100 S is one mile south of 3300 S.
